Amazon launches new service selling items for as low as £1 - but there's a catch

Daily Mirror07-05-2025

Initially released in the US late last year, Amazon's Haul section aims to rival competitors like Temu and Shein, with some items priced at £10 and some even as low as £1
Amazon has launched a brand new service on its website, which allows shoppers to access a never-ending array of ultra-low-prices products.
The online marketplace giant has recently unveiled its new "Haul" section for shoppers. The section - which offers customers thousands of products across fashion, home and lifestyle for £20 or less - is currently being trialled by a select group of Amazon customers. However, it is set to be rolled out to all customers "in the coming weeks".

Initially released in the US late last year, the Haul section aims to rival competitors like Temu and Shein, with some items priced at £10 and some even as low as £1. However, the only catch is that deliveries for this section will take much longer than Prime's next-day delivery offering, with parcels set to take up to two weeks to arrive.

For all you savvy savers and bargain hunters out there, there's a golden opportunity to stretch your pounds further. The Money Saving Club newsletter, a favourite among thousands who thrive on catching the best deals, is stepping up its game.
Simply follow the link and select one or more of the following topics to get all the latest deals and advice on: Travel; Property; Pets, family and home; Personal finance; Shopping and discounts; Utilities.
Amazon Haul offers free delivery on orders over £15, or a standard delivery charge of £2.99 on orders below £15.00. However, the service will also offer free delivery on all orders over £15, while shoppers can receive an extra 5% off their order when spending more than £50, and 10% off for orders over £75.
Haul is only available through the Amazon app, so you cannot access the section through its website. The section offers its own shopping experience with a separate search, basket, and checkout. If you already have the Amazon mobile app, search "Haul" and then hit "Enter" to be redirected.
Shoppers will also be able to see customers' reviews and star ratings to help them select products they would like to buy.

Alongside this, the online marketplace noted that all products on Haul go through all "relevant Amazon checks" so customers can be "confident they'll receive products that are safe and compliant with all applicable regulations and Amazon policies".

If shoppers want to return items bought on Haul, they can do so for free if requested within 15 days of buying. In the majority of cases, shoppers won't have to worry about boxes or labels, as their preferred drop-off location – including Post Offices, Asda, Morrisons and others – will handle the packing, labelling, and shipping.
Amazon UK country manager John Boumphrey said: 'We are constantly working to provide the best possible shopping experience for customers, and this is another way to offer low prices on a wide selection of products.
"Now more than ever we know our customers are looking to save, and we're excited to provide more options through the shopping app they already know and love.'

Retailer Temu's daily US users halve following end of 'de minimis' loophole

SHANGHAI/NEW YORK, June 2 (Reuters) - Daily U.S. users of PDD Holdings' (PDD.O), opens new tab global discount e-commerce platform Temu fell by 58% in May, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, one of many headwinds the e-retailer is facing amid a U.S.-China trade war. Temu decided to slash ad spending in the U.S. and shift its order fulfilment strategy after the White House on May 2 ended the practice known as "de minimis" - which allowed Chinese companies to ship low-value packages to the United States tariff-free. Temu, along with fast-fashion giant Shein, had utilised that provision for years to drop-ship items directly from suppliers in China to consumers in the U.S., keeping prices low. Both Temu and Shein have suffered a sharp drop in sales growth and customer growth rates since U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping trade tariffs, according to data collected by consultancy Bain & Company, but Temu's trends have been worse than its rival. Tariffs forced both platforms to raise prices, but Shein has been able to increase the amount of money spent per customer compared to a year ago, the data showed, while Temu has struggled. Temu did not respond to a request for comment on the drop in U.S. daily users or the headwinds it faces in the U.S. market. Engagement on Temu has dropped significantly following the end of the exemption, Morgan Stanley equity analyst Simeon Gutman said in a May note. "While the tariff environment is uncertain, if the status quo remains for an extended period, we believe Temu's competitive threat will continue to weaken," Gutman said. Last week, PDD's first quarter earnings fell short of growth estimates and executives told analysts on a post-earnings call that tariffs had created significant pressure for its merchants. They reiterated Temu's earlier pledge to keep prices stable and work with merchants across regions, referring to a shift to a local fulfilment model announced at the start of May. Temu's previous business model gave merchants responsibility for ordering and supplying their products while the China-based company managed most of the logistics, pricing and marketing. Now, Temu's merchants "can ship individual orders from China to Temu-partnered U.S. warehouses but they would need to address tariffs and customs charges and paper work," according to a note from analysts at HSBC. Temu continues to handle fulfilling orders close to shoppers, setting prices and online operations. In last week's note, HSBC said that Temu's growth in non-U.S. markets has picked up, with non-U.S. users rising to 90% of its 405 million global monthly active users in the second quarter. "New user uptick grew swiftest in less affluent markets," analysts wrote.

Black Friday TV deals UK 2025: what to expect this November

BLACK Friday officially kicks off at the end of November, and there'll be plenty of TV deals to choose from. During the shopping event, you'll see TVs on sale at all the major retailers, including Amazon, Currys, and John Lewis. 1 If there's any time to go hunting for a discounted TV, it's Black Friday. But with hundreds of sets on sale, the sheer choice can be overwhelming, and a TV is something you'll want to invest in wisely. Luckily, we're here to pick out the very best deals, be it a 32-inch set or an epic 75-inch cinematic screen. We suspect the biggest discounts will arrive on the big day itself, but that doesn't mean you can't save ahead of the Black Friday event. When is Black Friday 2025? Black Friday falls on November 28, 2025. As ever, it's the day after Thanksgiving - not something that counts much here in the UK, of course. Black Friday was originally an American invention, before gaining popularity in the UK in the last couple of decades. Now the sale period stretches out far longer, and you can expect to see deals throughout November. Are TV retailers taking part in Black Friday this year? Yes, without a doubt, many TV retailers will be launching Black Friday sales. Here's a list of stores offering the best Black Friday deals on TVs from top brands like LG, Samsung, and Sony. You'll find that these retailers often match each other's prices, with Amazon frequently undercutting its rivals by £1. What to expect from the TV Black Friday sale 2025 If you're thinking of buying a new television, Black Friday is a great time to get a top TV for less. You should find all sizes and price points covered in the sale, and we're confident you'll find a deal that's right for your needs, whether you've got your heart set on a top-of-the-line OLED or an entry-level 4K TV. Doing your research before buying ensures you'll end up with the best deal for you. What was in the TV sale last year? We found several fantastic TV deals during Black Friday 2024. As you can see below, some prices have risen since last year, some have fallen further, and some have stayed the same. 32-inch TV deals Fire TV 32-inch 2-Series HD smart TV, £179.99 (was £249.99) from Amazon - buy here TCL 32-inch Full HD Fire TV, £129 (was £179) from Very - buy here Hisense 32-inch Smart HD Ready LED TV, £149 (was £179) from Currys - buy here LG 32-inch LED HDR HD-Ready Smart TV, £169 (was £249) from Very - buy here Panasonic 32-inch LED HDR Full HD 1080p Smart TV with Freeview Play, £229 (was £279) from John Lewis - buy here 43-inch TV deals Sony Bravia 43-inch LED Smart TV 4K HDR, £498 (was £699) from Amazon - buy here Hisense 43-inch 4K HDR Smart TV, £229 (was £429) from Very - buy here Panasonic 43'' LED HDR 4K Ultra HD Smart Fire TV with Freely & Dolby Atmos, £499 (was £699.99) from John Lewis - buy here Samsung 43-inch Neo QLED 4K HDR Smart TV 2024, £799 (was £999) from Currys - buy here 50 to 55-inch TV deals LG 55-inch OLED evo 4K HDR Smart TV 2024, £1,199 (was £1,899) from Currys - buy here Hisense 50-inch 4K HDR, Smart TV, £279 (was £499) from Very - buy here Fire TV 55-inch Omni QLED series 4K UHD smart TV, £519.99 (was £749.99) from Amazon - buy here 65-inch TV deals 70 to 75-inch TV deals Sharp 70-inch UHD 4K TiVo Smart TV with Freely, £489 (was £649) from Very - buy here LG LED UR78 75" 4K Smart TV 2023, £725 (was £1,099) from Very - buy here Hisense 75-inch Entry QLED 4K HDR, Smart TV, £748 (was £1,399) from Very - buy here Samsung 2023 75-inch UHD HDR Smart TV, £749 (was £1,299) from Amazon - buy here When is Cyber Monday 2025 and are TV retailers taking part? This year, Cyber Monday lands on December 1, and several TV retailers are expected to participate. However, if you're after a particular TV bargain, it's better not to wait until Cyber Monday in the hope prices will drop further, as you may risk missing out. The best deals are usually available on Black Friday itself. How much does TV shipping cost? Delivery costs may vary depending on factors such as the size of the TV, the retailer it was purchased from, and the selected courier service. TV delivery costs generally range from £20 to £100 or more. However, during major sales events and seasonal promotions, some retailers may offer free shipping on select TV sets, so it's always worth keeping an eye out for extra perks. Do TV retailers offer any other discounts? Looking for additional discounts? It's a good idea to shop around. Major retailers like Amazon, Currys, and John Lewis hold frequent sales throughout the year. You can also take advantage of voucher codes and exclusive membership discounts. When do the Black Friday TV deals end? In theory, the big sale runs for four days, often referred to as 'Cyber Weekend'. It runs from Black Friday to the following Cyber Monday, but that's just on paper. In reality, the sale has morphed into a huge month-long retail event, starting much earlier and ending much later. The caveat here is not to let the grass grow under your feet, if there's a good deal, it'll only last as long as the stock does, and once it's gone, it's gone. So, you need to be smart about finding a great deal at the right time - either go for it early, if you find the TV you want, or gamble and wait it out to bag a deal right at the end. Either way, make sure you shop around and compare prices. When do TV Cyber Monday deals end? On Cyber Monday, deals are usually up for grabs until midnight. In recent years, some retailers and brands have extended their sales to cover the entire week. It's well worth having another look to check if you can spot any extra discounts for your last-minute shopping. What is a smart TV? A smart TV is a traditional-looking television that comes with built-in internet. Essentially, it lets you do some of the things you'd be able to do from your PC, but by using a remote control or a smartphone app, rather than a keyboard. The biggest selling point these days is the integration of streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and Paramount. You can also browse the web and access the likes of YouTube with just a click of a button. Which smart TV is best? By our estimates, Sky Glass is one of the best smart TVs on the market. You can find out more from our tech editor's Sky Glass review. Sky Glass is a 4K, QLED TV that doesn't need a satellite dish, and much like a regular smart TV, the Glass can connect directly to the internet and let you stream a wide variety of channels. Alongside Sky Glass, there's also Sky Q - a set-top box offering multiple services integrated with smart TV features and Ultra HD support. Major brands like LG, Samsung, and Sony also sell smart TVs, and during Black Friday, you can guarantee to see discounts on them. How much electricity does a TV use? The amount of electricity a TV consumes will depend on its size and energy rating. It's unlikely to be a surprise that the bigger the TV, the more electricity it will use. To get a rough idea of electricity use, look at the kWh/1000h number. This will show you how much it costs to run the TV for a year. 1,000 hours per year is equivalent to two- three hours a day or 19 hours a week. If you want to reduce your TV's energy consumption, we recommend setting the brightness control to automatic. It's also worth setting a sleep timer. That way, it will automatically power off if it hasn't been used for a few hours. Is Black Friday a good time to buy a TV? Tech products play a major role in Black Friday sales, and you'll often find enormous discounts on televisions. Late November is the perfect time to pick up a great TV for less than usual, and our advice is to hold off upgrading until then. That said, it's not the only time of year to bag a bargain. Amazon Prime Day (both in July and October) offers members access to decent TV deals. Should I wait until Black Friday to buy a TV? Definitely! Unless that is, you're in dire need of a new television because your existing TV has stopped working. Retailers save their best discounts until Black Friday rolls around, knowing that's when shoppers will be on the lookout for premium deals. Whether you're looking for a TV to watch over the festive season or you're on the hunt for a Christmas gift for the kids, you're going to get more bang for your buck shopping during the Black Friday sales. Should I buy a TV on Black Friday or wait for Cyber Monday? If you see an amazing TV deal on Black Friday, and one that's the right screen size and budget for you, we suggest you don't hang about until Cyber Monday. If it's a genuinely good price drop, it could easily sell out. On top of that, Cyber Monday isn't the standalone event that it was historically. Traditionally, it's a day of online-only deals, in contrast to the in-store aisle-dashing on Black Friday itself. However, these days, with online shopping booming, there's very little difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. You might find a final wave of TV deals on the latter day - but if we're being honest, it will likely be a last-gasp stock push from the retailers and we don't think it's worth banking on. How much can I save on a Black Friday TV deal? If you look at the Black Friday TV deals from previous years, you'll see big savings across a wide range of products. If you're buying a cheaper TV, you could still save around £180 on a set costing £369, right up to a huge saving of £1,200 on a more expensive £2,299 TV. That's why it is worth shopping around on Black Friday to get the very best deal for you. Are TVs really cheaper on Black Friday? You better believe it, of all the dates in the sales calendar, it's Black Friday where you'll see the best savings on TVs. That being said, there are so many price drops out there during Black Friday that it's important to separate the good ones from the mediocre ones. Luckily, we feature only the very best TV deals on this page, so be sure to bookmark it and keep returning to see all the latest offers. What kind of Black Friday TV deal should I buy? That depends on what you're looking for. There are high-end TVs with cutting-edge screens and exciting smart features, and if you buy top-of-the-range, you're likely to make big savings too. At the other end of the scale, you'll find savings on cheaper TVs, which are still fantastic to watch all your favourite programmes on, just without some of those extra features. The important thing is to have a strong idea of expectations and budget. Then, on Black Friday itself, compare all of the available deals before making a purchase. How to measure a TV When we talk about TV measurements, whether that's 32 inches, 43 inches, 50 inches, or bigger, we mean the size of the screen between the two diagonally opposite corners. It's an industry standard to measure the screen this way, and brands always list the diagonal screen size. If you want to know how large your TV is, or how much space you have for a TV, it's fairly easy to work out with a tape measure. Simply check the height and width, and don't forget about the depth, especially if you're planning to position your TV on a cabinet or shelf.
