On Monday, July 28, the areas were hit with heavy rain and floods, resulting in 28 deaths in the Beijing district of Miyun and two deaths in the Yanqing district, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.
An additional eight people were also confirmed to have died in Hebei province, per BBC News.
The floods caused significant casualties, power outages and damage to property and roads, triggering a mass evacuation in the region.
As of Tuesday, July 29, more than 80,000 people were safely evacuated to shelters outside of the flood zone in Beijing, per Xinhua.
'Heavy rain started to hit on Saturday night, flooding some homes in the town," Cui Di, deputy chief of Shicheng Township in Miyun, told the outlet. "During emergencies like this, it's tough for everyone. We do our best to make the shelter as comfortable as possible to ease their anxiety.'
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for 'all-out efforts' in search and rescue operations and flood control as he told authorities to prepare for the "worst-case and extreme scenarios," BBC News and Xinhua reported.
The Chinese Liberation Army and local armed police force and militias have assisted in disaster relief efforts by conducting rescue operations, repairing damaged roads and providing supplies to those in need, per Xinhua.
China's Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management offered 350 million yuan ($49 million) for recovery efforts. China's National Development and Reform Commission also allocated 200 million yuan ($28 millon) in relief efforts, per Xinhua.
Beijing issued an alert for rainstorms on Monday evening as local flood control headquarters 'activated the highest level of its citywide flood-control emergency response mechanism,' per BBC News and Xinhua.

The peak flow in the Qingshui River running through Miyun was dramatically higher than normal, Xinhua reported as evidence of the strength of the flooding.
By 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, rainfall in Taishitun Township, Miyun, began to subside and some local shops opened up again, according to the outlet.
The rainstorm alert in Beijing ended at 2:30 p.m. local time, per BBC News. However, additional rain is forecasted in the coming days.

Over 600 American firefighters battling Canadian wildfires; roughly 16 million acres burned
Wildfires continued to rage across Canada on Friday, with nearly three dozen new blazes, bringing the total number of active fires to 673. According to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, there have been more than 3,700 fires this season, trailing only 2023 as the most severe ever, and scorching roughly 16 million acres. "It's an unfortunate reality," Shannon Graf, wildfire information officer for the Government of the Northwest Territories, lamented to WCCO News. "If we could stop the smoke we'd be stopping it here real quick." Many out-of-control fires are in the Northwest Territories, a massive expanse that borders Alaska. Hundreds of other blazes are raging in the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, just to the northwest of Minnesota. "We've got crews from out of the territory and from out of the country," Graf explained. "We've got helicopters, we've got airplanes. We've got crews on the ground. We've got incident management teams running all of these crews. Basically, we are working our people as much and as best we can while still keeping them healthy." More than 600 American firefighters have traveled to Canada this summer to help battle those wildfires, the U.S. Forest Service reported last month. Millions face drenching as warnings issued
Heavy rain is set to hammer New South Wales this weekend, prompting multiple flood warnings across the east coast. Rainfall totals between Newcastle and Moruya, reached up to 40mm in the past 24 hours and the northwest slopes and plains also received up to 30mm. Sky news meteorologist Helen Reid said the worst of the weather is set to hit Saturday with 24 hour totals up to 90mm possible. 'It has been a cold and wet week across New South Wales, with showers and rain pushing onto the East Coast in particular,' she said. 'The rain and the wind is expected to peak today with the Mid North Coast, the Upper Hunter and parts of the Northern Tablelands likely to get the heaviest falls.' A severe weather warning is in place for parts of the Upper Hunter, Mid North Coast, Northern Tablelands and the North West slopes and plains for heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 kilometres an hour. Parts of Queensland will also be hit with strong winds extending to all coasts between the Queensland border and the Illawarra on Sunday. 'The strong winds also whipping up larger powerful surf with a hazardous surf warning current for the Macquarie coast,' Ms Reid said. The wild weather is expected to ease on Sunday with showers lingering into the start of the week. 'The complex low pressure system off the northern New South Wales coast is expected to start moving away from the mainland on Sunday, dragging with it the worst of the wind and the rain,' Ms Reid said. A separate cold front is also forecast in Western Australia bringing rain, thunderstorms and hail. A severe weather warning for damaging winds and heavy rainfall is in place for areas around Perth, Bunbury and Albany. Darwin is set to be warm and sunny reaching 31C, while Brisbane is expecting showers and sunny spells, reaching 19C. Canberra will be cool with a top of 13Cwith patchy drizzle. Melbourne and Hobart are expecting to stay overcast with some sun and highs of 15C and 14C respectively. Adelaide should see some sun, reaching a high of 14C.
