Korea, Thailand resume EPA talks to boost trade ties
South Korea and Thailand are holding their fifth round of negotiations this week to finalize the Economic Partnership Agreement aimed at deepening bilateral trade and investment ties, Seoul's Trade Ministry said Tuesday.
Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said the talks will take place from Tuesday to Friday in Bangkok. The EPA is a form of trade pact similar to a free trade agreement, but it goes further by incorporating a broader cooperation framework in addition to tariff reduction and market liberalization.
Roh Keon-ki, deputy minister for trade negotiations at the Trade Ministry, is leading the Korean delegation, while his Thai counterpart, Chotima Iemsawasdikul, director general of the department of trade negotiations of the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand, will head the Thai delegation. About 90 representatives from both sides are taking part in the talks, Seoul's ministry said.
"The rapidly changing trade landscape, including US-led tariff actions, underscores the importance of bilateral agreements as a reliable safety net for Korean exports," Roh said. "We are committed to accelerating negotiations for a swift conclusion to the EPA with Thailand, a leading ASEAN (Southeast Asian) economy and a promising trade partner."
According to the ministry, the fifth round of talks will cover 13 key areas, such as goods, services, investment, intellectual property and sustainable development. Both sides aim to advance market access, harmonize trade rules and strengthen future-oriented cooperation, the ministry added.
Korea and Thailand first launched the EPA negotiations in March 2023. Since then, they have held four rounds of discussion to arrange a high-standard bilateral agreement that builds on existing regional frameworks, including the free trade agreement between Korea and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
During the Bangkok trip, Roh will also attend the Korea-Thailand RCEP Trade Forum and also host a roundtable meeting with major Korean companies operating in Thailand. Participants are expected to discuss improving the use of RCEP benefits and addressing challenges faced by local companies, including those related to US-led tariff measures, according to the ministry.
Over 100 Korean and Thai government officials and business representatives are expected to join the events, including Ekachat Seetavorarat, the deputy permanent commerce secretary. The business roundtable will include executives from key Korean firms in Thailand, including Hyundai Motor and Kia, Posco TCS, LG Electronics and Samsung Life Insurance.

If successful, Hanwha aims to expand joint projects in both the US and Australian defense markets while contributing to the long-term competitiveness of the global shipbuilding industry.

Naver builds digital twin platform for Saudi smart city project
Korean internet giant Naver said Tuesday that it has completed the construction of a large-scale digital twin platform for three major cities in Saudi Arabia -- Mecca, Medina and Jeddah -- as part of the Middle Eastern nation's smart city ambitions. A digital twin is a virtual replica of a real-world place that uses high-resolution 3D models to help plan and manage cities more effectively. The newly created platform spans about 6,800 square kilometers -- more than 11 times the size of Seoul -- and incorporates data on over 920,000 buildings. It combines ultra-high-resolution 3D imagery with real-time data streams, enabling urban planners, engineers and administrators in Saudi Arabia to optimize city management and development. The platform offers a range of analytical features based on 3D modeling, including terrain analysis for land grading and slope measurement, skyline and sunlight exposure analysis for landscape, and view assessments and simulations for natural disasters such as flooding. It also allows for real-time integration of building design data to verify compliance with local construction regulations. The project is spearheaded by Balady, Saudi Arabia's urban development authority, which plans to expand the digital twin platform to additional cities across the country. 'We will continue to enhance the platform in collaboration with local partners, broaden its geographical coverage and discover new use cases,' said Han Sang-young, leader of global DX and innovation at Naver. Naver secured the project from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing in October 2023, with full-scale development commencing in July last year. Last month, Naver Cloud and NHC Innovation -- the digital arm of Saudi Arabia's National Housing Company -- launched a joint venture called Naver Innovation. The new entity will lead projects including the development of a map-based super application and further expansion of digital twin-based services in the region.

Gwangju Uprising memorial sees spike in visitors: report
May visitors to May 18th National Cemetery reach highest figure since 2018 A total of 242,503 people in May visited the graves of those who participated in the Gwangju Democratic Uprising in 1980, according to local media reports on Tuesday. The monthly visitor count at the May 18th National Cemetery was the highest since 2018 and marked an on-year increase of over 40,000 from to May 2024, the Korean-language news agency News 1 said, citing the operators of the government facility under the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. The number of visitors usually peaks in May around the anniversary of the nationwide protest against Chun Doo-hwan's junta, which took power via a military coup in December 1979. The highest figures for any other month in 2025 and 2024 were 12,287 in April this year, and 11,202 in April last year. The number of May visitors had usually exceeded 300,000 prior to 2019 but hovered in the 200,000 range over the past three years, plummeting to 5,822 in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The political turmoil following former President Yoon Suk Yeol's imposition of martial law in December is thought to have renewed public interest in the historic citizens' protest against the military regime.
