India calls Trump's tariff threat over Russian oil purchases ‘unjustified'

India condemned as 'unjustified' a threat by Donald Trump to significantly raise tariffs on the South Asian country's exports to the US, escalating tensions over New Delhi 's purchase of Russian oil. Mr Trump on Monday accused India of profiting from discounted Russian crude while disregarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. "India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian oil, they are then, for much of the oil purchased, selling it on the open market for big profits," the US president said on social media. 'They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian war machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the tariff paid by India to the USA." India's foreign ministry responded swiftly. 'The targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable," spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, adding that New Delhi would "take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security'. Mr Jaiswal also highlighted the ongoing energy and industrial trade between Russia and the West. He pointed out that the EU had goods trade with Russia of £57.38 bn in 2024 in addition to £14.62 bn in services trade the previous year. The US, meanwhile, continued to import Russian uranium for its nuclear sector and palladium for electric vehicles. 'It is revealing that the very nations criticising India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia,' he said. 'Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion for them.' The escalating rhetoric marks a new low in a once-warm relationship between Mr Trump and Indian leader Narendra Modi, characterised by public camaraderie and joint rallies. Growing friction over trade, energy policy, and Mr Trump's overtures to rival Pakistan have strained US ties with New Delhi, and pressure from Western capitals to reduce its reliance on Russian oil is only piling up the pressure. Indian officials argued that the pivot to Russian oil was a market-driven necessity after traditional supplies were redirected to Europe following Western sanctions. India imported an average of 1.75 million barrels a day of Russian oil from January to June 2025, making it the largest buyer of seaborne Russian crude, up one per cent from a year ago, according to data analysed by Reuters. In recent months, however, public sector refiners in India, facing pressure and uncertainty, have started reducing Russian oil purchases. Imports in July fell to 1.6 million barrels per day, a 24 per cent decline from June and a 23.5 per cent fall year-on-year, according to tracking data from Kpler. Indian officials though maintained that there had been no formal policy change. Indian Oil Corp, the country's largest refiner, recently purchased 7 million barrels from the US, Canada, and Middle Eastern suppliers, Reuters reported, quoting unnamed trade sources. Mr Trump earlier imposed a 25 per cent levy on Indian imports, further unsettling bilateral relations. The US is India's largest trading partner. Indian exports to the US totalled £68.17bn in 2024 with a trade surplus of £35.88bn. India is not alone in importing Russian crude. According to think tank GTRI, China imported £49.45bn worth of Russian oil in 2024, compared to India's £39bn. Yet, Mr Trump has so far refrained from criticising Beijing. Eric Garcetti, former US ambassador to New Delhi, previously said that Washington supported Indian crude purchases from Russia to help stabilise energy markets. Indian energy minister Hardeep Singh Puri similarly defended the imports as both essential and sanctioned within the price cap framework. 'India helped stabilise global energy prices,' Mr Puri told CNBC. 'We were advised, including by our friends in the United States, to please buy Russian oil – but within the price cap.'

Some visa applicants could soon be asked to pay up to $15,000 bond to enter the US

The US State Department is proposing a significant new requirement for business and tourist visa applicants, potentially demanding a bond of up to $15,000 to enter the United States. This move could render the process unaffordable for many prospective visitors. A notice, due for publication in the Federal Register on Tuesday, outlines a 12-month pilot programme. Under this scheme, individuals from nations identified as having high visa overstay rates or deficient internal document security controls could be compelled to post bonds of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 when applying for a visa. The programme, set to commence within 15 days of its formal publication, is deemed essential to shield the US government from financial liability should a visitor fail to adhere to their visa terms. The notice specifies that "aliens applying for visas as temporary visitors for business or pleasure and who are nationals of countries identified by the department as having high visa overstay rates, where screening and vetting information is deemed deficient, or offering citizenship by investment, if the alien obtained citizenship with no residency requirement, may be subject to the pilot program." The specific countries affected will be listed once the initiative begins. Citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Programme would be exempt from the bond requirement, and waivers could also be granted based on an applicant's individual circumstances. While visa bonds have been mooted previously but never implemented, the State Department had traditionally discouraged them due to the administrative burden and potential public misperceptions. However, the department now asserts that this prior stance "is not supported by any recent examples or evidence, as visa bonds have not generally been required in any recent period."

Gavin Newsom joins 'all-out war' against Texas in Democratic power grab that could tear country apart

Gavin Newsom has joined the gerrymandering war Democrats are fighting against Texas Republicans. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the arrest of dozens of state Democrats who fled to block a Republican plan to redraw congressional districts in Donald Trump 's favor. Fifty‑seven Democratic lawmakers skipped town, flying to Illinois and New York in a dramatic bid to halt the GOP 's effort to push through a new electoral map that could hand Republicans five additional Congressional seats in Texas - boosting Trump's chances of holding Congress in the midterms. In a Monday night press conference, Newsom - who many believe will run for president in 2028 - said he will respond in kind should Abbott redraw his districts, joining what Texas Democrat Congresswoman Julie Johnson calls an 'all-out war.' 'The proposal that we're advancing with the legislature has a trigger only if they move forward, to dismantling the protocols that are well-established,' he said. 'Would the state of California move forward in kind? Fighting? Yes, fire with fire.' He said that he has not yet seen the state party's re-drawing of California's districts, he set his terms for approving them. 'That process has to have the concurrence, the support of two-thirds of the legislature,' he said. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (pictured) has ordered the arrest of dozens of state Democrats who fled to block a Republican plan to redraw congressional districts in Donald Trump 's favor The Democrats own 30 of 40 seats in the state senate and 60 of 80 seats in the state assembly. 'The maps, we believe, should be transparent. They should be provided in a transparent way to the public, and as a consequence, those maps are being processed and will be brought to light.' He also offered Californians themselves a chance to endorse the maps in time for the midterms. 'We will offer them the opportunity to make judgments for themselves, again, only if Texas moves forward,' Newsom said. 'I'll reinforce that we believe it should be a national model, independent national redistricting, and it would revert back to its original form, but it's done in response to the existential realities that we're now facing. Things have changed, facts have changed, so we must change.' Newsom follows Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a potential 2028 presidential contender and outspoken Trump critic, who welcomed the fleeing Texas Democrats to Chicago on Sunday after having been in quiet talks with them for weeks. 'This is not just rigging the system in Texas,' Pritzker said Sunday. 'It's about rigging the system against the rights of all Americans for years to come.' U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey of Texas urged other Democratic governors to join Pritzker, Newsom and New York's Kathy Hochul. Democrats, Veasey said, have too often 'shown up to a gunfight with good intentions, no knives.' But 'that era is over,' Veasey declared Monday from Illinois. 'We are not going to unilaterally disarm.' Newsom reiterated that he was only acting in defense of his state. 'They've triggered this response and we're not going to roll over and we're going to fight fire with fire, but we're going to do so not just punching with the weight of the fourth largest economy, the most populous state in our union, the size of 21 state populations combined,' he said. 'We also will punch above our weight in terms of the impact of what we're doing, and I think that should be absorbed by those in the Texas delegation. Whatever they are doing will be neutered here in the state of California, and they will pay that price.' Abbott gave the Democrats until 3 p.m. Monday to return to Austin, warning they risked arrest and even losing their seats. When none came back, Republican leaders authorized law enforcement to bring them in 'by any means necessary.' 'The sergeant‑at‑arms and any appointed officers are directed to send for all absentees whose attendance is not excused, and to secure and maintain their attendance under warrant of arrest if necessary,' House Speaker Dustin Burrows, a Republican from Lubbock announced. By fleeing the state, Democrats broke quorum in the Texas legislature, preventing Republicans from conducting official business. Texas House Democrats abandoned their duty and are holding flood relief and property tax cuts hostage. I ordered Texas DPS to arrest and return every derelict House Democrat to the Texas Capitol. This order will remain in effect until all missing Democrats are accounted for. — Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) August 4, 2025 Democrats call the redistricting plan a blatant power grab and told they welcome the showdown with Republicans. 'When we have the President of the United States looking for five Congressional seats, this can eventually impact the entire United States, so to say that we are doing this to grand stand is bulls***, with all due respect,' Texas Rep. Linda Garcia told Monday afternoon. Among the liberals on the lamb, two members of the House are traveling with children-- a nine and five-year-old. Garcia decided to bring her nine-year-old son after not having great child care options and realizing she might be in Chicago until Aug. 19-- when the current special session ends. 'What I want him to understand is that sometimes we have to make very big sacrifices in order to generate change,' the Mesquite (a Dallas suburb) Democrat shared in a phone interview from Chicago. 'I walked him through worst possible scenarios that could take place, including getting arrested, getting bombarded by he has been very brave.' Abbott doubled down by ordering Texas troopers to arrest all rouge Democrats Monday afternoon. Garcia's elementary school student has found a playmate in the five-year-old grandchild of another representative who was forced to bring the boy as well. 'This is going to be one of the greatest lessons he could learn. I would hope that in the future he would recall the courage that as a mother this requires,' she said, her voice cracking with emotion. They have been working with lawyers who told them arrests were a likely outcome. However, the Lone Star State Democrats believe this is a moment of inflection nationally, particularly because the congressional district that will be redrawn in Texas if the GOP gets its way would impact Black and Hispanic communities. 'You're going to steal the power and the voices of black and brown communities-- we're not just going roll over and just allow you to do that,' Rep. Lauren Ashley Simmons added. 'The message that I'm receiving from my community is that we need to stand up and hold the line.' In fact, the Dems wouldn't share their location in Chicago with Daily Mail, explaining they knew arrests were looming early Monday. 'We know that Donald Trump is the one spear-heading all of this. We don't know what he's capable of, we are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best,' Rep. Christina Morales said via phone interview. State Attorney General Ken Paxton, bragged he successfully secured a Texas Supreme Court ruling that held that the House could arrest absent members to secure their presence and establish a quorum when Democrats fled the state in 2021. 'If he wants to round up and arrest duly elected officials whose constiuents are watching and who put us in office, so be it,' Rep. Simmons said of Abbott. 'I hope he understands, you can only push people so far to their breaking point and then there will be a response.'
