Islamic Arts Biennale 2025 closes in Jeddah, cements role as global cultural platform

JEDDAH — The second edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale, titled And All That Is In Between, concluded on May 25, 2025, after a four-month run at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, affirming its position as a leading global platform for Islamic arts.
Organized by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, the Biennale brought together over 500 historical and contemporary works across five exhibition halls and expansive outdoor spaces spanning more than 100,000 square meters.
With participation from 30 international institutions representing 21 countries, and featuring 29 new commissions, the event offered a rich exploration of Islamic culture through faith, time, and material heritage.
One of the most notable highlights was the first-ever public display outside Makkah of the complete Kiswah, the cloth that covers the Holy Kaaba, shown alongside rare sacred artifacts from Makkah and Madinah.
The contemporary section, curated by Muhannad Shono, included standout works such as the AlMusalla Prize–winning structure by EAST Architecture Studio, made from palm fiber and partially featured in Venice as part of the Rooted Transience exhibition.The Biennale's closing symposium was marked by the announcement of several forward-looking initiatives by Rakan Altouq, Vice Chairman of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation and Assistant Minister of Culture. These include grants for joint research, a digitization platform to archive the exhibition's works, and international conferences aimed at expanding knowledge-sharing on Islamic arts.The Biennale also had a significant community and educational impact, with over 23,110 students visiting and more than 15,000 participants engaging in 446 public programs, including guided tours, symposia, and hands-on workshops. Notable cultural initiatives included Turuq, a culinary and cultural exploration of movement and trade, and MADE., a design forum connecting global creatives with Islamic traditions.Aya Al-Bakree, CEO of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, praised the collaborative spirit behind the Biennale's success. Balad Al-Fann returns to Historic Jeddah with contemporary art exhibitions
Saudi Gazette report JEDDAH — The Ministry of Culture launched the second edition of the "Balad Al-Fann", which includes a series of art exhibitions held in the historic Jeddah area. The event will continue until June 15. The program includes a memorial exhibition for the late artist Hisham Bnjabi, titled "Memory of the City, the People, and the Nation," held at Naseef Boutique. It celebrates his artistic legacy through audio-visual archives and private collections, exhibited for the first time, documenting his artistic career and his relationship with Jeddah as a city and a memory. Naseef Boutique is hosting a memorial exhibition for the late artist Safia Binzagr, exploring the region's history through photographs, archives, and artifacts that shed light on Jeddah's social and architectural memory. The events also include a photography exhibition titled "Texture of Time" at Beit Barghouta, highlighting crafts and visual memory, an experimental exhibition of handicrafts and Arabic calligraphy using contemporary interactive methods, held at Beit Fatima Nawara, and an artist-in-residence exhibition titled "Narratives of Craft" at Beit Shuaib. The diversity of exhibitions at Balad Al Fann reflects a new creative approach to telling the local story from the heart of historic Jeddah, through the intersection of archival materials, installations, and contemporary images within spaces that respond to the identity of the place and invoke its history as a living source of inspiration. This year's exhibitions bear the theme "Stories in the Memory of the Place," which highlights the narrative nature of Jeddah's historical experiences and evokes inherited stories as essential components of the region's cultural identity, bringing together oral tradition and contemporary creative expressions. The "Balad Al Fan" initiative is part of the Ministry of Culture's efforts to revive historic Jeddah as a center for cultural production, enhance community engagement with the region's architectural and human heritage, and stimulate creativity and develop the local cultural economy by supporting talent and providing sustainable exhibition platforms within the historical area. This will achieve the goals of Vision 2030, which aims to consolidate Saudi Arabia's position on the global cultural map and develop renewable cultural platforms within its heritage sites.

Al Ittihad lift Saudi Pro League title in dazzling celebration at packed Jewel Stadium
Saudi Gazette report JEDDAH — In a historic night of celebration, Al Ittihad concluded their title-winning campaign in the Saudi Pro League with a 1-0 victory over Damac on Monday at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah. The final matchday was more than a football fixture — it was a spectacle of unity, passion, and triumph. With four massive tifos unfurled across the stands, including the main banner reading "When we talk, we do," the crowd of over 60,000 created an electric atmosphere befitting champions. Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn netted the decisive goal in the 72nd minute, sealing Ittihad's 27th win of the season and lifting them to 83 points, ten clear at the top. Damac, meanwhile, ended the campaign 14th with 35 points. Following the final whistle, Saudi Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal presented the championship trophy to captain Karim Benzema, who led his teammates to the podium amid fireworks and deafening cheers.
