3 killed and 9 missing after small boat capsizes off San Diego, Coast Guard says
Three people were killed, four were injured and nine others are missing after a small boat overturned early Monday in high surf off San Diego 's coast.
U.S. Coast Guard vessels and helicopters were searching for the missing while the four injured were sent to hospitals, authorities said. Coast Guard officials said they did not know where the 12-foot (3.6-meter) boat was coming from before it flipped.
Hikers and others at Torrey Pines State Beach reported seeing a boat capsize near the shore at about 6:30 a.m., said Lt. Nick Backouris of the San Diego Sheriff's Department.
'A doctor hiking nearby called in and said, 'I see people doing CPR on the beach, I'm running that way,'' Backouris said.
Pangas are open boats designed for fishing but commonly used by smugglers.
In 2023, eight people were killed when two migrant smuggling boats approached a San Diego beach amid heavy fog. One boat capsized in the surf, marking one of the deadliest human smuggling operations ever in the U.S.

In a statement released on Friday evening, the police said: 'We're currently at the scene of a serious incident in Totland. 'We were called at 7.21pm this evening after a car, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below.' Emergency services rushed to the scene and a winchman was lowered from the coastguard helicopter down to the bottom of the cliff. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance landed at Yarmouth where two ambulances, a critical care paramedic and Police had relocated awaiting the arrival of a casualty. Two coastguard teams responded and were stood down in the early hours of Saturday morning. The cliff sits near the world-famous Isle of Wight Needles, which is a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 30 metres above the water. Near the landmark is a small theme park with a viewing point and chairlift down to the beach, with views of The Needles. The attraction brings in thousands of visitors every year and is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. The Needles Landmark Attraction was closed by police yesterday while emergency teams attended the incident. Access to the beach, an observation tower and the Needles Old Battery fort were also restricted. Despite the incident, a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight, named The Round the Island Race, still went ahead yesterday. Yachts passed Alum Bay, where the car fell. The annual event is organised by the Island Sailing Club. The race attracts more than 1,200 boats and around 10,000 sailors a year. It is one of the largest yacht races in the world.

A man was hauled to shore and given CPR. On Sunday, police confirmed to Isle of Wight County Press that both victims have been pronounced dead. A spokesman said: 'Formal identification has yet to take place, but their next of kin have been notified. 'As part of the ongoing investigation into the incident, on behalf of the coroner, officers have been carrying out enquiries at an address on Arctic Road, Cowes.' Detectives were carrying out searches at an address in Cowes earlier on Sunday.

Captain charged after NYC boat explosion leaves 22 victims injured or swimming for their lives
A man was arrested after a boat exploded on the Long Island Sound in New York City, forcing more than 20 people to jump into the water. Officials say three people were injured and 19 others were forced to swim for their lives from the blaze after it took over the ship. The boat caught fire around 8:30pm on Saturday night while out on the Sound near City Island, in the Bronx, with first responders rushing to the scene. Images shared on social media shows thick plumes of smoke billowing from the vessel. Another clip shows the fire taking over the rear of the boat, with everyone onboard running for the front of the ship. Three people were pulled from the waters while the remainder managed to make their way to a nearby island where they waited to be taken back to shore by the Coast Guard. One person is in a critical condition, another serious and the third is stable, with the captain of the ship being charged with operating the vessel while intoxicated. Joshua Brito, 33, of the Bronx was hit with a DWI and reckless endangerment in relation to the incident, the NYPD said. Those injured onboard were all adults, with their ages ranging from 18 to 58, police said. Sources have told The New York Post that the inferno was started due to an explosion on board, but officials have yet to identify an official cause. One witness told the outlet: 'The only thing I saw was a bunch of smoke while walking down the block. It was very thick heavy black smoke.' New York City Fire Department Assistant Chief Michael Meyers said in a statement: 'Marine 4 gave a verbal for a boat fire and multiple people in the water to the Bronx dispatcher. 'At that point, the Bronx dispatcher had land units respond to come into City Island and begin to accept patients. 'Marine 4 grabbed three people out of the water. At that point, they transported them to one of the docks that was close by, where Engine 70 was waiting and EMS was waiting as well to begin CPR on the victims.' Meyers added: 'The other 19 folks swam to Hart Island. They were just off the east end of Hart Island, and then they were picked up by the NYPD Coast Guard and FDNY boats and transported back over to the docks at the Yacht Club on City Island. 'This just goes to show you what a coordinated effort happens between our marine units, our land units, and our EMS units to get here to help save lives, by responding in here, by communicating well, and by working with our City partners to help ensure that we protect the people of the City of New York.' The Coast Guard identified the ship as being a 44ft powerboat with an enclosed cabin. Brito's arraignment was pending in Bronx Criminal Court on Sunday.
