Will Trinity Rodman return? Who will win MVP? What to know as the 2025 NWSL season resumes
The second half of the 2025 NWSL season kicks off Friday with three matchups — Chicago Stars FC vs. Gotham FC (8 p.m. ET, Prime Video), Racing Louisville FC vs. Kansas City Current (8 p.m. ET, NWSL+) and Seattle Reign FC vs. Angel City FC (10:30 p.m. ET, NWSL+) — following a five-week summer break.
The NWSL may have been paused from June 23 to July 31, but it was far from a vacation for dozens of players that represented their native countries on the international stage in the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 tournament in Switzerland, the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and the 2025 Copa América Femenina in Ecuador.
Gotham FC teammates Esther González and Jess Carter, for example, represented Spain and England, respectively, in the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 final. England ultimately won back-to-back titles after defeating Spain via a penalty shootout, but Carter's celebration was cut short. She opted to skip England's parade in London to return to the states ahead of Gotham's match Friday.
"I couldn't be prouder to have been part of this England team," Carter wrote on Instagram after their Euro 2025 victory. "Gotham has quickly become a family and a team to me that I truly enjoy being part of so coming back to them straight away to prep for our upcoming game was a decision I made myself."
As action is set to get underway in the NWSL, here are four burning questions going into the second half of the season:
Who leads MVP race, will it overlap with the Golden Boot?
Esther González is leading the 2025 Golden Boot Race and shows no signs of slowing down. González has a league-leading 10 goals in 13 games, becoming the fastest player in Gotham history to reach double-digit goals in a season. She was named the player of the month twice this season and has been pivotal to her team's success. Gotham is fighting to stay in playoff contention and is 5-1-0 this season when González scores.
The Golden Boot winner has won the NWSL MVP award in every season but one since the league began play in 2013. (Lindsey Horan was named the 2018 MVP, while Sam Kerr won the 2018 Golden Boot.) So it's safe to say González leads the MVP race as well, but she will face stiff competition down the stretch.
Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga and Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda are right behind González with eight goals each. Chawinga won the 2024 NWSL Golden Boot and MVP after becoming the first player in league history to score 20 goals in a season. If Chawinga repeats, she'll be the first player to win multiple Golden Boots since Sam Kerr won three consecutive (2017-2019).
NWSL stars shine on international stage: Who competed?
The NWSL not only features the best players in the country, but the best players in the world as evidenced by international competitions held this summer, including the UEFA Women's Euro 2025, the Women's Africa Cup of Nations and the 2025 Copa América Femenina.
Esther González was the top scorer of the UEFA Women's Euro in Switzerland, scoring four goals for Spain across six matches. Despite Spain leading the tournament in goals (18), possession (65.8%), passing accuracy (88.5%) and attempts (147), the Spaniards lost to England, which featured Gotham defender Jess Carter, Orlando Pride goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse and Washington Spirit defender Esme Morgan.
In addition to González, five other NWSL stars found net during the Women's Euro 2025: San Diego Wave forward Delphine Cascarino scored two goals for France, Utah Royals midfielder Janni Thomsen scored for Denmark, Seattle Reign midfielder Jess Fishlock for Wales, Angel City FC forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir for Iceland and Chicago Stars defender Natalia Kuikka for Finland.
That same weekend, Nigeria won its record 10th WAFCON title in a comeback 3-2 victory over host Morocco. Bay FC forward Asisat Oshoala and Houston Dash forward Michelle Alozie were part of Nigeria's championship team.
"I love seeing fellow NWSL athletes here represented in WAFCON," Alozie told ESPN on July 24. "It is so important to see that African players are excelling in the NWSL, and then coming and excelling at WAFCON, just like Banda and Racheal Kundananji have shown."
Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda and Bay FC forward Racheal Kundananji each scored three goals for Zambia in the tournament.
The 2025 Copa América Femenina champion will be crowned on Saturday when Brazil faces Colombia in the final. Brazil's national team includes Pride forward Marta (one goal) and midfielder Angelina, Gotham FC forward Gabi Portilho, Current goalkeeper Lorena and Racing Louisville FC forward Ary Borges. Colombia's national team includes Racing Louisville FC centre-back Ángela Barón, Washington Spirit midfielder Leicy Santos (one goal) and San Diego Wave FC centre-back Daniela Arias.
Can anyone catch the Kansas City Current?
The Kansas City Current sits atop the standings and are clear favorites to win the NWSL Shield, which is awarded to the team with the best regular season record. Kansas City is eight points ahead in the standings and has the highest goal differential (19), in addition to a perfect 6-0 record at home.
The defending champion Orlando Pride (25 points) are in second place, followed by San Diego Wave (24 points) and Washington Spirit (23 points).
A NWSL Shield doesn't equate to a NWSL Championship by any means. Since the league began play in 2013, only three teams have won the shield and championship in the same season, most recently the Pride in 2024.
Will Trinity Rodman return to the Spirit?
The Spirit are likely to have a boost in the second half of the season as forward Trinity Rodman nears a return. Rodman has been limited to four matches (one start) this season due to a chronic back injury that left her "in pain all the time," but the Olympic gold medalist is training with her team again.
"I'm just happy to be back and actually in team trainings and not coming back on the side from step one," Rodman told reporters on Tuesday. "I'm still gonna be Trin. But, I think the way that I would throw my body around [before], maybe not. Maybe just being smarter about certain tackles, certain runs, certain 50-50s."

But in the eyes of Brady, there might be only one quarterback who reminds him of himself. In a recent episode of "The Joel Klatt Show: Big Noon Conversations," Brady suggested that Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback who most resembles him when he was asked if there's any current player whose approach to the game he respects. "It's always that line about who wants to win vs. who's willing to do whatever it takes to win," Brady said. "Everyone wants to win, but what are the habits and the daily habits and the actionable things you need to do every day to put your team in a position to win? "So Patrick Mahomes, to me, is the one that does that the most often because who he is, obviously his physical talent, how he understands what he needs to do offensively, and he brings a consistent winning attitude to work every single day. In the biggest moments you can depend on him the most. That's clear." ADVERTISEMENT Even though Mahomes is the league's most decorated active quarterback, Brady's implied statement that the Kansas City Chiefs star is on a tier of his own might surprise some. Statistically, he had the worst season of his seven seasons as a starter in 2024 (3,928 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 93.5 passer rating). As a result, Mahomes' status as the consensus top quarterback seems to be in question. In fact, he was the fourth-highest-ranked quarterback in "Madden NFL 26," trailing Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow. However, Mahomes has beaten all three quarterbacks in the AFC Championship Game in each of the last three seasons. That's just part of the reason why "First Things First's" Nick Wright agrees with Brady that the Chiefs quarterback is the one who most resembles the seven-time Super Bowl champ, believing that he's also a great individual player when stacking Mahomes against each of those three quarterbacks. "Patrick is first or second in NFL history in every postseason stat and not just in wins, which he's second," Wright said. "One of the contenders, Lamar, his bugaboo is that his production plummets in the playoffs compared to his regular season numbers. In that regard, the most important part, he's out. Joe Burrow, if Patrick ever went back-to-back years with peak Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce and it's like, 'You know what, just couldn't overcome the bad defense. We missed the playoffs.' But Burrow has missed the playoffs in back-to-back years with Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase. "The Josh thing I've listened to people say he's the best quarterback in the league, it makes my mind numb because if there's a quarterback in football that Patrick Mahomes was 0-4 in the playoffs against and never outplayed in the playoffs and I went, 'You know what? I don't care, Mahomes is better.' You'd say, 'You're an insane homer.' Patrick is judged against Patrick at his best. Patrick is judged against Patrick at his worst." Burrow, Jackson and Allen were statistically superior quarterbacks to Mahomes last year. Burrow led the league in passing yards and touchdowns, while Jackson and Allen battled it out for MVP. But, as Wright mentioned, none of them have the team accomplishments that Mahomes has. And all three had the chance to knock down Mahomes, too. Burrow threw an interception with the game tied in the fourth quarter against Mahomes' Chiefs in the 2022 AFC Championship Game. A year later, Jackson made a similar mistake, throwing an interception in the end zone with the Ravens trailing by 10 to the Chiefs in a game they eventually lost, 17-10. This past season, Allen and the Bills had the ball while trailing 32-29 in the final minutes before turning the ball over on downs. Burrow has beaten Mahomes in the past, taking him down in the 2021 AFC Championship Game. However, he was unable to win the Super Bowl two weeks later. Without that, Brady indicated that it'd be hard to place Burrow, Jackson and Allen on the same tier as Mahomes. "There's other guys that are still developing, and they need to prove it before, in my mind, I can say, 'Oh yeah, he's done it.' Well, obviously, he hasn't done it yet," Brady said. "They've all shown flashes of amazing things. They're all great players. All of them can make tremendous plays. "At some point, they need to take the next step and take, in my mind, more ownership of what they're doing, in terms of the organizational level, to do more things to empower more people, to get more people on that train or that bus with you to head in the direction you want to go." Adding to his last point, Brady recalled how his approach to the game ultimately led to his unprecedented success on the field. Now that he's retired, he'd like to see more quarterbacks do the same, and if they do, maybe they can be placed on the same level as Mahomes. "The quarterback, in many ways, is the CEO of the team," Brady said. "Certainly, on game day, there's nobody that impacts the game more than the quarterback in NFL football. Now, you have to have the ability and the belief from the entire team, offensively and defensively, that your word means so much. And how you act every day matters to all three phases of the game. "As a quarterback, you don't just punch the clock, 'I did my job, I threw for 40 touchdowns, why are we not winning?' What are you doing in the offseason to help your defense? What are you doing to push the personnel department, to get people doing the right thing? Are you involved in game planning? I used to do game plans. I used to walk in and say, 'Here's the things we're doing.' I used to do my own walk-throughs. I used to say, 'Alright, guys, I don't give a f--- if the coaches want to come, we're doing our walk-through.'" "That's what Peyton Manning did. That's what Drew Brees did. What looked to be a dream season for Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has started going sideways. Crow-Armstrong not only made his first All-Star team this season, but he was a top contender for Most Valuable Player honors in the National League. But since the start of August, he's been mired in an inexplicable, horrific slump. Granted, it's only been 10 games. But Crow-Armstrong is 3-for-37 with two walks and a double, striking out 14 times. That's an OPS of .213, bringing his season mark down to .815 and putting him at long odds to get back in the MVP race. On Tuesday, Crow-Armstrong talked about his slump with The Athletic's Sadahev Sharma, and he couldn't pin down much in the way of a concrete cause for his lack of production. "Nothing is really wrong," Crow-Armstrong told Sharma. "I just suck at hitting baseballs sometimes right now. That's OK. It doesn't feel OK when I'm on the field and want to help my team win. You'd like to be the kick-starter or game-changer." Sharma also presented data that suggested that rather than chasing outside the strike zone too much, which is a staple of his game anyway, Crow-Armstrong is actually missing good pitches to hit when they come. "That's kind of what he's going through right now," hitting coach Dustin Kelly said, per Sharma. "There's not a ton of stuff with the swing that's different; the tempo looks really good. Sometimes you go through spells where you just don't get it on the barrel like you want to and it ends up on the ground." So perhaps this is just baseball, and it's still a short enough slump that Crow-Armstrong can turn things around with a good week or two. But he could have hardly picked a worse time to stop producing, because no one seems to be able to pick up the slack. NWSL expansion team, the Denver Summit, acquires its first player in a trade with the Pride
The Denver Summit have acquired forward Ally Watt in a trade with the Orlando Pride, making her the expansion club's first player. The Summit will start play in the National Women's Soccer League next season. As part of the deal announced Wednesday, Watt was loaned back to the Pride for the rest of this season. Watt, a 28-year-old native of Colorado Springs, has been with the Pride since 2022, making 73 appearances across all competitions with the club and scoring eight goals with six assists. She also had stints with the North Carolina Courage and the Seattle Reign. The announcement comes a week after the Summit announced that Nick Cushing would be the team's head coach. 'It's an incredible honor to be the first player in Denver Summit FC history,' Watt said in a statement Wednesday. 'As a Coloradan, this opportunity means so much to me, not just to play the game I love, but to represent the place that shaped who I am in front of the people that mean the most to me. I'm proud to help lay the foundation for something special alongside Nick Cushing, and I can't wait to be a part of building a team that this city can be proud of.' Watt was signed by Denver through the 2028 season. Orlando receives $75,000 in expansion allocation money and $35,500 in intra-league transfer funds as part of the trade. 'Ally has been an exceptional contributor to our organization, and when the opportunity arose to facilitate her return to Colorado — where she can help establish professional women's soccer in her home state — we knew it was the right decision,' said Pride sporting director Haley Carter. 'The loan structure through 2025 allows us to retain her valuable contributions on the field as we pursue our championship goals, while also enabling her to be part of Denver's inaugural NWSL season.'
