Kashmir authorities announce summer break in schools across valley
Authorities in Kashmir on Saturday announced a 15-day summer break — starting June 23 — in the schools across the valley in the wake of the prevailing heatwave. The schools across Kashmir would observe the summer break from June 23 to July 7, an order issued by the Director of School Education, Kashmir, said.
'Consequent upon the approval conveyed by the competent authority, it is hereby ordered that all the Government and recognised Private Schools up to Higher Secondary level functioning in the Kashmir Division shall observe summer vacation w.e.f 23-06-2025 to 07-07-2025,' the order read.
Kashmir is currently experiencing a heatwave as the temperatures have soared to record high in the last two decades.
Srinagar witnessed the hottest June day in two decades on Friday as the mercury rose to the maximum of 35.5 degrees Celsius, which was 6.3 degrees above the normal. On the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, the city recorded 23.2 degrees Celsius –? the highest night temperature since 1990 when it recorded 23.6.
The all-time highest night temperature in June stands at 24.6 degrees recorded on June 29, 1978.
At 16.8 degrees, Pahalgam recorded the third highest night temperature ever in June, and at 20.4 degrees, Kokernag also recorded the third highest night temperature ever in the month. Similarly, at 21.1 degrees, Kupwara recorded the fifth highest night temperature ever in June.

The air quality was recorded 'satisfactory' at 9 am on June 22, with an AQI reading of 83, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to the CPCB, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51–100 'satisfactory', 101–200 'moderate', 201–300 'poor', 301–400 'very poor' and 401–500 'severe'. IMD issues orange alert for several states The IMD has issued an orange alert for eight states, warning of intense rainfall activity. The alert covers Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, on June 21, the IMD had warned of 'heavy to very heavy rainfall' over Northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and the Konkan-Goa region, with the wet spell expected to continue from June 21 to June 26. "Conditions are favourable for further advance of monsoon into the remaining parts of North Arabian Sea, more areas of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and some parts of Jammu & Kashmir–Gilgit-Baltistan–Muzaffarabad and Ladakh during the next two days," the IMD said.

Jobe Bellingham said his first goal for Borussia Dortmund was a surreal experience as the new signing from Sunderland made an immediate impact at the Club World Cup on Saturday. Bellingham scored the third goal in Dortmund's 4-3 win over South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns at the TQL Stadium and was named man-of-the-match at the end of the Group F encounter. 'It's a little bit surreal really when the ball hits in the net, it's just crazy,' the 19-year-old said. 'Everything happened so slowly but yeah I'm really pleased.' But Bellingham avoided an attempted block by a defender, and sent the keeper the wrong way, by cleverly holding his shot for a split second. Bellingham said it had been a hard assignment in the midday sun in Ohio, where the temperature was 32 degrees Celsius. 'I think the conditions make it so difficult, especially for us being a European team. They (Sundowns) played a fantastic game but I'm sure they're used to this kind of weather, but we definitely aren't. 'But it's something we are going to have to adapt to as the tournament goes on.' Bellingham said he was happy to be playing so soon after signing a five-year deal for what reports said was a 33 million euros ($37.70 million) deal. 'The lads have really helped me settle in and it's been a different experience because rather than signing and then having a summer off, I've got an opportunity to meet everyone and get to grips with how we play and how the coach wants us to play as a team.'
