Special court raps Lokayukta cops, orders re-probe against ex-minister Gopalaiah, excise officials in Karnataka
BENGALURU: The special court to try criminal cases against sitting and former MPs/MLAs set aside the closure report filed by the Lokayukta police in a case involving former excise minister K Gopalaiah and other officials. They had allegedly committed violations while granting permission to KN Resources Pvt Ltd to export 2 lakh metric tonnes of molasses from 2021 to 2023. The court directed the Lokayukta police to investigate the case in accordance with law and submit the report within three months.
Besides Gopalaiah, the court directed the probe against then excise commissioner J Ravishankar, then Undersecretary to the Finance Department Manjula Nataraj, then secretary to the Finance Department Dr Ekroop Kaur and then additional chief secretary of Finance Department ISN Prasad.
The court said the statements of Ravishankar, Kaur and Prasad recorded by the investigation officer clearly indicated that some permits were also issued in the past deviating from the mandatory M2 license. The authorities are bound to explain why such irregularities are being continued, and the illegality cannot be perpetuated, it said.
'The closure report indicates that no loss has been caused to the government exchequer. However, on careful appreciation of the materials, it is noticed that a sum of Rs 458 per MT was required to be paid towards export, and the approximate loss, which is calculated by the complainant, is Rs 9.16 crore. However, without adhering to the basic principles, the impugned act was committed,' the court observed, pointing to a series of lapses in the probe.
'Considering the entire records and also by looking into the materials available on record, it would clearly indicate that the investigation conducted by the Karnataka Lokayukta is not in accordance with the law,' said Special Court Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat.

Delhi govt to clear pending applications for pensions
New Delhi: With nearly 80,000 applications from senior citizens awaiting approval under the govt's monthly pension scheme, social welfare minister Ravindra Indraj Singh has directed the department to clear all pending applications within 15 days. The aim is to ensure that only eligible individuals continue to receive financial assistance. According to officials, the department had invited applications in Dec 2024 from senior citizens eligible for the pension scheme. Although the scheme has a cap of 5.3 lakh beneficiaries aged 60 and above, only 4.3 lakh are currently registered. The online portal for registration was closed once the number of applicants reached 80,000. Applicants were also required to obtain a recommendation from their area legislator at the time of applying. More than five months have passed since the applications were received, yet the department has not completed the verification process. "Each form needs to be thoroughly checked to ensure the applicant meets the eligibility criteria. The minister has issued strict instructions to expedite the process and ensure eligible applicants start receiving their pensions immediately," said an official. "This process will also help determine how many slots are still available. At the same time, a physical verification drive will begin soon to weed out ineligible beneficiaries, making room for more deserving applicants," the official added. The agency tasked with the verification will be paid Rs 100 per beneficiary. A mobile application, integrated with the e-district portal, will be developed to enable seamless data collection during the verification process. Under the scheme, those aged between 60 and 69 years receive Rs 2,000 per month, while those 70 and above are entitled to Rs 2,500. Sources said the Delhi govt spends over Rs 1,200 crore annually on the old-age pension scheme for eligible senior citizens.

Preliminary work begins at KRS dam despite opposition

If this continues, we will be forced to protest in front of the dam. We don't need a project that puts the safety of the dam and the environment at risk. Mailara Mahadevappa's Gram Sevashrama renovated, reopened
Haveri: Freedom fighter Mailara Mahadevappa founded the Grama Sevashrama in Koraduru village to promote Mahatma Gandhi 's ideals of poverty eradication, abolishing untouchability and indigenous awareness, while contributing to the freedom movement, said Vijay Mahantesh Danammanavar, deputy commissioner and chairman of the Martyr Mailara Mahadevappa National Memorial Trust. Inaugurating the renovated Grama Sevashrama on Monday, he detailed how Mailara Mahadevappa, resolute in his opposition to British rule, established the Koraduru Ashram, which inspired over 200 activists locally. Freedom fighter Kariyappa Kalkoti enhanced it, though it recently fell into disrepair. "Being familiar with this area since his youth, he undertook the ashram's renovation," he added. The DC said beyond renovating the ashram, people should comprehend Mahadevappa's principles and emulate his valiant character to pass this heritage to future generations.
