JD Vance to meet with top Trump officials to plot Epstein strategy
The gathering, first reported by CNN, is reportedly set to include the attorney general, Pam Bondi; the deputy attorney general, Todd Blanche; the FBI director, Kash Patel; and the White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles.
Sources familiar with the gathering told CNN and ABC News that the officials will be discussing whether to release the transcript of the justice department's recent interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's associate and a convicted sex trafficker.
Two weeks ago the justice department sent Blanche, who is also one of Donald Trump's former personal lawyers, to interview Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison for sex trafficking and other crimes.
That meeting lasted two days and details from it have not been made public.
According to ABC News, the administration is considering publicly releasing the transcripts from the interview as soon as this week.
Last week Maxwell was quietly transferred from a Florida prison to a lower-security facility in Texas. Trump claimed to reporters that he 'didn't know' about the transfer.
The Trump administration has faced mounting pressure and a bipartisan backlash after the justice department announced it would not be releasing additional documents related to Epstein, despite earlier promises by Trump and Bondi that they would do so.
Epstein, who died in prison in New York in 2019 while awaiting federal trial, is the subject of countless conspiracy theories, in part due to his ties to high-profile and powerful individuals.
On Tuesday, the House oversight committee subpoenaed the justice department for files related to the Epstein sex-trafficking investigation and issued subpoenas for depositions from several prominent figures.
They included the former president Bill Clinton; the former secretary of state Hillary Clinton; multiple former attorneys general, including Jeff Sessions, Alberto Gonzales, William Barr and Merrick Garland; and the former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller.
Axios pointed out that Trump's former labor secretary Alex Acosta was absent from the list despite his involvement in the 2008 plea deal with Epstein when Acosta was a top federal prosecutor in Florida. Axios noted that Acosta's boss during his time in Florida, Gonzales, is on the subpoena list.
Maxwell, who was found guilty of sex trafficking and other charges in December 2021, is appealing her conviction to the supreme court, citing Epstein's plea agreement. This week her attorneys also opposed the government's request to unseal grand jury transcripts related to the Epstein case.
'Jeffrey Epstein is dead,' her lawyers wrote. 'Ghislaine Maxwell is not. Whatever interest the public may have in Epstein, that interest cannot justify a broad intrusion into grand jury secrecy in a case where the defendant is alive, her legal options are viable and her due process rights remain.'
Maxwell also said last week that she was willing to testify before Congress if she was granted immunity.
The Democratic congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who has introduced a resolution in Congress that opposes Maxwell receiving a presidential pardon or any other form of clemency, told CNN on Wednesday that he believes the 'vast majority of Americans oppose any form of clemency for Maxwell, and we need to say that with one voice in Congress as well'.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment relating to the Vance meeting.

US Air Force to deny retirement pay to transgender service members being separated from the service
The U.S. Air Force said Thursday it would deny all transgender service members who have served between 15 and 18 years the option to retire early and would instead separate them without retirement benefits. The move means that transgender service members will now be faced with the choice of either taking a lump-sum separation payment offered to junior troops or be removed from the service. An Air Force spokesperson told The Associated Press that 'although service members with 15 to 18 years of honorable service were permitted to apply for an exception to policy, none of the exceptions to policy were approved.' About a dozen service members had been 'prematurely notified' that they would be able to retire before that decision was reversed, according to the spokesperson who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal Air Force policy. All transgender members of the Air Force are being separated from the service under the Trump administration's policies.

2 Pennsylvania state troopers have been shot, governor says
Two state troopers were shot Thursday in a rural area of Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro said at an event outside Philadelphia. Shapiro said that in the late morning in Susquehanna County, 'two state troopers were shot. Lori and I are praying for those troopers. I want you to know I've communicated with Col. Paris. He is on the scene." Christopher Paris heads the Pennsylvania State Police. An aide said Shapiro headed to the shooting location in the northeastern Pennsylvania county, which borders New York state. A state police spokesperson, Trooper Logan T. Brouse, said the location was along Route 171 near the village of Thompson. That's about 163 miles (262 kilometers) north of Philadelphia. Angelica Howell, a deputy coroner in Susquehanna County, said shortly after 3 p.m. that she was on her way to where the shooting occurred. Howell said authorities did not indicate whether there was more than one person dead when they asked the coroner's office to respond. Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick said in a social media post that he was monitoring the developing situation. He also expressed empathy for the troopers who were shot. 'Dina and I are praying for our brave state troopers in Susquehanna County and monitoring the situation closely as more details emerge,' McCormick posted. U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan said on X that he was 'relieved to hear the troopers involved in today's incident in Thompson Township are expected to be in stable condition.'

A source said: 'He is expected to be in Scotland next week.' The Vice President's visit was expected with it reported earlier this year he would travel to Scotland shortly after President Trump had left Scottish soil. It is not known whether Mr Vance will meet with the First Minister or other members of the Scottish Government and his exact movements are yet to be confirmed. But John Swinney has highlighted the importance of engaging with senior members of the US Government and has already rolled out the red carpet for Mr Trump and for his son, Eric Trump, in March. It is believed the Vice President will be in Scotland between Wednesday, August 13 and Sunday, August 17. The visit from the latest high-profile American politician comes shortly after Mr Trump's five-day trip to Turnberry and Aberdeenshire, where he opened the new 18 holes at his golf course at Trump International in Menie. Mr Trump met with the First Minister, the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and played several rounds of golf during his visit. The President also slammed Nicola Sturgeon as a 'horrible' First Minister, having praised Mr Swinney as 'special'. He also hit out at wind farms, labelling them 'ugly monsters', before flying home on Air Force One. Awkward moment Trump is drowned out by BAGPIPES as he welcomes Starmer The visit required a major mobilisation of more than 5,000 police officers from across the country and included a false alarm bomb scare outside his golf club in Menie. Mr Trump is set to visit the UK again on an unprecedented second state visit in September, where he will be the guest of the King. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Any question around the movements of the US President or Vice President would be for the White House to comment on. "Police Scotland has an international reputation for delivering significant policing operations and should we be asked to support any large event in the future we will approach that with the same professional and effective approach to planning and delivery.' A Scottish Government spokesperson said movements of the Vice President were for the White House but added: "There are no confirmed plans for the First Minister to meet the Vice President." The White House has been contacted for comment.
