CHENNAI: The first week of 134th IndianOil Durand Cup promises to be an exciting one with 10 matches slotted across five host cities Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Shillong, Kokrajhar and Imphal from July 23. This was shared by the organising committee of Saturday.
Top Indian Super League (ISL) teams Emami East Bengal FC (16-time former winners) and Jamshedpur FC (former ISL League Winners Shield winners) kick-off one after another on the first two match days, while at least three local derbies, featuring other top local contenders like Mohammedan Sporting (former champions), Shillong Lajong FC and Neroca FC (former finalists), are also likely to garner significant local interest. With teams like ISL champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant, defending champions NorthEast United FC and ISL side Punjab FC beginning in week two, early three points will give a fillip to the early starters looking to seal knockout berths.
The openers
The two games down in the plains before moving up to the beautiful hills of the North East, features giants East Bengal against Bengaluru League top division side South United FC in a tricky Group A opener, also the first game of the tournament, at home at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata.
That will be followed the next day by Jamshedpur taking on Nepal's Tribhuvan Army at their home at the JDR Tata Sports Complex in the Steel City. The Red Miners also play their second Group C game in week one, against the Malaysian Army outfit this time and nothing short of two wins will satisfy their growing fan base.
Likewise, now with a new line-up of foreign recruits in their camp, fans of the Red & Gold brigade will demand nothing less than a confident win in their opener.
The three derbies
The first derby of the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup, this year features a different kind of Kolkata derby, with the century-old Mohammedan Sporting taking on Calcutta Premier Division League rivals Diamond Harbour FC (DHFC), the I-League 2 champions. Mohammedan are looking for their first win over the newly formed and fast rising outfit, with DHFC winning one of the two matches played between them so far.
The second will see the ever-popular Shillong Lajong FC, take on another Shillong side Rangdaijed United, with both teams on the path to regain lost glory. The Shillong derby will be played at the JLN stadium as the opening game of Group E.
The final derby of week one will witness the famous Imphal derby between old rivals Neroca FC and TRAU FC as the Durand Cup makes a return to the capital of Manipur. It will sure be a treat to see the picturesque Khuman Lampak packed with football lovers once again.

Hmar questions AIFF's volte-face in its submission to CAS

The chairperson of the League Committee said he was 'thoroughly disappointed' that the AIFF made every attempt to undermine the importance of the League Committee in its submission to CAS Panaji: Chairperson of the All India Football Federation's League Committee and Mizoram sports minister, Lalnghinglova Hmar, has sought clarifications after being left 'confused and disappointed' at the federation's 'vacillating stands on the legal battle between a few I-League clubs,' involving the re-registration of Inter Kashi forward Mario Barco. It was the League Committee that allowed the re-registration of Barco after the AIFF's competitions department had turned down Inter Kashi. The Spanish forward was initially registered before the league kicked off, but suffered an injury in December, leading to his replacement by Matija Babovic. Two months later, Kashi re-registered Barco as a replacement for Juan Perez del Pino, who had mutually terminated his contract with the club. Three clubs – Churchill Brothers, Namdhari FC and Delhi FC – lodged a protest and later filed an appeal with the AIFF Appeals Committee, which they won. The ruling was, however, set aside by the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). 'I am afraid to say the AIFF failed to take a definite stand on the subject,' Hmar wrote in a letter to AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey on Wednesday. 'AIFF's vacillating stands on the legal battle between a few I-League clubs led to the unusual development of the I-League title being decided in the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland for the first time in Indian football history,' he added. Popularly known as Tetea, the man credited with transforming football in Mizoram said the way AIFF handled the entire issue threatened to dismantle the fabric and the long-standing tradition of India's domestic football. 'When the matter went to the AIFF appeal committee on April 30, 2025, the AIFF's submission stated that the Inter Kashi footballer was allowed to be re-registered by the League Committee, which has the necessary jurisdiction and constitutional authority to do so. Surprisingly, the AIFF did a complete volte-face in its submission to the CAS, in which it not only belittled its own league committee, but went on to explain at length that the league committee doesn't have the authority to allow the said footballer to play. 'The difference of opinion between the two submissions is so stark and glaring that it makes it hard to believe that they were made by the same party in less than three and a half months,' said Hmar, adding that it also gives rise to unnecessary suspicion that the AIFF's complete change of stance was driven by reasons that could hamper the neutrality of the national federation. The chairperson also put on record that he was 'thoroughly disappointed' that the AIFF made every attempt to undermine the importance of the League Committee in its submission to CAS. 'The league committee is one of the standing committees of the AIFF, constituted and approved by the executive committee. To say this committee 'lacked the authority to render any final and binding clarification or opinion' is absolutely shocking and is like an attempt to erode and sabotage its own authority. So much so, the AIFF secretariat didn't even bother to table the decision of the League Committee in the executive committee meeting for approval,' said Hmar. Inter Kashi were announced as champions after CAS overturned two decisions by the AIFF Appeals Committee, a first for Indian football.

ISL will take place this year, new India coach in 10 days: Kalyan Chaubey

The All India Football Federation President, Kalyan Chaubey, has assured that the Indian Super League (ISL), which has been put on hold, will take place this year. However, Chaubey didn't specify a start date for the top-tier competition. The AIFF President also said that a decision on the new India coach will be made in the next 10 days. The ISL organisers, FSDL on July 11 announced that it had put the 2025-26 season on hold due to the uncertainty surrounding the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) signed with the AIFF 15 years ago. The league normally runs from September to April and the current MRA between FSDL and the AIFF was until December this year. By this time, the 2025-26 season would have been in its third month. advertisementFollowing a directive from the Supreme Court, the AIFF was told not to negotiate new terms of the MRA with FSDL, until a final judgment is delivered in the AIFF draft constitution case. The Supreme Court is expected to make the judgement soon. Chaubey said that time will be of the essence and said the AIFF and all the stakeholders will make a call on the league once the Supreme Court verdict comes in. "As AIFF president, I assure you that the league will take place. But time is of the essence, there is international calendar, FIFA windows, home and away matches, so time is a factor," Chaubey told PTI at the sidelines of a press conference hosted by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)."If the league doesn't take place, it is not only footballers but the people who are associated with football will be affected. It's thousands of people who will be affected. So, we will put our best effort to ensure that the league happens.""I am not saying it (ISL) will be delayed, we don't know when the decision is coming. And so as and when it comes, definitely the AIFF will take a call, sit with all the stakeholders and ensure that how smoothly these tournaments, including ISL, can be conducted."Appointment of India coachChaubey said that the executive committee meeting will happen soon and thereafter, the announcement of the head coach will be made. "I think 10 days from now, if all goes smoothly."We will hold executive committee meeting and thereafter the name of the head coach will be announced," Chaubey AIFF announced on July 23 that Khalid Jamil, Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic were the candidates who were shortlisted for the role. - EndsMust Watch
