Wedding turns tragic: Gunmen open fire at wedding in France; bride killed, 3 injured

Time of India3 hours ago

A wedding celebration turned into a scene of horror when masked gunmen attacked a wedding party in the early hours of Sunday in the small village of Goult, southeastern France, killing a 27-year-old bride and injuring three others, including a 13-year-old child.
The attack occurred around 4:30am local time as the bride and groom were leaving the village hall. According to authorities, the couple were ambushed by several armed assailants, one of whom also died during the violence — reportedly hit "in return", though earlier accounts suggest he may have been run over by the couple's car while trying to flee.
The groom, 25, and the child remain seriously injured. Another adult also sustained injuries.
A total of 28 people had been attending the wedding celebration when the shooting unfolded.
Avignon prosecutor Florence Galtier confirmed that the attackers, armed with multiple weapons, arrived by car and escaped on foot. The authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into murder and attempted murder by an organised gang. Early leads suggest a potential link to drug-related score-settling.
Several police vehicles sealed off the area on Sunday morning, and a helicopter was deployed to assist in the search for the remaining gunmen.

The incident has stunned the peaceful hilltop village, which is known for its postcard charm and rarely sees violent crime.
"I'm angry. I'm outraged," said Goult's mayor, Didier Perello. 'I'm ruling nothing out. Absolutely nothing,' he added, suggesting the possibility of criminal rivalries spilling over from nearby towns. 'Unfortunately, we've already seen this kind of thing before.'
The couple, who reportedly rented the village hall back in March, were not residents of the commune.
Locals fear the shooting could permanently mar the village's image. "The last major incident in the village was 125 years ago," said Guillaume Molinas, a local restaurant owner.
The French government has recently pledged to ramp up its crackdown on narcotics and gang violence, amid growing concern over the rise in drug-related incidents across the country.

Man sentenced for 'rape' with minor wife acquitted

Bhopal: A division bench of the MP High Court acquitted a person sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment by a POCSO court on charges of 'raping' his wife when she was a minor. Holding marriage with a minor as illegal and a physical relationship with the girl as rape, the trial court sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. Hearing his appeal, the division bench of the MP High Court, however, held that the girl was an adult and set aside the trial court order. The petition filed by the accused, belonging to Khandwa town of MP, said that he had a relationship with the girl in question and they eloped on May 18, 2020. They got married in a temple. The girl's father lodged a report about his missing daughter with the police. When the police recovered the girl, she was pregnant. During the trial against him in the POCSO court, the girl told the court that she was 20 years of age. She further said that her father demanded Rs 5 lakh from her husband to drop the complaint against him, and when he couldn't meet the demand, he lodged a police complaint against him. She further said in the court that she studied up to class V at a school and her age was ascertained from school records. The bench of Justice Vivek Agarwal and Justice Dev Narayan Mishra, after hearing arguments from both sides, said that the father of the girl stated in court that he was 59 years of age and he got married at the age of 22 years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo His elder sister was born 4 years after the marriage, and the girl in question was born 8 years after the marriage. She was admitted to school without showing a birth certificate, and her date of birth was registered as November 26, 2004. There is no documentary proof to this effect, and the girl says that she is an adult. In this situation, holding the petitioner guilty of rape because the girl was a minor at the time of marriage was not appropriate. With this, the court set aside the trial court order and acquitted the accused.

After arrest of Uzbek women, cops conduct raids to nab surgeon, scribe

Lucknow: A day after two Uzbek women were found living illegally in a flat in Golf City who revealed that they had undergone facial plastic surgery to hide their identities, police have intensified probe into the suspected trafficking and sex racket involving foreign nationals, a cosmetic surgeon and a man posing as a journalist. Senior officers said that raids were conducted at multiple locations to trace the surgeon and the journalist, identified as Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana — two key suspects named in the FIR. While the surgeon allegedly performed multiple facial surgeries on the women to give them a "Russian look", Thrijin is accused of sheltering foreign nationals and running illegal spas in residential flats. "The two women are still under FRRO surveillance and have confirmed their identities. We have obtained leads on the flats operated by Thrijin Raj and the financial trail involved," said DCP (south zone) Nipun Agarwal. Employess at the surgeon's clinic in Ahimamau informed the police the doctor was on an extended leave. Meanwhile, Thrijin's apartment remains locked. Investigators suspect the two may have fled the city after the case came to light. According to sources, the two accused, along with a woman Lola Kayumova, allegedly facilitated the stay of several undocumented foreign women in Lucknow, primarily in rented flats and farmhouses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Godrej Majesty | Luxurious 3 & 4 BHK Homes at ₹2.39 Cr* Godrej Majesty Learn More Undo The women were reportedly sent to work in high-end spa centres without the mandatory Form-C registration with FRRO. Police have now zeroed in on two flats, allegedly leased by Thrijin using proceeds from the racket. "These flats were being used as illegal massage parlors where services were reportedly offered for rates ranging between Rs 3,200 and Rs 10,000," an officer involved in the investigation said. Officials are also in touch with agencies in NCR and other metro cities where similar rackets involving undocumented foreign nationals have been reported. "We are looking into financial links, travel histories, and past police complaints involving the accused," the DCP said. Police said that once the investigation concludes, the foreign nationals found staying without valid documentation would be deported.

Road rage: Sub inspector booked for thrashing armyman

Lucknow: An Army officer accused a sub inspector of physically assaulting him and attempting to run him over with a vehicle following a road rage incident at Telibagh crossing on Saturday morning. An FIR was registered on Sunday against the unidentified police personnel. Lt Col Anand Prakash Suman, currently posted with the NCC Directorate in Patna, filed a complaint at PGI police station alleging that around 9.40 am, while travelling with his family in his car, he took a turn towards PGI Road when another car — allegedly driven by a police sub-inspector — approached from the wrong direction, forcing him to apply brake suddenly. This caused an auto-rickshaw to rear-end his vehicle. According to Col Suman, when he questioned the driver for coming from the wrong direction, the S-I began hurling abuses. "As I rolled down my window to speak, he slapped me without provocation," Col Suman stated in his complaint. When he tried to stop the officer's car from fleeing, the sub inspector allegedly drove over his left foot with the vehicle and sped away. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Install the Perfect Pool at Home – Start Here Backyard Pool | Search Ads Learn More Undo The officer, who hails from Bilgram in Hardoi district, demanded strict action, saying, "This is not just an attack on an individual but an affront to the dignity of the armed forces." He urged the police to review CCTV footage and ensure justice so that "armed forces personnel — whether officers or jawans — are not victimised by police high-handedness." DCP South Zone, Nipun Agarwal, confirmed that a case was registered.
