Horticulture to be expanded to 2,500 acres in Vizianagaram dist
Vizianagaram: District Collector Dr B R Ambedkar has announced that large-scale fruit and flower plantations will be undertaken in Vizianagaram district under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
He urged eligible farmers to make the best use of this opportunity. He said that during the financial year 2024–25, plantations were undertaken in 855 acres in the district. For 2025–26, the target has been set to expand horticulture crop plantations to approximately 2,500 acres.
The scheme is open to SC, ST, small and marginal farmers (those owning less than five acres of land). As part of the initiative for the current financial year, fruit plantations will be encouraged in both rainfed and irrigated lands. The State government is planning to promote 23 types of fruit plantations, 2 types of flower plantations and moringa cultivation across the district.
Mango, cashew, custard apple, sweet lime, lemon, guava, Taiwan Guava, Sapota and coconut are some of the fruit varieties to be promoted under the scheme. The government will bear 100% of the maintenance expenses for a period of two to three years, depending on the crop type.
Interested SC, ST, and small/marginal farmers with valid job cards under MGNREGS can submit their applications to the respective mandal programme officer, mandal parishad development officer (MPDO), or the Additional Programme officer for MGNREGS. ' Collector said.

NEW DELHI: Keeping home buyers in the lurch by delaying construction of a housing project for more than a decade and then defying the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission's order to refund the money cost dearly a Bengaluru-based real estate company as the commission issued an arrest warrant and directed the city police commissioner to arrest its managing director and bring her before it. Left with no option, a bench of Justice Inderjit Singh and Sadhna Shanker directed her arrest. The court passed the order on a plea of homebuyers who approached the commission through advocate Chandrachur Bhattacharya seeking execution of commission's 2022 order to refund the money which was upheld by the SC also. The commission had in 2022 directed Dreamz Infra India Ltd to complete construction and offer possession to the homebuyers along with delay interest of 9 % per annum or refund the money. Thousands of buyers who had booked flats in the housing projects in Bengaluru in 2012 were cheated by the company as they were promised possession in 2014 but were left waiting for their flats even after 11 years of the deadline. NCDRC had in April issued bailable arrest warrants against Choudhary with directions to release her on personal bail bond of Rs 10 lakhs with one surety of the like amount but the city police informed the commission that it could not locate her to execute the warrants.

Bike taxis are not luxury but necessity to ease traffic congestion, operators tell Karnataka high court
Bengaluru: The Bike Taxi Welfare Association argued on Wednesday that bike taxis are not a luxury, but a necessity in easing traffic congestion. The state govt's decision to ban the services affected 6.5 lakh bike taxis and 6 lakh dependent families. Senior advocate Shashank Garg, appearing on behalf of the association, submitted that the drivers had taken loans and there are no alternative employment opportunities. They put hard-earned money into buying vehicles. He suggested some interim arrangement could be made to enable the vehicles to ply by imposing conditions for the safety of drivers and passengers. Dwelling upon the ban, Garg submitted that there is a complete policy vacuum and pointed out that the E-bike rules of 2021 completely debunk the expert committee report of 2019, relied on by the state govt to ban bike taxis, as the E-taxi policy clearly spells out last-mile connectivity. He added the expert committee only considered and confined itself to Bengaluru city before making their recommendation for imposing a ban. He further claimed the ban was imposed more to benefit the autorickshaw drivers and termed it a political issue. It is always open to the state govt to take measures, i.e., framing guidelines in relation to bike taxi services, the order further stated, while granting six weeks' time to cease operations. The said period was further extended until June 15 by another order.
