Climbers flock to Everest before fee climbs to $15,000

Yahoo01-05-2025

Nepal is preparing for an exceptionally high number of climbers on Mount Everest this spring, before fees are set to rise by almost a third to $15,000.
The number of permits issued to climb the world's highest mountain is already higher than in 2024, ahead of the usual peak demand in early May, officials have announced.
As of early this week, 427 permits had been issued to applicants from 52 countries, compared to a total of 421 last year, according to figures from the Tourism Department of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation (DoT).
"This is not the final number, as climbers are still coming and applying for permits," said DoT spokesman Liladhar Awasthi in Kathmandu.
The increase is not only due to individual schedules, said Mingma Sherpa of the private tour operator Seven Summit Treks. The planned hike in permit fees also plays a role, he added. Some of his clients are still awaiting approval for the pre-monsoon season.
Standing at 8,849 metres, Mount Everest lies on the border between Nepal and China. Climbers can ascend the mountain from either country.
The Nepali government plans to significantly increase climbing permit fees for foreign climbers starting September 1.
The official fee of $11,000 currently charged for ascents via the so-called southern route during the main season will rise to $15,000.
Additionally, a draft law, currently under consideration in Nepal's parliament, would require climbers to prove they have previously climbed a mountain over 7,000 metres before receiving a permit to climb Everest. Whether the new law will pass remains unclear.
Scepticism prevails among experts.
"What is the real difference between climbing a 7,000-metre peak and an 8,000-metre peak?" the newspaper The Kathmandu Post quoted the former president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, Ang Tshring Sherpa, as saying.
"You can die on both."
Climbing fees and other expenses paid by mountaineers are important sources of revenue for the impoverished country. Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 mountains that rise above 8,000 metres.
DoT figures show climbers from the United Sates hold the highest number of permits at 82, followed by India with 74 and China with 60. The United Kingdom has 28 climbers, Russia 23, Brazil 16, Ukraine, Japan and Australia 12 each.
Spring, the most popular season for climbing Everest, runs from mid-April through early June, drawing climbers from around the world and sometimes causing traffic jams around the so-called death zone with low oxygen concentration. Operators said that hundreds of climbers have already gathered at the Everest base camp for acclimatization, a ritual preparation phase before summit attempts.
Experienced Sherpas known as icefall doctors, have successfully opened the route up to Camp II, establishing a path through the Khumbu glacier with ladders and fixed ropes.
As in previous years, new records are expected to be set. Notably, Kami Rita Sherpa, who holds the record for the most Everest ascents, with 30, is leading another expedition and could improve his record if successful.
Mount Everest straddles the border between Nepal and the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China, with climbers able to ascend from either side. Since the first successful ascent by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary in 1953, more than 12,000 summits have been recorded, according to the Himalayan Database.

Buc-ee's opens store an hour from New Orleans

Buc-ee's opens its massive travel center Monday in Mississippi just off Interstate 10 in Pass Christian. Why it matters: It's the popular chain's closest location to New Orleans (it's about one hour away) as it works on building its first two stores in Louisiana. The big picture: Buc-ee's is a cult favorite for road trippers. It's known for clean bathrooms, fresh food and beaver-themed merchandise. The Mississippi location has all the classics, the company says, including Texas barbeque, jerky, fudge, kolaches, pastries and snacks. It also has 120 gas pumps and 24 EV charging stations, according to a press release. The store opens at 6am and will be open 24 hours, seven days a week. By the numbers: It's the company's first store in Mississippi and has one of its largest footprints at 74,000 square feet. Its largest store, which it claims is the world's largest convenience station, is in Luling, Texas, at 75,593 square feet. Until now, the closest one to New Orleans was in Alabama near Mobile. Zoom out: Buc-ee's is a Texas-based chain that has been expanding its footprint nationally. Its first Louisiana store is expected to open in Ruston late next year, a company spokesperson tells Axios. A Lafayette store is projected to open in 2027, the spokesperson says. If you go: Expect crowds and traffic on I-10 near the new store. The Pass Christian location is at 8245 Firetower Road, which is accessed via exit 24 (Menge Avenue) on I-10.

Innovative company's futuristic camper van could change the way we vacation: 'Just a more efficient way of traveling'

Camping is already one of the most sustainable ways to go on vacation, but designers in the Netherlands have taken things a step further. BBC travel reporter Rob Bell had the opportunity to tour the world's first solar-powered campervan, Stella Vita, created by Solar Team Eindhoven. This campervan is completely powered by solar and able to recharge without the need to plug into EV charging stations, making road trips and adventures truly limitless. Conceptualized in 2020, Stella Vita is a self-sustaining house on wheels, featuring a shower, a toilet, a cooking area, a sleeping area, and a raisable solar roof with extended panels for additional solar surface. "The vehicle generates enough solar energy to drive, shower, watch TV, charge your laptop, and make coffee," the company wrote in a Facebook post about the innovative campervan. As long as it's a nice, sunny day, the car will recharge while you drive or stop to grab coffee or lunch, ensuring you always have enough range to get to where you're going. This constant charging helps overcome the fear that some have that their EV will run out of range on long-distance travel, also known as range anxiety. "So how many kilometers can it go, maximum?" Bell asked. "Roughly, on a sunny day in the Netherlands, it's around 750 kilometers (466 miles)," Bob from the Stella Vita team answered. This is an impressive range, even surpassing that of new electric vans. An electric vehicle's maximum range is determined, in part, by a vehicle's battery health. As an electric vehicle (EV) endures regular wear and tear, the battery loses efficiency, and performance can suffer. If you were to install home solar panels, which of these factors would be your primary motivation? Energy independence Lower power bills Helping the planet No chance I ever go solar Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Monitoring your battery health can give you a good idea about your vehicle's maximum range, as well as your used EV's projected value. Data on the used EV market found that used EV sales increased 63% from 2023 to 2024, highlighting the consumer desire to find affordable ways to join the clean energy movement. A used EV is not only better for the environment than conventional gas-powered cars due to zero tailpipe pollution, but EVs also provide car owners with savings on routine maintenance and fuel costs. Due to fewer moving parts and an electric engine, EVs do not require traditional oil or other fluid changes, and they do not require fueling up — just recharging. Although they are still mostly conceptual, solar EVs, like the Stella Vita solar campervan, do not need constant plug-ins for recharging, which would make owning an EV even better. But EV owners can still take advantage of the benefits that solar offers. Charging your EV at home with solar is cheaper than using public charging stations or relying on the electric grid. With government incentives available for solar panels, you could enjoy even more savings with EV ownership and installing solar at your home. EnergySage offers a free tool to help homeowners compare quotes from vetted local solar installers, which can save homeowners up to $10,000 on new projects. Solar EVs, like Stella Vita, could change the future of transportation and traveling. "This is even more self-sustainable, even more self-reliant, and just a more efficient way of traveling," the Stella Vita team said. Nepal celebrates 75th ascent anniversary of Mount Annapurna

Nepal celebrated on Tuesday 75 years since the first ascent of Mount Annapurna, the 10th highest peak in the world, led by French climber Maurice Herzog. Herzog reached the 8,091-metre (26,545-foot) summit with his compatriot Louis Lachenal and Nepali guide Sonam Walung Sherpa, on June 3, 1950 without oxygen -- causing a sensation around the world. It was also the first successful ascent of any mountain above 8,000 metres. About 200 people gathered at the base camp of Annapurna to commemorate the anniversary on Tuesday. They clapped as golden statues of all three climbers were unveiled and placed traditional scarves around their necks. "This is a historic event", Him Bahadur Gurung, a local official of Annapurna Rural Municipality told AFP. "Maurice made Nepal renowned to the world by climbing Annapurna, at a time when people didn't know... it could be an adventure". Dozens also took part in a 42.5km (26.4 miles) marathon -- downhill -- from Annapurna Base camp. "We are thankful to Herzog for opening doors for tourists here who have helped develop our village," said Radha Gurung, 40, a local resident. Herzog described his arrival at the summit as the most exquisite moment of his life. Annapurna is a dangerous and difficult climb, and the avalanche-prone Himalayan peak has a higher death rate than Everest. Since then, over 400 people have reached the top of Annapurna. On his return to France, Herzog was feted like a film star. Three years after their climb, Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary stepped onto the top of Everest for the first time. Herzog died in France in 2012 aged 93. str/pm/pjm/tc
