Motorcyclist charged after 'flying' across Toronto area at nearly 300 km/h: police
The 37-year-old man from Richmond Hill was captured on video by the York police air support unit last Friday morning, police said in a news release.
"He's flying," one officer said in the video.
Officers first alerted the air support unit after they noticed a black Yamaha motorcycle speeding northbound on Highway 404, police said in the release. Police said the man was then seen stealing gas from an Elgin Mills Road gas station and returning to the road.
He then continued southbound down the 404, then westbound on the 407, before finally arriving in Mississauga.
"The motorcyclist was observed lane splitting [and] weaving through traffic," the release said.
Once in Mississauga, he managed to enter a building's underground with the "aid of an accomplice," police said.
Police said he left his motorcycle and attempted to evade police by leaving in a rideshare – but was caught and arrested as he arrived home.
"Judging by his driving behaviour, this isn't his first time," said Const. Lisa Moskaluk, spokesperson for York Regional Police. "It's a miracle he did not crash."
The charges include stunt driving, use of a plate not authorized for vehicle, speeding, theft under $5,000 and driving without insurance.

LONDON, Ontario (AP) — A lawyer for one of five former world junior hockey players acquitted of sexual assault charges last month says the Canadian government will not appeal the judge's ruling. Daniel Brown, who represents Alex Formenton, said in an email Thursday he had been informed of that decision. Formenton, Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote were all acquitted of sexual assault. McLeod was also acquitted of a separate charge of being a party to the offense of sexual assault. The defense deemed the ruling a 'resounding vindication,' while the complainant's lawyer called it devastating. Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia found the complainant's testimony was not credible or reliable and that there were 'troubling aspects' in how she delivered some of her evidence about the 2018 encounter. The judge said the complainant tended to blame others for inconsistencies in her narrative and exaggerated her level of intoxication that night. The NHL said at the time of the ruling the players — none of whom is currently on an NHL roster or has an active contract — remained ineligible to play in the league while it reviews the judge's findings, adding in a statement that the allegations in the case were disturbing, even if not determined to be criminal.
