Your Next Instant Pot Might Be Made by Donald Trump

Gizmodo6 hours ago

America has become a parody of itself.
Donald Trump sells everything from Trump-branded Bibles to MAGA sneakers, as the billionaire hustler profits from the presidency in a way that no other U.S. leader has ever attempted. And it looks like we can add a few more products to the list today, including a MAGA Instant Pot, if you can believe it.
The new Instant Pot is being dubbed the 45/47 Collaboration, according to a new report from Semafor, a reference to Trump being both the 45th and 47th president of the United States. It's not clear yet what the MAGA Instant Pot will look like exactly, but it's likely to include the tagline 'Make America Great Again,' and will be publicly available starting July 4.
What does Trump get out of it? According to Semafor, this 'collaboration with representatives of the Trump administration' will see 'a portion of the profits' go to the Trump Presidential Library. That's highly unusual, to say the least, since presidential library foundations are non-profit entities that typically fundraise after a president has already left office.
You can think of each presidential library as essentially being two parts: One part of the library holds the president's documents from his time in office and is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The other part is the private, non-profit entity that fundraises to build and run the museum and physical space where visitors can come and walk through a kind of shrine to the president's life.
The Semafor report doesn't make a distinction between which half of the Trump Library is getting the donation of the Instant Pot proceeds, but it feels like a safe bet to say it's the private part controlled by Trump's people. Instant Pot brands didn't respond to questions emailed Monday morning. The Trump Organization also didn't respond.
Instant Pot merged with Corelle Brands in 2019, which is owned by private equity firm Cornell Capital. But Instant Pot filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and became a new company called Instant Brands. The company was sued in 2024 after lenders accused the private equity firm of loading up Instant Pot with $450 million of debt before declaring bankruptcy, a story that's extremely common in the world of private equity. The firm allegedly took out a loan for $450 million in 2021 and paid $345 million of that as a dividend to Cornell Capital, according to Fortune.
The Instant Pot isn't the only new collaboration Trump is trying on with a home goods company. Lenox Corporation is also planning to make 'fine porcelain dinnerware' that features images like the White House logo. Gold-plated utensils along with MAGA glasses are also in the works, according to the news outlet. Bedding companies like Live Comfortably and Simply Interior Homes have also been looking at producing MAGA products.
A representative for the brands working on Trump products told Semafor: 'All of these companies […] are extremely supportive of President Trump and the MAGA Agenda, standing with the president with their efforts to onshore and show public support.'
To top it all off, Trump Media also announced a new Trump-brand mobile phone on Monday. The news release is patently ridiculous, and it's not clear yet when it'll come out. But the fact that they're trying to do it at all is pretty mind-boggling.
Trump has turned the presidency into a profit-making machine, according to financial disclosure forms filed last week. The president made $57.3 million from World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency platform launched last year with his help. He made $3 million from a 'Save America' coffee table book, $2.5 million from his sneakers and fragrances, $2.8 million from his watches, $1.3 million from his bible, $1.1 million from his NFT licensing, and $1 million from his guitar.
And none of that includes Trump's cryptocurrency $TRUMP, which wasn't released until shortly before he took office in January, meaning that it wasn't required on the president's latest financial disclosure forms. CBS News reports that Trump's cryptocurrency ventures have contributed billions to his family's net worth.
All of this is supposed to be illegal, according to the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution. Presidents aren't supposed to be making money from their office. Several lawsuits were brought during Trump's first term, but none of them went anywhere. And that seems to have given Trump a green light to accelerate his businesses while in office for his second go-around. Laws are fake until they're enforced. And Trump knows that as the most powerful person in the world, nobody can actually enforce laws meant to keep the powerful in check.

"Turning up the propaganda hose to full blast": Carlson attacks Fox News in Bannon interview

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson blasted his former employer on Monday, criticizing their decision to offer a show to broadcaster Mark Levin. Speaking to former Trump advisor Steve Bannon on his "Bannon's War Room" podcast, Carlson said that Levin was "screechy" and "not a calming presence." He suggested that Levin received his position due to pressure from Fox News host Sean Hannity. "Levin's the funniest because he's terrible on TV, and again, I never had any problems with him at Fox. He kind of controls Hannity in this weird way. I never understood what that was about. I never really cared to learn,' Carlson said. "Sean pushed, and they gave him some kind of weekend show that nobody watched.' Carlson said that Levin's show was like "listening to your ex-wife scream about alimony payments" and suggested that he's seeing increased airtime because Fox News is trying to lay the groundwork for American intervention in the Israel-Iran conflict. "What they're doing is what they always do, which is just turning up the propaganda hose to full blast and just trying to, you know, knock elderly Fox viewers off their feet and make them submit to where you want them to," he said. On Friday, Carlson accused Levin, Hannity, and Rupert Murdoch of being 'warmongers' for pushing President Donald Trump to involve the U.S. in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. On Monday, Carlson cautioned the Trump administration against choosing a side. "I'm really afraid that my country's gonna be further weakened by this. I think we're gonna see the end of the American empire,' he said. Trump responded to Carlson while speaking to reporters on Monday, calling the former agenda-setter irrelevant. "I don't know what Tucker Carlson is saying," he said. "Let him go get a television network and say it so that people listen."

US news consumers are turning to podcaster Joe Rogan and away from traditional sources, report shows

By Helen Coster (Reuters) -Prominent podcasters like Joe Rogan are playing a bigger role in news dissemination in the United States, as are AI chatbots, contributing to the further erosion of traditional media, according to a report released on Tuesday. In the week following the January 2025 U.S. presidential inauguration, more Americans said they got their news from social and video networks than from TV and news websites and apps - the first time that shift has occurred, the report said. Traditional U.S. news media increasingly risks being eclipsed by online personalities and creators, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism said in its annual Digital News Report, which is based on an online survey of almost 100,000 people in 48 markets, including the United States. The trend is particularly acute among young Americans. Over half of people under age 35 in the U.S. are relying on social media and video networks as their main source for news, the report found. Across the countries that the report surveyed, 44% of people aged 18 to 24 said these networks are their main source of news. One-fifth of a sampled group of Americans came across news or commentary from podcaster Rogan in the week following the presidential inauguration, the report found, while 14% of respondents said they had come across former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson discussing or commenting on news during that period. Carlson now generates content across multiple social media and video networks. Top creators during that period also included Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens and Ben Shapiro on the political right, and Brian Tyler Cohen and David Pakman on the left. The vast majority of the most followed commentators who discuss politics are men, the report found. 'These are not just big numbers in themselves,' wrote Nic Newman, Senior Research Associate at the Oxford, UK-based Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. 'These creators are also attracting audiences that traditional media struggle to reach. Some of the most popular personalities over-index with young men, with right-leaning audiences, and with those that have low levels of trust in mainstream media outlets, seeing them as biased or part of a liberal elite.' Despite their popularity, online influencers and personalities are seen as the biggest sources of false or misleading information worldwide, along with politicians, the report found. In the United States, politicians are considered the biggest sources of false or misleading information. Over 70% of Americans say they remain concerned about their ability to tell what is true from what is false when it comes to news online, a similar proportion to last year. That compared to 58% across all of the surveyed markets. AI is another emerging theme in news consumption, particularly for young people. Of respondents under age 25, 15% rely on AI chatbots and interfaces for news each week, compared to 7% of respondents overall, the report found. ChatGPT was the most mentioned AI service for news, followed by Google's Gemini and Meta AI. The trend is raising concerns about a potential loss of search referral traffic to publisher websites and apps, the report found, as chatbots eliminate the need for users to click on a story link. Text remains the most preferred way for people worldwide to consume news, although around a third say they prefer to watch the news online and 15% say they prefer to listen. Younger people are much more likely to prefer watching or listening to the news. Social media platform X, formerly Twitter, is also becoming a more popular source of news in the United States, particularly among right-leaning users and young men, with 23% of sampled Americans consuming news there - up 8 percentage points from last year. Rival networks like Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon are struggling to gain traction globally, with reach of 2% or less for news. Levels of trust in news across markets are currently stable at 40%, and unchanged for the last three years, the report found.
