Lucid Dreaming Isn't Sleep or Wakefulness—It's a New State of Consciousness, Scientists Find

After analyzing many previous studies on lucid dreaming, researchers have defined it as a state that differs significantly from both REM sleep and wakefulness.
The awareness of dreaming during a lucid dream is now thought to come from shifts in brain wave activity undergone by several parts of the brain, including the right central lobe, parietal lobe and precuneus.
Lucid dreams were also found to have effects similar to psychedelics like LSD.

When you become conscious of the fact that you are dreaming, you can take advantage of that knowledge and manipulate the dream. If you want to do something that is physically impossible in the real world, such as flying, you can leap into the air and take flight. Someone who realizes they are trapped in a nightmare can convince themselves to wake up.
The state known as lucid dreaming is an unquestionably surreal one, and it just got even more so. A team of researchers—led by Çağatay Demirel from the Donders Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University Medical Center, the Netherlands—has discovered that lucid dreaming has now been found to be a state of consciousness separate from both wakefulness and REM sleep (the state usually associated with dreams), and is in fact associated with its own unique type of brain activity. They published a study on their findings in the Journal of Neuroscience.
'This research opens the door to a deeper understanding of lucid dreaming as an intricate state of consciousness by pointing to the possibility that conscious experience can arise from within sleep itself,' Demirel said in a press release.
To identify what sets lucid dreaming apart from the rest of sleep, he and his team pulled previous studies—in which brain activity was measured with EEG sensors—together into what is now the most extensive dataset in this field of sleep research. The researchers then compared brain activity patterns for wakefulness, REM sleep, and lucid dreaming to find that that the eerie self-awareness experienced in lucid dreams has a connection to the electrical rhythms in neurons known as brain waves.
Perception and memory processing in the lucid dreaming state were found to be different from non-lucid REM sleep. The consciousness of existing in a dream was associated with with beta waves in the right central lobe (which controls spatial awareness and nonverbal memory) and parietal lobe (which controls the sense of touch and spatial awareness). Beta waves are a type of high-frequency electromagnetic activity in the brain involved in conscious thought processes like solving problems or making decisions. Our consciousness is dominated by beta waves when we are awake.
This might explain why there is so much cognitive control in lucid dreams. Dreamers deep in REM sleep have no sense of control over factors like thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, but those in lucid dreaming states do.
Demirel also linked gamma waves with lucid dreaming. These are the fastest brain waves, which become visible on an EEG at times when the brain is especially alert and focusing on something. When lucid dreaming begins, gamma waves increase in the right precuneus, which is involved in self-referential thinking—thoughts about ourselves and our lives. When we are awake, we often drift into this type of thinking when our minds wander.
Maybe the most mind-bending thing about lucid dreams is that they are, according to the study, similar in the brain to the effects of psychedelic drugs such as LSD and ayahuasca. These types of psychedelic experiences are also associated with the precuneus, whose activity is modified when waking imagery is seen despite having closed eyes (something usually only experienced with psychedelics). Interestingly, however, lucid dreams may even go a few experiential steps past psychedelics. 'While psychedelics often lead to a dissolution of ego and decreased self-referential processing […] lucid dreams may actually harness elements of self-awareness and control,' Demirel and his team said in the study.
So if you're capable of lucid dreaming, you're in for an awesome trip.

By contrast, Schedule 3 drugs are define as those with "moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence" and include ketamine, anabolic steroids and testosterone. During the final year of the Biden administration, the Drug Enforcement Administration said it supported recommending the reclassification of marijuana. tax benefits to the cannabis industry. Trump on Monday said he's heard good and bad things regarding the drug. "I've heard great things having to do with medical, and I've had bad things having to do with just about everything else. But medical, and, you know, for pain and various things," Trump said. "Some people like it, some people hate it," the president said.

Should marijuana be rescheduled?

For more than 50 years, dozens of 'controlled substances,' including various pharmaceutical products as well as marijuana, cocaine, heroin and everything in between, have been shoe-horned into five statutory 'Schedules,' according to various criteria set in federal law. While some of these categorizations make sense, others do not. Marijuana (technically, tetrahydrocannabinols or THC, which is the operative chemical in the marijuana plant) falls into the latter category — and perhaps it's time to revisit this aspect of the 'Controlled Substance Schedules.' THC is currently classified at the highest level, that is, as a Schedule I controlled substance — on par with heroin and LSD and having ' no currently accepted medical use.' Even those of us who don't think recreational marijuana use is a good idea can agree that the current scheduling is absurd and erodes institutional trust. Frankly, it is time to reschedule cannabis to where it belongs — Schedule III — which will still limit its availability but also will allow for expanded medical research into therapeutic uses of the drug and restore common sense to federal drug policy. Most people surely recognize that cannabis — whatever they think its legal status should be — is a far cry from heroin and does not belong in the same enforcement category. In contrast, even cocaine is less restricted, categorized as Schedule II. As someone who cares about the rule of law, I know how insidious it is to maintain such clearly nonsensical regulations. It undermines the broader credibility of federal drug scheduling. This anomaly is compounded by the reality that a large majority of states — 40 states, three territories, and the District of Columbia — currently recognize medical uses for cannabis. In other words, most states now contradict the federal position that there is 'no accepted medical use' for cannabis. This tension can be largely resolved without going so far as to legalize recreational use on the federal level. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration defines Schedule III drugs as having a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence. Schedule III currently includes anabolic steroids, testosterone and ketamine, to name a few. Cannabis would fit far more sensibly in that list. Rescheduling cannabis is not merely a bureaucratic reshuffling. Its Schedule I status creates major barriers for researchers and doctors wishing to study potential therapeutic uses. Further, it creates burdensome red tape that slows scientific progress. It demonstrably is not the case that no medical value can be had from marijuana. It has been used effectively to help patients with epilepsy, chronic pain, PTSD and chemotherapy-induced nausea. The notion that there is no known medical use for cannabis and cannabis-derived medication is clearly outdated. As a conservative, I have always believed that cutting regulatory red tape spurs economic growth. This would be the case for rescheduling cannabis; a straightforward change would support more than 440,000 existing jobs and open the door to future growth. It would lead to more American jobs in research and medicine, generating therapeutic breakthroughs and boosting the economy. If the Trump administration moves forward with cannabis rescheduling, it is critical that they do it the right way. I've spent enough time in Washington to know that stuffing such a change into an omnibus spending bill is not the answer. Nor is an executive order the right vehicle for this policy shift, since rescheduling could easily be undone by a future administration. Instead, the federal government should reschedule cannabis via the official rulemaking process, which would involve the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of Justice in coordination with the White House and other executive branch stakeholders. Taking an objective view of the current cannabis policy landscape, it is clear that both scientific and cultural attitudes about marijuana have progressed dramatically in recent years. It is time for the federal government to catch up. Rescheduling marijuana to a Schedule III controlled substance is a substantive but nuanced way to do so without legalizing the drug wholesale. Ultimately, cannabis is a drug that can have genuine medical benefits and its therapeutic uses warrant further research. Rescheduling marijuana to a more sensible classification will unlock new research, new jobs and help restore credibility to federal drug laws. Does sleeping on a problem really work?

The busy box that is your brain is hard at work all day long—and it doesn't quit when you're asleep. Not only does your brain fill your slumber with dreams, it also goes right on solving the problems that plagued you during the day, often coming up with solutions by the time you wake up. The idea of sleeping on a problem and seeing if you can get some clarity in the morning is a common one, but is it scientifically sound? A growing body of research says yes. The latest piece of evidence that sleeping on a problem actually works comes courtesy of a small study recently published in the Journal of Neuroscience. A group of 25 people did a memorization task while wired up to an electroencephalograph (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) so the researchers could monitor which portions of their brains lit up as they worked. Everyone then took an afternoon nap, with brain sensors still in place. The researchers were looking for sleep spindles: bursts of activity that occur in the brain during a relatively light stage of sleep. The location of the spindles can provide a clue as to what kind of information the brain is consolidating and processing at any particular time. Spindle activity was especially high in the same areas of the brain that were used in the memorization task, and the greater the activity, the more people improved at the task when they tried it after the nap. 'Brain rhythms occur everywhere in the brain during sleep,' said Dara Manoach, professor of psychiatry at Harvard University Medical School and a coauthor of the study, in a statement that accompanied its release. 'But the rhythms in these regions increase after learning, presumably to stabilize and enhance memory.' Alyssa Sinclair, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, found something similar in a study published last year. After sleeping on a difficult task, people were more level-headed the next day. 'When we waited, when we let them sleep on it, they made somewhat more rational choices,' she says. 'They were no longer quite as drawn to evaluating events based solely on their first impressions.' This more measured take on things is due in large part to the region of the brain known as the hippocampus, which is responsible for processing short-term memories and, during sleep, for helping to determine which of those memories will be transferred to long-term storage and which will essentially be deleted. 'When we're asleep,' says Sinclair, 'the hippocampus is hard at work, consolidating those memories and experiences from throughout the day. It does this by replaying things that were important and pruning away the things that weren't.' Once it is done choosing the most relevant experiences, it transfers the keepers to the neocortex, where long-term memories are stored and integrated with existing memories. Those two brain regions do more than just file or trash information. They also analyze it—turning it this way and that and making connections that may not have been entirely obvious when we first encountered the information. It's during sleep that this process often takes place. 'Sleep is critical for problem-solving, creativity, and emotional regulation,' says Daniela Grimaldi, a research associate professor at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. 'Deep sleep, also called slow-wave sleep…provides the optimal conditions for this memory transfer to occur efficiently, ensuring that important experiences and learning are preserved, while less critical information is filtered out.' 'Your mind engages in informational alchemy,' says Matthew Walker, professor of neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley, and the author of the book Why We Sleep, 'reassembling memory fragments into a novel set of associations and colliding them with the back-catalogue of stored information.' Deep sleep is not the only phase that plays a role in problem-solving and memory consolidation. The lightest of the four phases of sleep, known as N1 (for non-rapid eye movement stage one), can also yield profound cognitive benefits. One 2023 study in Science Advances found that when people were presented with a complex math problem, they tripled their chances of solving it if they spent as little as 15 seconds in N1 sleep after being exposed to the problem. 'Our findings suggest that there is a creative sweet spot within the sleep-onset period,' the researchers wrote, 'and hitting it requires individuals balancing falling asleep easily against falling asleep too deeply.' The cognitive muscle work of creativity—of art and scientific research and philosophical insight—is all conducted by wide-awake thinkers. But when the lights go off and consciousness winks out, another, deeper process goes to work. 'Creative problem solving improves after a period of sleep,' says Sinclair, 'which helps us piece together those threads of what we've been thinking about, filter out irrelevant information, and come to a better conclusion when we wake up the next day.' It's possible to improve our chances of benefitting from all of that nocturnal work our brains are doing—if we know how. 'Dream memories vanish rapidly upon waking, making instant recording crucial,' says Walker. 'Keeping a dream journal or voice recorder bedside helps immensely. Upon waking, remain still with eyes closed for a moment, allowing dreams and insights to crystallize before the demands of daily life crowd them out. By creating this gentle routine, you enhance your chances of retaining the solutions your sleeping brain—through its unique informational alchemy—has woven overnight.'
