D-backs All-Star Ketel Marte apologizes for absence following All-Star break
That hasn't stopped a fair amount of criticism for the Arizona Diamondbacks slugger off of it.
The All-Star second baseman apologized through an interpreter Monday for missing three games following the All-Star break after flying back to his home in the Dominican Republic — a situation that has apparently been festering in the clubhouse over the past month.
The 31-year-old said he initially expected to return to Phoenix immediately following the break but was 'frustrated' and 'in a bad spot' after he learned his residence in Scottsdale, Arizona, had been burglarized during the break, according to the interpreter.
The D-backs were playing a crucial stretch of games — fighting for playoff position ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. Arizona placed Marte on the restricted list for the first two games of his absence and then didn't play a third game after he returned to the club.
'I know there's an elephant in the room and I'll just say what I want to say about it,' D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. 'I know that Ketel talked to you guys and I'm proud of him for doing that. That's not easy for him to do. I know he showed some vulnerability and I'm really proud of him for digging in the way that he did.'
The manager continued: 'What I'll say about Ketel are the things that I know — he's a great teammate, he's a great young man, he plays hard every single day for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He just wants to win baseball games. That's it.'
Marte has dealt with a torrent of criticism after a report in the Arizona Republic last week said that some teammates were frustrated with the second baseman's behavior over the past month and that his absence following the All-Star break might have partially caused the team's collapse prior to the trade deadline.
The D-backs came into the season with high expectations but currently have a 60-65 record.

Arizona actually won the three games Marte missed after the All-Star break — sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals — but then lost nine of 10 when he returned to the lineup.
That turned the organization into sellers at the trade deadline. They sent third baseman Eugenio Suárez and first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners in separate deals, outfielder Randal Grichuk to the Kansas City Royals and right-hander Merrill Kelly to the Texas Rangers.
Marte is having a terrific all-around offensive season, batting .297 with 23 homers and 56 RBIs. The three-time All-Star has been with the organization since 2017 and was a key piece to the team's unexpected run to the World Series in 2023.

Questions loom over rest of Browns quarterback room after Flacco named the Week 1 starter
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Kevin Stefanski resolved the biggest storyline of the Cleveland Browns training camp by naming Joe Flacco the starting quarterback on Monday. But as is the case with the quarterback position in Brownstown, naming a starter for the Week 1 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals set off a new round of questions. The one at the top of everyone's mind is how long Flacco thinks he can hang on to the job? Of the 10 quarterbacks who have started a game for the Browns since they traded Baker Mayfield in 2022, Flacco is tied for fifth with five starts in 2023, when he went 4-1 and directed Cleveland to its third playoff berth since returning to the league in 1999. 'Well, we all know how that works. I mean, that's everybody in the league, but it's not really my job to look at it in that way. It's just to go out there and play my game. Kind of like I've been doing all training camp and not worrying about all that stuff, just going out there, playing my game and being the best I can,' Flacco said Tuesday. 'I felt like I was having a good camp with the reps that I was given, and that's all you can do.' Flacco would also become the 11th different quarterback in league history to start a Week 1 game when they were at least 40 years old. Even though Flacco was the only Browns quarterback who has not missed time during training camp because of an injury, Stefanski said the decision went beyond what has transpired for the last month. 'I understand with the injuries, how that may look, that's really not the case here,' he said. 'Joe performed really well, both in practice, in the joint practices, in the meeting room, you name it. David Peterson dominates the Nationals and Mark Vientos homers again as the Mets win 8-1
WASHINGTON (AP) — David Peterson dominated the Nationals again, Mark Vientos homered for the second consecutive game and the New York Mets pounded Washington 8-1 on Tuesday night for their third straight victory. Peterson (8-5), who blanked the Nats on June 11 in New York for his first career shutout, extended his scoreless streak against Washington to 25 innings dating to last season. He finally allowed a run when Dylan Crews led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a double-play grounder. The only Mets starter who has reliably pitched deep into games, Peterson finished the eighth. He allowed four hits, struck out 10 and walked one. Juan Soto hit his 31st homer, Jeff McNeil homered and drove in three runs, and Brett Baty also went deep for the Mets, who may be breaking out of a funk that began in late July.
