[UPDATED] Eight UMT students charged with assaulting fellow student causing serious injury
The accused, all male and aged between 21 and 23, made the plea after the charge was read by the court interpreter before Magistrate Iffah Nabihah Mohd Ishak.
According to the charge, all eight students were alleged to have intentionally caused grievous hurt to the 21-year-old victim.
They were charged with committing the offence at a college in UMT's Kuala Nerus branch between 1.30am and 5am on December 15 last year.
The charge was framed under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.
The court set July 6 for mention and granted bail of RM5,000 to all the accused.
Deputy public prosecutors Azizan Abdullah, Nur Nabihah Hanin Ayim, and Nur Aisyah Mohamad prosecuted the case.
All the accused were represented by lawyers from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
It was previously reported that police arrested 12 students from a public higher education institute in the state who were believed to be involved in a group assault at a residential college.

'They work for a company, which name I can't reveal, and we're looking into why it was set up,' Azam said, adding that they believed that both the suspects acted as enablers by leaking information to the syndicate. The MACC had arrested five senior armed forces officers on Wednesday for allegedly leaking military operation information to smugglers and colluding with a syndicate to smuggle in contraband, including drugs and cigarettes, estimated to be worth RM5 million a month. Meanwhile, Azam said during his speech at the close of KOMAWAR that it was organised not only to provide exposure and education on corruption and integrity but to instill values and build character among university students. The biennial KOMAWAR's objective is to shape a generation of graduates to reject corruption and allow youth to support integrity and transparency in the country's administration, he added. — BERNAMA

Police and MCMC track TikTok user over fake Zara Qairina post-mortem claims
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) are tracking a TikTok user who falsely claimed to be a surgeon involved in the post-mortem of Zara Qairina Mahathir. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that the individual falsely asserted his presence during the procedure on Aug 10. The Health Ministry confirmed the person was neither a specialist nor a staff member. Fahmi said the TikTok user spread misinformation during a live session, misleading the public. The false claims went viral, causing widespread confusion. He addressed the issue after launching the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign at the Teacher Education Institute (Malay Language Campus). Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad verified the false claims through an official report. Deputy director-general (Medical) Datuk Dr Nor Azimi Yunus confirmed the forensic team had no such specialist involved. The TikTok user has since set his account to private, complicating investigations. Fahmi warned the public against believing unverified social media content. Spreading false information is punishable by fines of up to RM500,000. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17. JB cops probing trespass incident at private school caught on CCTV
JOHOR BARU: Police are investigating a trespassing incident involving a private secondary school in Kampung Stulang Laut here. Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said a report was lodged about the incident at about 3.30am on Friday (Aug 16). 'Two men were seen climbing over the school's front gate before entering the basketball court. 'They were later found to have thrown traffic cones around before escaping by scaling the fence,' he said in a statement. He said CCTV footage also showed a group of people passing by the school's front gate before the two suspects trespassed into the compound. 'The school has verified that the suspects and their companions are not its students. 'No damage or loss of property was reported,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 447 of the Penal Code for trespassing. ACP Raub said police are tracking down the suspects and urged anyone with information to contact the nearest police station or the Johor Baru South hotline at 07-221 8999.
