League Two: How Newport County could line up versus Tranmere

The Exiles finish 2024/25 with a home encounter with Tranmere Rovers and will aim to ensure that the new boss, who will be picked by owner Huw Jenkins in the coming weeks, doesn't start the next campaign on a winless streak.
Nelson Jardim had that unfortunate situation at Cheltenham in August when the last-gasp defeat made it nine losses on the spin after Graham Coughlan's eight to finish the previous season.
County go into the Tranmere game after limping towards mathematical safety since the professional 3-0 win against Harrogate on March 15.
Draws against Bromley, MK Dons and Walsall mean that they haven't quite hit the depths of despair of last season, when Coughlan cut a frustrated and perplexed figure.
Injuries and a heavy workload took their toll after a long season that featured the highs of Manchester United in the FA Cup run and the wonderful win against Wrexham at a packed Parade.
County might not be on a losing streak but the nature of the defeats to Grimsby, Notts County, Carlisle, Colchester and Fleetwood means that there is plenty to prove.

Can this squad show more grit, determination, resilience and fight?
In truth, one afternoon against Tranmere in a battle to avoid finishing 22nd – which would be County's lowest finish since the Great Escape – will not banish such doubts.
Interim head coach Dafydd Williams wants County to show more of their traditional traits but arguably doesn't have the personnel to achieve that.
There isn't a snarling holding midfielder on the books while options are limited in defence due to the absence of the suspended Ciaran Brennan and injured James Clarke and Jaden Warner.
Can they fire in attack? It's four games without a goal and stats site fotmob states they have created just one big chance in those fixtures.
Possible County XI: Townsend, Thomas, Baker, Jameson, Glennon, McLoughlin, Antwi, Whitmore, Ajiboye, Hudlin, Kamwa.
THE OPPOSITION
A tense afternoon for Tranmere at Rodney Parade looked very possible for much of the run-in but they secured their EFL status last weekend.
A 2-0 win against Crewe at Prenton Park meant that Carlisle, who went down to defeat at Cheltenham anyway, will join Morecambe in the National League.
It has been a hugely disappointing season for Rovers, who started with plenty of hope under Nigel Adkins after a strong second half of the previous campaign.
Tranmere probably showed too much faith in Adkins when things were going wrong and interim boss Andy Crosby has got them out of a pickle in a terrific audition to get the top job permanently.
Crosby has been in charge for 12 fixtures and has a record of five wins, five draws and two defeats.
He is averaging 1.67 points per game, which is the tally that third-placed Bradford have over the course of the season.

LAST TIME
County were awful when beaten 2-1 at Tranmere in November, Connor Jennings and Kieron Morris earning the spoils for Rovers despite Kyle Hudlin's late header.
A miserable afternoon was completed when Jameson was sent off for a daft booking in added time.
Tranmere also won 2-1 in Newport in the run-in last season thanks to a brace by influential loanee Rob Apter.
League Two fixtures (all 3pm): Accrington v Chesterfield, Bradford v Fleetwood, Bromley v Cheltenham, Carlisle v Salford, Colchester v Barrow, Crewe v Walsall, Grimsby v AFC Wimbledon, Morecambe v Harrogate, Newport County v Tranmere, Notts County v Doncaster, Port Vale v Gillingham, Swindon v Milton Keynes Dons.

Padres scratch RHP Michael King (knee), place him on IL

August 14 - The San Diego Padres placed standout right-hander Michael King on the 15-day injured list Thursday due to left knee inflammation. King, 30, was slated to start Friday night's showdown against the host Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres lead the Dodgers by one game in the National League West race. San Diego recalled right-hander Randy Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move. The Padres didn't immediately announce a new starter for Friday's game. King (4-2, 2.81) just returned from an injury that sidelined him for nearly three months. He gave up two runs and four hits in two-plus innings against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. King's previous appearance for San Diego was May 18. King was placed on the 15-day IL on May 25 due to a lack of strength in his pitching shoulder. He was later diagnosed with a thoracic nerve issue and eventually transferred to the 60-day list. King, the club's Opening Day starter, made 10 starts before the injury. The Padres acquired King from the New York Yankees following the 2023 season as part of the package in which Juan Soto went to the Bronx. King went 13-9 with a 2.95 ERA in 30 starts and one relief appearance last season. He was 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA in the postseason, including striking out 12 in seven shutout innings in a win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the National League wild-card series. Vasquez, 26, is 3-5 with a 3.93 ERA in 22 starts for the Padres this season. --Field Level Media

Wrexham exile backed into a corner by transfer decision as he shows his true character

Wrexham frontman Ollie Palmer has been told to find a new club by manager Phil Parkinson this summer, but the 33-year-old has opened up on his determination to fight for his place Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer has laid bare his anguish after being axed from the squad and told to seek pastures new. The 33-year-old has been an important player for the Red Dragons since his switch from Wimbledon in January 2022, netting 46 times in 156 outings during the club's meteoric rise from the National League to the Championship. ‌ However, Palmer found himself cast aside for much of the latter half of last season in League One following the acquisitions of forwards Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez. Manager Phil Parkinson recently urged him to explore options elsewhere after drafting in additional attacking reinforcements this summer. ‌ But Palmer's prospects of remaining at the Racecourse Ground were given fresh hope on Tuesday after he scored two injury-time headers as Wrexham defeated Hull City on penalties in the EFL Cup first round. A knock sustained by new arrival Kieffer Moore during last weekend's 2-1 league defeat at Southampton might also prompt Parkinson into a change of heart. ‌ Following the Hull clash, Palmer confessed to struggling with his unexpected tumble down the pecking order last term, whilst maintaining his resolve to remain and prove his worth. "It's hard, My family are in London and football isn't always all rosy," he told The Athletic. "You're out of the team, travelling up and down the country. Not being involved with the squad through February, March and April is hard, and it gets a little bit dark. "But you can't pity yourself. You've just got to remain professional. As much as you want to be part of it, you have to show some character. I'm lucky to be involved in a dressing room (where) they're the best team-mates in the country. "The new lads have come in and embraced our culture, our humour and the togetherness. I want to be part of it. I will remain professional and give everything I've got until this chapter finishes, whenever that may be. "All I've ever done is try my best. I can hold my head up high. If the gaffer chooses to select me on Saturday in any format, I'll be ready to take the chance. I'll give him everything." ‌ Wrexham found themselves 3-1 down to Hull until the dying moments on Tuesday evening. That was before Palmer struck twice within 70 seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. The striker also found the net from the spot as Wrexham triumphed 5-3 at the Racecourse Ground. Palmer's display this week highlighted his determination, though playing time could become even more scarce with Wrexham on the verge of securing a club-record £10million move for forward Nathan Broadhead. ‌ Parkinson's squad head to fellow Championship outfit Preston North End in the competition's next stage later this month, and despite growing competition for places, Palmer remains hopeful of making his mark. He added: "I've been through a lot with this football club. People sometimes forget how many games I played last season. I started every game bar one until the end of January. Then, changes were made and it was about me digging deep. "[I was] training, remaining professional and doing what I can for this club. Albeit, maybe in the background for the last 16 games. But I was always ready if an opportunity came along. It happened tonight [against Hull], technically in the league above against a top Championship football club. That's football, right?".
