Nearly half of MSMEs polled prefer UPI for business transactions, says report

Mumbai, Jul 5 (PTI) Nearly half of MSMEs surveyed prefer UPI as a mode of transaction to grow their business, followed by Aadhaar-enabled banking, says a report.
According to the MSME Digital Index Report by PayNearby, digital payments continue to gain strong acceptance among MSMEs, with UPI emerging as the most preferred mode of transaction at 48 per cent, followed by Aadhaar-enabled banking at 39 per cent.
Among women entrepreneurs, Aadhaar banking saw even higher preference at 42 per cent, reflecting increasing trust in secure, tech-enabled services such as fingerprint and face authentication, the report said.
The report is based a nationwide survey conducted among 10,000 individuals and MSMEs in retail-focused segments such as kirana stores, mobile recharge outlets, medical shops, customer service points (CSPs), and travel agencies.
It found that smartphones have emerged as primary business device at 71 per cent while among women, it is even higher at 84 per cent.
On benefits from digital adoption, a third of respondents cited improved operational efficiency, while over 73 per cent of small businesses across semi-urban and rural India have seen increased income or improved operational efficiency as a result of adopting digital tools.
"A small but notable 7 per cent of respondents have begun exploring automated or AI-powered tools, including inventory apps, automated billing systems, and customer engagement platforms, mostly through third-party solutions," the report said.

There was also a suggestion for Cuba to recognise the Indian pharmacopoeia, which will benefit in terms of giving access to India's generic medicines to the Cuban national healthcare system. So these are broadly the discussions that happened in the bilaterals,' he said. He added that Prime Minister Modi also had pull-asides with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Prime Minister of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh. 'In addition, the Prime Minister also had pull-asides with President Ramaphosa of South Africa and the Prime Minister of Vietnam. So broadly, these are today's highlights,' he said. (ANI)

The Department of Posts is working on a plan to turn its nationwide network of 1.6 lakh post offices into a profit-generating system by monetising its land assets and developing new business verticals, said Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told ToI in an interview. The minister said the department is identifying prime real estate it owns across the country and preparing to lease out commercially viable parts while continuing postal operations. He also said the government is looking to redesign the department's operations and introduce new services to make it financially sustainable over the next five years. Post Office's prime land to be monetised 'Whether it's telecom or department of posts, we must sweat our assets. Therefore, if you have a large piece of land, you can have the post office on the ground and build the whole building and lease out space,' Scindia said. Each vertical will operate as a separate business unit with its own profit and loss statement. Scindia said, 'We have undertaken a business process reengineering and converted the department into six verticals and four horizontals... We are looking at six strategic business units with profit and loss for each of them.' Live Events To support the digital upgrade, a chief technology officer and deputy CTOs have been appointed. The minister expects the organisation to become a full-fledged logistics platform using its vast reach across the country. Cost still exceeds revenue India Post currently incurs expenses of around ₹27,000 crore while generating revenue of about ₹12,000 crore. The government expects the gap to reduce gradually through service expansion, technology upgrades, and monetisation of assets. 'We are working on IT 2.0... The restructuring and capex by govt will hopefully turn it into a profit centre in five years,' Scindia said. Expanding into new services The postal department is partnering with government agencies and private players to offer new services such as Aadhaar enrolment, passport facilitation, and mutual fund distribution. It is also introducing express parcel delivery and new mail products to improve efficiency and relevance. 'No one has the breadth and depth of India Post, even internationally. The point is how much can you push through this pipe and increase different products,' Scindia said. Government investing in the North-East Scindia also highlighted development in the North-East, calling it a major focus for the central government. He said ₹5 lakh crore is being invested in infrastructure, and private firms have pledged ₹4.2 lakh crore in commitments at the North-East Investment Summit. He noted that the Prime Minister has personally visited the region more than 70 times in the past 11 years. India's 5G coverage reaches 99.6% of districts On the telecom front, the minister said India has achieved the world's fastest 5G rollout, now covering 99.6% of districts and 82% of the population. BSNL has installed 94,500 towers and is planning to lead the global 6G rollout. Scindia also confirmed that BSNL turned profitable after 18 years, with quarterly profits in December and March, and a 55% reduction in annual losses.

Siemens Energy India March qtr net profit grows 36 pc to ₹246 cr

New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) Siemens Energy India Ltd (SEIL) on Monday posted 36.34 per cent rise in net profit at ₹ 246.1 crore for January-March 2025, mainly driven by income from power transmission and generation segment. It had reported ₹ 180.5 crore profit for the second quarter a year ago. The company follows October to September as financial year. In March quarter, the company reported a total income of ₹ 1,893.9 crore, up from ₹ 1,196.8 crore in the year-ago period. Revenues from transmission rose to ₹ 1,013.8 crore from ₹ 604.9 crore in January-March 2024. Revenue from generation grew to ₹ 865.7 crore from ₹ 591.7 crore. Expenses also shot up to ₹ 1,548.6 crore from ₹ 952.4 crore on account of increased cost of materials consumed and project bought outs and other direct costs. The company's profit in October-March more than doubled to ₹ 477.8 crore from ₹ 180.5 crore earlier. SEIL is an energy technology company. Shares of the company got listed on the stock exchanges on June 19 after the demerger of energy business of Siemens Ltd. "With this listing, we reaffirm our long-standing commitment to India's energy future. As India advances toward becoming a USD 7 trillion economy, a strong and resilient energy system will be essential. SEIL, with its dedicated team, is ready to support this important journey for India and its people," company's MD and CEO Guilherme Mendonca said. In December 2023, Siemens Ltd said its board has approved the demerger of its energy business into a separate entity.
