Jordan readies for 31st FIBA Asia Cup

Jordan Times3 days ago
AMMAN — The national basketball team has been announced in the final stretch as they prepare to play the 31st FIBA Asia Cup 2025 in Saudi Arabia less than a week away.
There has been much debate among observers and fans after Jordan ended participation in the Beirut Tournament last week losing 89-79 to Lebanon, Egypt 70-60 and Iran 70-61. As the coach announced the final roster, it was confirmed that many stars like Ahmad Duweiri and Ronday Jefferson and others would be missing the upcoming competitions.
The make-up of the Jordan squad leaves much to debate as incoming Canadian coach Roy Rana has to grapple with attaining results while building a new base for the national team which has had to undergo a revamp at a critical time with many players aging, uncommitted or not being in top form.
Now, the new squad has to try to keep up Jordan's impressive Asian record at the August 5-17 FIBA Asia Cup to which they advanced with an unbeaten record.
Jordan will play in Group C alongside China, Saudi Arabia and India
Group A: Qatar, Australia, South Korea, Lebanon,
Group B: Guam, Japan, Syria, Iran
Group D: Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, Iraq, the Philippines.
Group winners will qualify to the quarters while the second and third teams will play to advance. Jordan is now 35th in FIBA rankings, 8th in Asia and the 2nd best Arab team.
Jordan has qualified to the FIBA Asia Cup 17 times. In the last edition in 2022, Jordan finished 4th. Previously, their best position was finishing runner-up in 2011 and 3rd in 2009. Jordan is also the 2023 Asian Games silver medalist and three-time qualifier to the World Cup, 2010, 2019 and 2023.
Earlier this year, Spaniard Juan Manuel 'Piti' Hurtado replaced Wisam Al-Sous, in the last qualifying stage before Rana was named the senior men's team coach for the upcoming Asia Cup.
Rana who helped Egypt qualify to the 2023 World Cup and the Olympic qualifiers 2024 and was assistant to the German team during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics has had to grapple with the roller coaster ride of the game lately, which after years of a temporary committee leading the game, took time until a new board was assigned only to be followed by delaying starts to all national squad preparations.
Lagging results by most national teams were followed by reports that JBF Chairman Ahmad Hanandeh submitted his resignation after the U19 men's squad failed to impress at their second time at the World Cup. Jordan had qualified to the U19 World Cup after a 4th place finish at the U18 Asia Cup in 2024 about 30 years after first qualifying in 1995.
Jordan lost all their matches, finishing last after an unimpressive competitive form. In the first Round, Jordan lost the Dominican Republic and Switzerland and abstained from playing against Israel. In the Round of 16, they lost to the US and Mali in the matches deciding 9-16 spots. In their last match, they again lost to the Dominican Republic to finish last.
In addition, Jordan's women's team finished third in the Arab Championship. In the U16 WABA women's tournament, which ended Wednesday, Jordan lost to Iran 69-4, Lebanon 64-45 and Syria 61-52.
In the U16 WABA men's tournament, Jordan lost all three matches to Iran 96-88, Lebanon 88-68 and Syria 88-66 as Lebanon won the title.

Jordan opens FIBA Asia Cup against India

AMMAN — Jordan tips off their Group C matches at the 31st FIBA Asia Cup 2025 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia playing India on Tuesday before facing it. A host and China in Round 1 group matches of the Asian competition. A total of 16 teams are playing at the August 5-17 in four groups: Group A: Qatar, Australia, South Korea, Lebanon; Group B: Guam, Japan, Syria, Iran; Group D: Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, Iraq, the Philippines. Group winners will move to the quarters while the second and third teams will play qualification matches to advance. It will be Jordan's 17th time at the FIBA Asia Cup. Previously, Jordan was on the medals podium twice finishing runner-up in 2011 and 3rd in 2009. At the last 2022 edition Jordan finished 4th. The event has been dominated by China who won the title 19 times, Philippines 5, Iran 3, South Korea, Japan and Australia twice each. Jordan's Zeid Alkhas and naturalized Rasheim Wright are on the list of highest scoring averages in the tournament while Lebanon's Fadi Khatib and Iran's Hamed Haddadi lead the all-time top scorers, with Wright 7th. Jordan, the 2023 Asian Games silver medalist and three-time qualifier to the World Cup, 2010, 2019 and 2023, is now 35th in FIBA rankings, 8th in Asia and the 2nd best Arab team. After much delays in handing over the team to incoming Canadian coach Roy Rana, challenges were coupled with the short time to regroup and prepare while grappling with a team revamp at a critical time with many players aging, uncommitted or not being in top form. The current roster has the pressure of trying to keep up Jordan's impressive Asian record at the FIBA Asia Cup to which they advanced with an unbeaten record. However, the make-up of the Jordan lineup leaves much to debate after they played at the Beirut Tournament losing to Lebanon, Egypt and Iran. Stars like Ahmad Duweiri and Ronday Jefferson are missing the lineup and it remains to be seen if the ambitious yet relatively less experienced younger players with less competitive experience can muster enough harmony and exhibit their competitive readiness to attain an advanced position. Following the FIBA Asia Cup, Jordan will play the Asian qualifiers for the FIBA World Cup where 16 teams will play in four groups in in 6 windows from November 2025 to March 2027. 7 of the 16 Asian sides will advance to the 2027 World Cup slated for Doha, Qatar which will have 32 teams competing for the title. Jordan was drawn in Group C alongside Iran, Syria and Iraq in the first round of qualifiers. Group A includes Australia, New Zealand, Philippines and Guam; Group B Japan China Korea and Chinese Taipei; Group D Lebanon Saudi Arabia, India and Qatar. The Kingdom hopes to qualify to the World Cup for the third consecutive and fourth overall time after first qualifying in 2010.

Al Hussein, Ramtha impress in Pro League first round

AMMAN — The first round of the 73rd edition of the CFI Jordan Pro League saw a dominant start by reigning champions Al Hussein Irbid, who kicked off their campaign with a 5–2 victory over Ahli at Al Hasan Stadium in Irbid. The match was largely controlled by Al Hussein, especially in the second half, reflecting the team's strong summer transfer activity. Al Hussein opened with two goals, but Ahli managed to level the score — once before the end of the first half and again in the 70th minute through Mohammad Shatti. The response was swift, as Al Hussein regained the lead five minutes later and sealed the win with two goals in stoppage time by Mohammad Deeb. The result placed them at the top of the table, ahead of Al Baqaa who secured a 2–0 win over Sama Sarhan. The highlight fixture of the round saw Ramtha stun Wehdat 1-0 at King Abdullah II Stadium in Amman. Veteran forward Hamza Dardour scored the winner in the 63rd minute, silencing the home crowd and delivering a statement performance for Ramtha. Faisali, the record 35-time title holders, completed the round with a 2–1 win over Jazira. Despite going a man down in the 76th minute, they managed to score the decisive goal just a minute later, securing all three points. This season introduces a new format to the Jordanian top flight, with the number of participating clubs reduced to ten and the league being played over three stages instead of two. The revamped structure is expected to increase competitiveness and intensity across the season.
