Canadian Captain Keaton Verhoeff Explains Decision To Leave WHL For NCAA

Yahooa day ago
The captain of Team Canada at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup is defenseman Keaton Verhoeff from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., who is projected by many sources to be the second overall pick of next summer's NHL Entry Draft behind Gavin McKenna.
'Whenever you get to wear the leaf on your chest, it's just as big of an honor, but when you have a 'C' on top of it too, it's an honor for me, my family, and even for the guys around me, I'm super honored to be leading them,' said Verhoeff.
Like McKenna, Verhoeff has made a decision that has only recently been available to Canadian Hockey League players – he's moving to the NCAA. It was a tough decision, however, as there's no existing blueprint for this path and no previous examples to follow.
He explained his decision to move from the Victoria Royals, the team that had the best record in the WHL's B.C. Division last year, for the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks, one of U.S. college hockey's perennial powerhouses.
'Victoria was an awesome experience,' Verhoeff began. 'A great place to play for the year. I learned so many things from the unbelievable coaching staff, my unbelievable teammates.'
Ryan Lin On Canada's D: 'It's Unreal; Any One Of Us Can Play With Anyone' Projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, Ryan Lin of the Vancouver Giants is one of several elite defensemen on the Canadian team at this year's Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
Verhoeff praised veteran defensemen Justin Kipkie, Nate Misskie and Cosmo Wilson and head coach James Patrick, a former NHL defenseman.
'I have nothing but good things to say about Victoria, but for me, to experience an opportunity to go to North Dakota to have a surrounding staff there that are so knowledgeable about everything, from nutrition, physical treatment, the weightlifting … It's all top-notch and professional. I think, for me, that was just too big of an opportunity to pass up.'
In all likelihood, Verhoeff will only be playing one season of college hockey.
'I'm trying not to focus too much on June but, obviously, it's going to pop into the back of your head a bit,' he admitted, noting that he wants to 'just take it day by day and focus on what I can control.'
Canada Edges Finland, Sweden Wins Big In Hlinka Gretzky Cup Openers Ethan Belchetz had three points and defensemen Keaton Verhoeff and Ryan Lin had two points each, leading Canada to a 5-3 opening-day victory over Finland at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup's Group A in Brno, Czechia.

Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon reportedly to buy Trail Blazers, keep team in Portland

Tom Dundon, owner of the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes, reportedly has reached an agreement to buy the Portland Trail Blazers from Paul Allen's estate at a valuation of more than $4 billion, a story broken by Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams of Sportico and confirmed by other reports. The new owners intend to keep the Trail Blazers in Portland, according to the reports. That ultimately will involve Dundon's group building a new arena in the area, something NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had said was part of the discussion involved with this sale. 'The city of Portland likely needs a new arena,' Silver said during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. 'So that will be part of the challenge for any new ownership group coming in.' Dundon not only owns the Hurricanes, but also is the majority owner of the Professional Pickleball Association and Major League Pickleball (he has invested heavily in that fast-growing sport). Dundon will head a group that also includes Marc Zahr, the co-president of Blue Owl Capital, and Portland-based Sheel Tyle, co-CEO of Collective Global, Sportico reports. The Trail Blazers were put up for sale in May, following the wishes of the late Paul Allen, who owned the team in a trust. His sister, Jody Allen, is the trustee and executor of his estate, and she moved more slowly toward this sale than many Trail Blazers fans would have preferred. All the proceeds from the sale of the Trail Blazers will be given to charities and other philanthropic endeavors, as Paul Allen had put in his trust. Before selling the team, Jody Allen made sure that general manager Joe Cronin and coach Chauncey Billups got contract extensions. On the court, the Trail Blazers are in the midst of a rebuild with some promising young players — Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, Deni Avdija, and just-drafted Chinese center Yang Hansen — and it just brought back franchise legend Damian Lillard (who will miss the coming season recovering from a torn Achilles).

NBA's Trail Blazers reach agreement to sell to NHL's Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon: Sources

Billionaire financier Tom Dundon and a group of investors have an agreement to buy the Portland Trail Blazers, multiple sources briefed on the deal confirmed. Dundon is also the owner of the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes. Sportico was the first to report the deal. The sale is not yet finalized. A spokesperson for the Allen family, which currently owns the franchise, declined to comment. The Blazers are a part of the Paul Allen Estate. Advertisement Allen, the wealthy Microsoft co-founder, left his properties in a trust when he died in 2018 with directions for them to be sold off slowly. Jody Allen, his sister, has run the team since then. The trust announced in May that it was selling the team and originally estimated that the process would go into the 2025-26 season. The NBA's board of governors must still approve the sale. This story will be updated. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle
