‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives' Biggest Scandals

Cosmopolitan20-05-2025

MomTok survived! Yes, season two of Hulu's The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has finally aired on the streamer, bringing 10 new juicy episodes full of Mormon secrets including more cheating rumors, more swinging deep dives and a dabble in ketamine.
Following the lives of a group of Mormon Mom TikTokers, the series returned late last week and it's safe to say we spent our entire weekend binge watching the women fight over charcuterie boards. What?! Can't a girl have a hobby?
And this season had even more drama (we weren't sure it was even possible) than season 1, racking up the number of scandals this group have gone through. And there's quite a lot to keep track of, so if you've forgotten or want to relive all the tea, then here are the seven biggest scandals this group of women (and their equally dramatic partners) have gone through.
The whole reason we have the show in the first place is due to a soft-swinging scandal that involved some of the women.
MomTok started in the pandemic, but it really kicked off when one member Taylor Frankie Paul alleged she and other MomTok members had engaged in soft-swinging, and told the entire internet about it. The other members denied it at the time.
It went viral and later Taylor split from her then husband Tate Paul. It also fractured her relationship with many of the women, including her bestie Miranda McWhorter, who originally denied what was going on.
During season one Taylor started the season on the outs with the other women, but made her way back in and stayed friends.
Then in season two Miranda joined the cast and spilled the tea on what happened at the soft-swinging parties. She maintains she only ever engaged is kissing and that sex never took place at these parties.
"Well the thing is, like, the height of what I was ever involved in was like playing spin the bottle and like kissing other people,' she told the other women during her entrance to the show. 'So it was very jarring for me for Taylor to come out and say like everyone was hooking up with everyone because that was simply not the case at all. No one had sex ever. Period. I will go to my grave.'
However, she later appeared on The Viall Files, and did admit that she and her husband at the time, Chase McWhorter, did have sex in one room while another couple were in it, they just never actually switched partners. The couple later announced their divorce in 2024.
Following her split from husband Tate Paul, Taylor got into a relationship with Dakota Mortensen. Early on in their relationship, the police were called to Taylor's house after neighbors called up after hearing an altercation.
Taylor, who was intoxicated at the time, was arrested and Dakota was overheard talking to police saying: "She just attacked the crap out of me." Taylor could then be heard saying: "You threw me in the garage."
She was later charged with domestic violence and in August 2023 she pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, while 'the other four charges were dismissed with prejudice,' as per the New York Post.
The first season also kicked off with another scandal—the revelation that Whitney Leavitt's husband had been found on Tinder.
Whitney was another big name in the MomTok world before the show, and as the series kicks off it's revealed Whitney was coming back from Hawaii, where she claimed that she and her family had been living to avoid the soft swinging fallout of MomTok.
However, she later revealed that was not the case. She rather candidly opened up about her husband, and father of her children, Conner Leavitt being discovered on Tinder. She had initially denied the rumors but later confirmed that Conner was on Tinder and had a porn addiction.
Ok, so this is not in the same vein as the other scandals, but it's equally as shocking to me.
Back in season one we were introduced to one MomToker Jen Affleck. She has a rather noticeable surname and she told viewers that she was in fact related to the Ben Affleck.
Well, her husband Zac's family were, with Jen telling People at the time: 'Zac's dad has [met him], when [Ben] was very little. I'm hoping to meet him one day, too!'
Jen even went as far as to say she was the original 'Jennifer Affleck' referencing Ben Affleck's ex-wife Jennifer Lopez, 'My name happens to be not only Jen, but Jennifer Lynn Affleck, which is the exact same as JLo. She went from Jennifer Lynn Lopez to Jennifer Lynn Affleck, which is so crazy.'
However, one season later it turns out it was actually all a big joke from Zac's family. The surname is brought up in a season two episode, with Jen confronting her husband about the name. She says to Zac that Ben is his second cousin, which Zac denies.
Jen then claimed that Zac's family had told her this previously, adding: 'You're not going to make me feel stupid when that's all I've been told from your family.' However, Zac went onto insist it's just a family joke and they are not actually related in anyway to the Affleck family.
The first season of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives ended on a bombshell confession from Mayci that she had heard Taylor's boyfriend Dakota was cheating on her.
Taylor and Dakota's relationship was up and down throughout the series, however they were expecting their first baby together. During the final scenes of the season Mayci is seen calling the woman in question who is said to have cheated with Dakota.
In season two we thankfully got an update. Enter: Jenna, the woman Dakota is alleged to have been hooking up with when he first started dating Taylor.
Taylor meets up with her at Mayci's house in the opening episode of the new season. She showed messages Jenna and Dakota had sent to each other, and it was later revealed Jenna had asked Dakota if he was dating Taylor and he allegedly said: 'No, that's just for clout. She's just helping me build my social media.'
Taylor, of course, struggled to hear this, and tried to match up timelines of dates certain things had happened. Later on in the episode Dakota said, 'When I saw Mayci call Jenna, I just didn't want more problems. So I decided to tell Taylor we just made out.'
He also added: 'I deleted some messages that if she were to read those, that would essentially make me lose her and my son. I did lie. I was always doing it selfishly to protect myself.'
The couple have since split.
Sure alcohol, coffee and tea are all banned in the Mormon way of life, but one thing that is on the menu? Ketamine.
The pair had a difficult time in season one, namely when Zac struggled with seeing Jen go to a Chippendales gig. It led to a massive argument between the pair, with Zac threatening to end their relationship.
They didn't breakup, but instead headed to New York to check out medical schools as Zac was considering moving the family there. At one point it seemed like Jen wouldn't come back for season two.
But she did, and she kicked off the couple's season 2 journey with a bang. They were seen in one episode doing ketamine therapy as a way to improve their relationship.
During one confessional Jen explains the purpose of having ketamine therapy: 'Zac and I will definitely have a lot to work on, and ketamine therapy is supposed to reset a lot of past traumas or habits you've created.'
The couple are then seen doing the therapy and addressing the grey area the Mormon Church has with the drug.
'Ketamine is in the grey area when it comes to the church,' she said. 'Yeah, the church doesn't promote ketamine, but it's definitely not like a commandment exactly. Ketamine is a pure example of how much he's willing to do to show up for the relationship.'
Just like season one ended with cheating allegations so too did season two, however this time it was MomToker Jessi Ngatikaura who was accused.
During the final episode fellow cast member Layla met up with Vanderpump Villa cast member Marciano.
Before season two began, several of the Mormon Wives cast filmed a crossover appearance on Vanderpump Villa. And there was then speculation that Jesse and Maricano had kissed while hanging out in West Hollywood. Jessi denied the allegation, saying: 'If I was dumb enough to do that, I wouldn't do it in public.'
Marciano then claimed to Layla during the final scenes of season two that he and Jessi had slept together and had an ongoing affair.
Jessi, who is married to Jordan Ngatikaura, hasn't directly commented on this allegation, however on her Instagram a few days she did share the video below and captioned it: 'I'll speak when I can.'
SO. MUCH. DRAMA.

‘A lot comes with jumping into that inferno': Questlove explores the burden of Black genius in ‘Sly Lives!'

To follow up his Oscar-winning Summer of Soul, Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson turned his focus on one of the landmark acts featured in that lauded documentary, Sly and the Family Stone. The result, Hulu's Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius), is now in the mix for an Emmy Award. 'I like documentaries that make learning fun. Maybe I'm a natural-born griot,' he tells Gold Derby. 'It just took five decades to get here.' More from GoldDerby Directors open up about identity, risk and emotional storytelling at Disney's FYC fest 'M*A*S*H' star Loretta Swit dies at 87, and more of today's top stories 'Maybe Happy Ending' star Darren Criss on his Tony nomination for playing a robot: 'Getting to do this is the true win' Questlove traces his passion for unearthing and sharing music history back to his early years on The Tonight Show as bandleader for the Roots. "On the first day of The Tonight Show, someone told Jimmy [Fallon] and I, 'Everything that you ever know in your life is going to come out in this job,'' the artist recounts. This formative moment shaped his creative philosophy, one that prioritizes education through entertainment. 'I'd rather educate you than entertain you,' he says. 'But I figured out a way to reverse it, so you're so distracted by how entertaining the presentation is that you don't realize my ulterior motive is always to plant a seed and spark an idea." The idea for Sly Lives!, his exploration of Sly Stone's musical genius, arose while editing a pivotal moment of the band's footage from the Harlem Cultural Festival for Summer of Soul. 'I told my editor, 'Yo, this [performance] is 10 days from Woodstock. This is a dress rehearsal for Sly. In 10 days, he's going to go into hyperspeed.' I told them, 'That's the movie I want to see.'' Fate seemed to intervene shortly after when Common called Questlove out of the blue. 'He said, 'I own the life rights to Sly Stone. … You wouldn't be interested in that, would you?'' Questlove recalls, still awe-struck by the coincidence. 'That's when I knew Siri or somebody from the government was listening, because there's no way Common could've heard my exact conversation about wanting someone to make this movie — and it lands in our lap.'' Hulu In Sly Lives!, Questlove aims to showcase the cultural impact of Stone. Despite creating timeless classics like 'Dance to the Music' and 'Everyday People,' Stone's legacy is often overshadowed by what Questlove refers to as self-sabotage. 'There's footage in the film where Parliament-Funkadelic is on stage with him, and it's surreal. It's like, 'You're literally the teacher of all this, Sly, but you're now cosplaying a costar in the world you created.' "I tell people, after the seventh year, Sly drops the baton and the person that comes along the road and picks the baton up to finish the mission will actually be Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson will do, 10 years later, what was going to be expected for Sly to do after Woodstock, which was become this mega huge star beyond the stratosphere. But there's a lot that comes with jumping into that inferno, and that's what we learned in this film." Questlove posits that part of Stone's struggles stem from the weight of responsibility attached to his brilliance and success — a theme he makes central to the film's title. 'It's not just your journey, it's the burden of carrying 20 other people with you," he explains. 'Our level of success is way different than mainstream success because there's so much more that comes with it — there's people in your past that you might feel obligated to take care of. Sometimes it gets to be too much. It's understandable why some people break at the seams." It's the burden of Black genius. Despite the challenges, Stone's innovations are undeniable. Questlove marvels at how many of Stone's contributions to music shaped the industry, from pioneering multi-track recording to conceptual music videos a decade before MTV's advent. 'Even in that medium, Sly was ahead of the game,' he emphasizes. Questlove was intentional about serving three distinct audiences with Sly Lives!: 'There's the first-generation Sly Stone fans, anyone born around 1940. Then there's my generation, who learned about Sly through our parents — or through hip-hop. And finally, there's the people who don't know who Sly is at all — and you have to make sure they're covered, too.' 'For me, my sweet spot was always with the hip-hop heads,' he says. "You might be aware that Arrested Development's 'People Everyday' is 'Everyday People.' You might recognize the drums from 'The Humpty Dance' as 'Sing a Simple Song.' You might have some sort of hip-hop-adjacent, 'Oh, that LL Cool J loop is definitely Sly Stone.' You might be that person. Any chance that I got to throw a bone to hip-hop heads, I took." The documentary also indulges Questlove's passion for rare musical treasures. With access to Stone's vault, the filmmaker unearthed unreleased alternate takes and versions of hits like 'Thank You for Talkin' to Me, Africa' and 'Everyday People.' But fitting the entirety of Sly Stone's genius into a single film proved daunting. 'There are trillions of Sly genius stories,' Questlove admits. One such story, ultimately left on the cutting room floor, highlights Sly's remarkable real-time creativity during an urgent re-edit of 'Stand!' after testing it at Whisky a Go Go in 1969. 'Sly was a little disappointed that people weren't losing their minds to his new single,' Questlove recounts. 'Then, a girl he was with gave him the inspiration, saying, 'It's 1969, man. We need a get-down part.'' "Sly literally wakes the band up as the club is letting out at 1:45 a.m. and says, 'Get to the studio now. We made a mistake!' And they get to the studio and they work on what we now know as the ending of 'Stand!,' and he calls up Columbia the next day. He's like, 'Destroy all the 45s. We have a new ending. Forget that version.' They're like, 'We already printed it up.' So there's about 40,000 copies of the original 'Stand!' out there. I was lucky to find one." On June 5, Hulu will debut a new version of Sly Lives! with Questlove and Joseph Patel offering insightful, humorous and often confessional commentary on the making of their documentary, Sly Lives!, and the film's theme, the burden of Black genius. Meanwhile, Questlove has another documentary in Emmy contention this year: Ladies and Gentlemen... 50 Years of SNL Music. Like Sly Lives!, it also began with a phone call. Lorne Michaels, SNL's iconic creator, approached him with a simple question: Would Questlove help tell the story of SNL's musical history in time for its 50th anniversary? 'It was almost to the point where I thought, 'Wait, do you even know who I am? How did I get here?'' Questlove laughs, recalling his initial hesitation about the iconic 17th-floor meeting with Michaels. What started as a simple plan to catalog the '50 greatest musical performances' on SNL became a transformative project. 'By the time I chose my 30th clip, we weren't even at 1988 yet. I knew I couldn't fairly choose just 50 performances. So I spent a year and a half watching 939 complete episodes of SNL." The laborious process enriched Questlove's understanding of the show's musical evolution. 'It was fun, though,' he admits. 'I enjoyed it.' Through Sly Lives! and Ladies and Gentlemen... 50 Years of SNL Music, Questlove reaffirms his belief in the transformative power of music storytelling. Whether revisiting Sly Stone's forgotten innovations or cataloging SNL's greatest performances, Questlove invites audiences to see these moments with fresh eyes. Yet, underneath the entertainment, a deeper mission remains — to spark ideas, build bridges through music, and honor the unyielding legacy of Black genius. Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) is now streaming on Hulu, and Ladies and Gentlemen... 50 Years of SNL Music is on Peacock. Originally appeared on E! Online Patrick Mahomes and are on Taylor Swift's team. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and his wife both expressed their support for the "Long Love" singer—who has been dating Chiefs player Travis Kelce since 2023—after she announced May 30 she had bought the masters to her first six albums after a years-long battle. The singer, 35, shared the news on Instagram, writing, "You belong with me," alongside photos with her albums Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989 and Reputation. A letter on her website detailed how she was able to retrieve the rights after trying for several years and even re-recording albums in the process in order to own her music. Brittany, who has accompanied Taylor to several Chiefs games and other star-studded events, reposted Taylor's announcement to her Instagram story on May 30, writing, "Just so amazing." The following year, he sold the label, including the rights to her music, allegedly without her knowledge to Shamrock Capital, whom Taylor now purchased the masters from. "All I've ever wanted was the opportunity to work hard enough to one day purchase my masters outright with no strings attached, no partnership, with full autonomy," she wrote in her letter to fans. "I will be forever grateful to everyone at Shamrock Capital for being the first people to ever offer this to me. The way they've handled every interaction we've had has been honest, fair, and respectful. Brooke says the press from the show has been amazing, but Taylor shuts down any thought that it means more than business. Katie (Heather Tom) tells Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) that what they share is magical, and the whole audience was reacting to him and Brooke on the runway. They were always meant to be together. Daphne (Murielle Hilaire) is sniffing fragrances and thinking about Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor). Zende (Delon De Metz) comes in and says she must be thinking about something good, knowing she was thinking about Carter. He knows she loves Carter. Hope (Annika Noelle) tells Carter that she loves him and she doesn't want him to ever doubt it. Daphne wants to know why Hope was allowed back at the company and can't understand why she was welcomed back after what she did. The company and Carter are better off without Hope. Hope can only imagine what Carter was thinking when he overheard what he heard. Carter says she can lean on him while she's going through this. Whatever she needs, he can take it. He hugs her. Katie gets a message about Brooke's magazine cover. Ridge looks at her on the cover, dressed in the showstopper, and he thinks back to the runway. He brushes it off. Katie knows he's committed to Taylor, but she wants him to be honest about missing Brooke. Taylor admits the show was a huge success for the whole company, and she says Brooke was a big part of that. Brooke says the moment she and Ridge shared on the runway caught everyone's attention. Taylor agrees, but she says it was just good for the company. It doesn't go beyond that. Katie says she can't imagine seeing Brooke in the Portofino gown didn't have an impact on him, but he says it's different because he's with Taylor. He wants to be a better man, so he wants his word to mean something. He's with Taylor and that's where he wants to be. Taylor admits that in the past, she would have been concerned or insecure, but Ridge is with her because he wants to be, and he's made his choice. Brooke asks if she thought their moment on the runway meant anything, and Taylor says it was a moment for the business. It won't change his love for her. Zende never imagined Daphne would get so attached, and she was surprised herself. She can't understand why Steffy would trust Hope, but she thinks Hope wants to be somewhere else. She's still convinced that Hope's future is with someone else and Daphne's future is with Carter. Hope suggests that they leave everything in the past and move forward. Carter agrees. Hope says they have a strong foundation, and they can build a future together. He vows to never let her down again. Later, Carter invites Daphne into his apartment, and she says she heard that Hope is back at Forrester. She knows he feels bad about Hope being punished and how he thought it wasn't fair, and she asks if the reason he's working from home is that there's tension between them. He admits he just saw Hope, leading Daphne to say he'll find love again. He says he has, and Daphne fully expects him to say it's her. Hope arrives at the design office and Brooke can see she's excited. But Hope can tell something is wrong with her mother. Brooke says Taylor told her she's confident in her relationship with Ridge. Ridge tells Katie that he hurt Taylor a lot in the past, and he'll always love Brooke, but he has to be true to her. Katie presses him and says he can fight all he wants, but he's just putting off the 'inevitable.' Katie moves to leave, and she runs into Taylor, who guesses (correctly) that Katie was trying to get Ridge to get back with Brooke. Daphne says that if someone told her that she'd be in LA feeling the way she feels about Carter, she'd think they were crazy. She's never felt that way about anyone. Falling for Carter was never part of the plan. Daphne says she needs to let herself go and take a leap of faith, and she has never felt vulnerable before. Carter says it can be scary because no one wants to get their heart broken, or be the one to break it. She reveals she's fallen in love with him, which is not what Carter was expecting to hear. He tells her it has been a very confusing time for him, but he's found love with Hope. He doesn't want to hurt her, but he's with Hope again. Brooke says she felt so much about her connection with Ridge on the runway. It felt so intimate despite being in the middle of an audience. She thought for sure it meant they would be together. Hope knows it has been difficult for her without Ridge. Brooke admits that Ridge has always been her heart, and she's always followed her heart. She has to believe that they will be together. Taylor isn't surprised that Katie would be there advocating for Brooke. The Logans are loyal, and Ridge agrees. Taylor says she saw Brooke to tell her how impressed she was with the runway, which created an unforgettable moment. It was an incredible day for the company, and she was a huge part of it. Ridge praises her for being a big enough person to admit that, but Taylor adds that she warned Brooke that it was just a moment. As she leans in for a kiss, she tells Ridge that this is their moment, and their chapter. But as he holds her, his expression reveals he's questioning everything.
