American Heritage's Bennett is the Broward Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year
Few athletes experience the kind of success, American Heritage junior Braylen Bennett has in one season, or let alone a high school career.
Bennett's willingness to learn and work ethic have made it possible for him to succeed as both a standout cornerback on the Patriots' football team and as one of the best track and field sprinters in the state.
After helping American Heritage win a state title in football in the fall, Bennett carried his drive to the track in the spring where he won three state championships, earning him the Miami Herald's Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year honors for Broward County.
Bennett secured state championships in the 100 and 200 meters and was also part of a state championship-winning 400-meter relay in Class 3A.
'At the start of the season coming off football, I didn't want to rush anything so I just followed what my coaches told me,' Bennett said. 'I wasn't running as fast as I wanted to, but I just trusted in it. As the season went on, I got stronger and faster and once I got to state, I knew what I was capable of running.'
Bennett had already been part of a state title-winning relay the prior season with his brother, Brandon, former Heritage runner Zamarii Sanders, and Heritage alum Xavier Lucas, which set a state meet record in 39.39 seconds.
This season's group, which also included both of the Bennett brothers, along with senior Cayden Smith and sophomore Amare Nugent, another promising cornerback in football, didn't beat that record. But their time of 40.46 seconds was enough to repeat as state champions.
Individually, Bennett blazed past the competition throughout most of the season.
He won the 100 meters at state with a time of 10.59 seconds and then secured the 200 meter title in 20.66 seconds.
'Running against the top competition in South Florida and really this state, I felt like winning all three (state titles) meant a lot and it showed how much I've grown,' Bennett said.
Bennett heads into his senior season still undecided on his college destination, but hoping to find the right school where he can continue to succeed on and off the field.
'Picking the right school where I could grow is important to me,' Bennett said. 'I want to find out who I am outside of sports and I want to find a school that can help me do that.'

Patriots Rookie Running Back TreVeyon Henderson Predicted to Become Starter
Patriots Rookie Running Back TreVeyon Henderson Predicted to Become Starter originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Rhamondre Stevenson has kept a stronghold on the New England Patriots' starting running back job over the past two seasons, appearing first on the depth chart in 26 of the team's 34 games. Advertisement But Stevenson showed some chinks in his armor during the previous campaign, as he fumbled the ball seven times, which led to his benching at one point in the . Ball security will almost certainly be one of Stevenson's priorities heading into 2025, and improvements in that area will boost his stock in a competitive Patriots running back room. Bleacher Report's Mitch Milani, however, predicts Stevenson will eventually lose his spot on the depth chart to an up-and-coming talent: rookie TreVeyon Henderson. In fact, Stevenson topped Milani's list of "NFL Stars Who'll Lose Jobs," which Milani discussed in an episode of Bleacher Report's NFL Daily Live Show on Monday. 'Rhamondre Stevenson has a little bit more competition than he's had in previous seasons. Not only does he have a new regime, a new head coach and a former – but also new – offensive coordinator, but he also has a new member in his backfield," Milani said in the video. "TreVeyon Henderson – out of Ohio State, [a] second-round pick – was one of, if not the, most explosive running back in the entire draft class. And now, he is fighting, pushing Rhamondre for his starting job.' Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson (32) holds the national championship trophy after his team's defeat of Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff title game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Jan. 21, Cairns / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Milani anticipates that Stevenson, should he lose the starting job, will continue to be relied upon and earn game reps in the backfield, but he believes Henderson has a higher ceiling in Josh McDaniel's offensive system, which has historically relied on pass-catching running backs. Advertisement "When we think of the Tom Brady era of Patriot football... We think of the Kevin Folk's, and the Shane Vereen's, and the James White's of the world," Milani said. "Henderson fits that role. But even more so, more expansively, he is a more explosive player, or [a more] highly-touted player, than any one of those running backs." Henderson, the No. 38 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, is coming off a national championship season with Ohio State, which won the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff in January. In his final season with the Buckeyes, he served as a team captain on offense and rushed for 1,1016 yards on 144 carries, resulting in him earning a place on the All-Big Ten Conference Third Team. Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez snubbed, again, in latest rankings
Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez snubbed, again, in latest rankings New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez was snubbed in another Pro Football Focus rankings list. This time, he was not listed in the top 10 of the top-32 cornerbacks rankings compiled on the site. Gonzalez did make the list, coming in at No. 13. However, one would think he should have cracked the top 10 after making the All-Pro Second-Team last season. He was also recently left off PFF's top 25 players under the age of 25 list. "Let the play talk," Gonzalez responded, when asked about being left off the previous PFF list. Gonzalez had a stellar season in 2024, recording 59 tackles, 11 past deflections, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Although he earned an All-Pro nod, he was snubbed in the Pro Bowl voting. So people overlooking Gonzalez isn't anything new. PFF's John Kosko wrote: "After missing most of his rookie season due to injury, Gonzalez started the 2024 campaign slowly before catching fire in Week 4 against the 49ers. He played man coverage at a 50.1% rate last season and earned a 78.2 PFF coverage grade, which ranked ninth among cornerbacks." Gonzalez will undoubtedly let his play do the talking. He could be even more dominant in Year 3 with an improved Patriots defense and veteran cornerback Carlton Davis III lining up on the other side. The duo could formulate one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Stefon Diggs caught working with struggling Patriots WR on sideline
Stefon Diggs caught working with struggling Patriots WR on sideline OTAs are a chance for veterans and rookies to get to know and learn from each other, and it appears that New England Patriots veteran receiver Stefon Diggs and second-year wideout Ja'Lynn Polk are doing just that. A video surfaced of Diggs working with Polk on the sidelines during an OTAs practice session. Polk, a second-round draft pick, is looking to bounce back after a disappointing rookie campaign. He recorded 12 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown last season. There are no guarantees that he'll even make the team with 12 receivers currently on the roster. It could be a huge help for the struggling young receiver to be working alongside and getting tips from a four-time Pro Bowl receiver in Diggs. There was hope that Diggs would be more than just an offensive weapon for the Patriots. At 31 years old, he's also the most experienced wide receiver on the roster. He could serve as a mentor on a roster loaded with receiver talent. Both Polk and Diggs were limited participants at OTAs due to injuries. However, Diggs is expected to be the top receiving option for quarterback Drake Maye when he's fully healthy. Polk has shown flashes of high-end potential at practice, but he hasn't been able to put it together on the field in games. Perhaps he can finally unlock his full potential by learning from a star player like Diggs. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
