Chinese team creates blockchain tech to resist attacks from quantum computers

Chinese scientists have developed a new
blockchain storage technology that they say can resist attacks from quantum computers.
Blockchain technology – which provides a shared, decentralised digital ledger that stores tamper-proof records – has shown revolutionary potential in areas like financial services and supply chain management.
Usually, blockchains use specialised encryption algorithms to verify each transaction, ensure the ledger's security, and provide transparent access to data.
'However, the rise of
quantum computers threatens to break today's blockchain security systems,' said Wu Tong, an associate professor with the University of Science and Technology Beijing.
'Even the most advanced methods struggle against quantum attacks.'

Wu worked with a team from the Beijing Institute of Technology and Guilin University of Electronic Technology to find a solution to the problem.

Chinese AI stocks to extend DeepSeek-driven run as Beijing counts on growth boost

Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) stocks are expected to defy a slowdown across industries, as the mainland relies on the technology to boost business efficiency and revive economic growth, according to investors and analysts. Advertisement Companies including Meituan and Xiaomi were set to benefit from a wave of AI integration that would transform business models, according to Morgan Stanley, as investors look for new winners after DeepSeek's breakthrough in generative AI technology. China Asset Management, one of the mainland's biggest mutual-fund firms, said last month that the country's AI adoption – estimated at 5 per cent penetration at present – was on the cusp of explosive growth, similar to personal computers in the 1980s. 'AI will probably become a key driver for China's modernisation,' said Yao Pei, an analyst at Huachuang Securities, in a report this month. 'There are lots of catalysts for AI, and AI is expected to penetrate into every industry,' notably electronics, computing and media, Yao said. DeepSeek's surprising ascent earlier this year put China's technology stocks back into the spotlight, spurring optimism that the country would be able to lead the world in AI in spite of US export curbs. Investors are identifying new prospects in the industry after making bets on platform-based developers of large language models such as Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings . Alibaba owns the Post. Advertisement Unlike the US, which had an edge in AI computing, China was focused on efficiency – emphasising revenue generated by AI-enabled offerings and cost savings achieved through high productivity, the US investment bank said.

DeepSeek's LinkedIn AI job listings show hunger for international Chinese talent

Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) start-up DeepSeek has posted a flurry of new job openings on the professional networking site LinkedIn over the past week, coinciding with Meta Platforms ' aggressive hiring blitz amid an intensifying global race for AI talent. Advertisement The Hangzhou-based company listed 10 new positions online, including two internships focused on large language models. Other roles include deep learning researchers, core systems engineers, front-end developers and full-stack engineers, based in either Hangzhou or Beijing. The job descriptions were all in Chinese, and the company highlighted its competitive edge from 'top-tier GPU [graphics processing unit] clusters and rapid experimental iteration on potential ideas'. Recruits would 'collaborate with team members who excel at both research and engineering, focusing on AGI [artificial general intelligence] that balances practical results and academic depth', according to the listings. Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has largely withdrawn from mainland China , suggesting DeepSeek is hungry for Chinese talent overseas. The start-up has also been actively posting roles on its official website and Boss Zhipin, a Chinese job board. As of this week, 18 roles were listed on the company's own site, including positions marked 'urgent' in AGI research and core engineering. Other listings were for lawyers, a chief financial officer, a chief operating officer, and human resources personnel. On Boss Zhipin, DeepSeek had more than 40 listings, with top salaries reaching 90,000 yuan (US$12,560) per month and annual bonuses equivalent to two months' pay. Advertisement Anticipation for DeepSeek's next-generation models has been high, but so far only incremental updates have been released.

Human heart structure beats 21 days in pig embryo, Chinese chimera research team says

Chinese scientists have, for the first time, cultivated a beating heart structure with human cells in a pig embryo, reporting that the heart continued to beat for 21 days unaided. Advertisement The study, led by Lai Liangxue's team from the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was announced at the International Society for Stem Cell Research's annual meeting in Hong Kong on June 12. Previously, the team had cultivated human kidneys in pigs for up to 28 days. According to a report in Nature on June 13, the team reprogrammed human stem cells by introducing genes to prevent cell death and improve their survival in pigs. 06:23 Can China claim the leadership mantle after the US quits the WHO and Paris Agreement? At the early blastocyst stage – early in pregnancy when a ball of cells forms – they implanted pre-modified human stem cells into pig embryos, which were then transferred to surrogate sows.
