Andrews is optimistic about next season, particularly because of the signing of former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. "Jordan Henderson's come in and has been amazing around the place and the influence that he's having on the group and our younger players in particular," Andrews said. "Anthony Milambo (attacking midfielder signed from Feyenoord) was someone I was very keen on bringing in. He's a very talented young player. "At the top end of the pitch, two players spring to mind — Thiago and Fabio Carvalho. Both are so talented and have come through a really good pre-season. Tennis-ATP players handed record $18.3 million profit-sharing bonus
BENGALURU (Reuters) -Men's tennis players will pocket a record $18.3 million in profit-sharing bonuses from the 2024 season, the ATP said on Thursday, as the tour stepped up its efforts to forge a more sustainable and financially aligned future for the sport. The bonus amount, a 177% increase on the previous season's payout, will be distributed to players based on performance at the nine ATP 1000 tournaments, which rank just below the four Grand Slams in prestige. "This is exactly what profit sharing was designed to do: ensure that players and tournaments share equally in the sport's financial upside," ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said. "The $18.3 million is a huge milestone. For us, it's proof that strengthening the premium product and aligning interests creates value. "We're proud to be strengthening our partnership and building a stronger, more sustainable ATP Tour." The profit-sharing plan, introduced in 2022, splits profits generated at ATP Masters 1000 events – above onsite base prize money – equally between players and tournaments and is a cornerstone of the tour's OneVision strategic plan. Profit-sharing helped push ATP player compensation to a record $261 million for the 2024 season for a total of $378 million when combined with Grand Slam prize money. The men's elite body added that it was on track to deliver more compensation records, including $28.5 million in Challenger Tour prize money and a $3 million ATP 500 bonus pool. The expansion of most of the Masters events to 96-player draws had increased earning opportunities for players, widening the number of those able to make a sustainable living from the sport, the ATP added. It said there was a "wave of infrastructure investment" as Madrid, Rome, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris, among other venues, had upgraded facilities to enhance the experience for players and spectators. Rugby-Welsh club Nant Conwy boast two sets of sisters in Rugby World Cup squad
(Reuters) -North Wales team Nant Conwy are brimming with pride as two sets of the club's sisters prepare to represent the country at the Women's Rugby World Cup that kicks off next week in England. Nel and Branwen Metcalfe have been named alongside Gwenllian and Alaw Pyrs in Wales coach Sean Lynn's 32-player squad who open their campaign against Scotland on August 23 in Manchester. While the Pyrs sisters have played together before, it will be a new experience for the Metcalfes, with Wales Under-20s captain Branwen yet to earn her first senior cap. "I'm lost for words," Branwen told the BBC. "It's been a whirlwind year. I haven't trained much with the squad yet, but it's been really great coming into this environment, I'm learning a lot as I go. "Everyone is really nice and it's nice to come in as a young player with all these experienced players," she added, mentioning Alex Callender and Kate Williams among her role models on the team. Sister Nel said "the family is buzzing." "People have asked, 'How do you feel?'. I couldn't be prouder," Nel told the BBC. "I've seen how hard (Branwen) has worked, she deserves this. "I would say I do look out for her (in camp) and check she's ok, but she can handle herself, everyone has been pretty welcoming." While Wales has had siblings before with the Horgan twins Clair and Louise playing together against France in 2008, having two sets of sisters from the same grassroots club is something to celebrate, said Nant Conwy Chairman Marc Jones. "Congratulations to the girls, their achievements are down to their total dedication and commitment," he said. Wales conclude the group stage with games against Canada on August 30 and Fiji on September 6. The team's best World Cup finish was fourth in 1994.
