Civilization 7's first in-game event postponed so Firaxis can 'prioritize quality-of-life improvements'
Civilization 7 had a rougher-than-expected launch, thanks largely to changes that made it, as we said in our 76% review, "the most streamlined and pared-back the series has been in a long time"—and not always in a good way. The backlash was strong enough that developer Firaxis committed to fixes and improvements before Civ 7 was even in full release, and in a "check-in" posted today it shared details on what players can look forward to over the next couple months.
The 1.1.0 update is set to go live on March 4 and will make further adjustments and fixes to Civilization 7's UI, which Firaxis said in February was the studio's "top priority." A number of gameplay changes will also be made, including "significant changes to the Modern Age's Cultural Legacy Path and Victory," and AI leaders will be better able to complete Cultural Victories.
The update will also see the first half of the Crossroads of the World Collection go live, adding the new leader Ada Lovelace, the new civs Great Britain (Modern Age) and Carthage (Antiquity Age), and the Natural Wonder Pack including four new Natural Wonders: Machapuchare, Mount Fuji, Vihren, and Vinicunca to the game.
All of this unfortunately means that the first in-game event, "Natural Wonder Battle," which was set to go live with the update on March 4, has been postponed "to allow us more time to prioritize quality-of-life improvements for players worldwide." A new date for the event hasn't been set but Firaxis said it will share more information when it can.
The 1.1.1 update is scheduled to follow on March 25, and will include further UI updates and other changes. "Ongoing improvements to the User Interface continues to be a top priority for the development team," Firaxis wrote. "The updates being introduced on March 25 are just one part of a much larger plan that aims to improve the UI over the next several months."
Bigger changes are also in the works: New map sizes, resource types, support for teams in multiplayer, a "One More Turn" button that will let players continue past the end of the Modern Age, mod tools and Steam Workshop support, and—you guessed it—still more UI improvements. Firaxis said it's currently "scoping the work" required to get it all done, and while some could arrive as early as April, other promised features and changes will take longer: "As always in development, plans can change and we'll have more details to share here in the weeks and months ahead as plans solidify."
To be clear, Civilization 7 isn't a bad game, but it is something of a letdown, at least at this stage. As PC Gamer's Tyler Wilde pointed out, our 76% review score marks it as a good and recommended game, but it's a far cry from the 93% scores we bestowed on Civilization 5 and Civ 6, marking them both as among the best of the best.
A more pronounced ambivalence is visible on Steam: Civilization 7's user rating remains stubbornly "mixed" and has actually been in a very slight decline through most of February, and there are still more people playing Civilization 6 on Steam than Civ 7. So there's no cause for panic at this point, but there's definitely work to be done.

Considering it came just a few weeks after Hemsworth was officially confirmed as part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, many wondered if the video indicated that the upcoming Marvel movie would be his last time wielding the hammer. Hemsworth recently spoke with THR and clarified the situation, saying… I had a few people ask me about it, and someone on my team said, 'Ugh, we've given the wrong impression here.' We didn't do any [damage control]; there was no damage control necessary. But a lot was read into a little. I was [already] off starting another chapter of this character, and this journey has been the biggest part of my career. So [the video] was a moment of gratitude, and it wasn't anything else. But it definitely got misconstrued and perceived in a different way. Hemsworth's video certainly got fans talking. Some wondered if he was simply saying goodbye to Thor then and there. Others, knowing about his Avengers: Doomsday casting, seemed to be getting prepared for Thor to be killed off in the movie or otherwise see the story reach some sort of ending. While the Australian actor says there was no need for 'damage control,' it's still good to hear him clarify his thought process behind the video. Whatever else Chris Hemsworth does in his career, it's difficult to imagine he'll ever do anything that will be quite as big as Thor. While 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder wasn't as well-received as its predecessor, it was a major turning point for Thor as a character. It seems that was at play in posting the video, as it celebrated the first chapter of Thor, with a new one on the horizon. Of course, we still can't entirely discount the possibility that Thor's days may be numbered. He's one of the few original Avengers still kicking around in the MCU. If most of the Asgardian warrior's days are behind him, I wouldn't exactly be shocked. With the news that Avengers: Secret Wars will function as some sort of MCU reboot, it's difficult to know just which characters will make it to the other side, and which ones will be played by the same actors, as recasting Marvel heroes is absolutely on the table. That's still a little ways off, though, and fans can still look forward to seeing Chris Hemsworth as Thor, at the very least, in Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters on December 18, 2026. Actors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans made history when they appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first big, team-up flick. Now, some 'but not all' of the MCU's OGs are reuniting for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Hemsworth gets real on feeling like an 'elder' millennial on set, and it really speaks to just how much times have changed. Those who were like me were probably delighted upon learning that Hemsworth was one of the many MCU actors joining Doomsday. His personal trainer said this time around, the actor has been eating 4-5 meals a day, compared to the ten he'd eat in preparation for that fourth Thor flick. It's been a few years since we've seen Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, but it's been confirmed he's finally suiting back up in one of the upcoming Marvel movies, and I couldn't be more excited to see the comic book character back in action. But for as little as we know about his role in the Avengers: Doomsday release, we're not entirely surprised to see him already getting asked about the next Thor movie. Marvel fans currently find themselves in Phase 6, which will be the final batch of movies from the Multiverse Saga. Along with Doomsday, we know that this era of MCU movies will include Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which begs the question of if another solo Thor adventure on the table. Here's what Hemsworth recently said when asked by BBC News: I don't know, we'll see where this one goes. We're sort of unpacking all that as we speak and figuring out where each of these characters can go. And I'm just really thankful to be involved in this one at the moment, back together with all the old cast and a lot of new cast. So, it's something that I certainly love, so we'll see what happens. It sounds like Chris Hemsworth is staying really present with the future of Thor (to the public anyway) for the time being, and that makes a lot of sense considering all the secret plotlines he's surely hiding under those baby blues. I would imagine there's a lot that will be illuminated to audiences once we see Avengers: Doomsday next December. Then there's its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, which could include a lot of developments for Thor and the other Marvel heroes as well. So far, we know very little about the future of Thor, except that Chris Hemsworth was confirmed to be in Doomsday when the cast was revealed over a five-hour rollout of the roster of actors. Hemsworth's Thor is set to be the only original Avenger to be in the upcoming movie, but Robert Downey Jr. is in the cast as Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man. Other original actors from the MCU's Phase 1 that will join him include Tom Hiddleston's Loki and Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes Also in the mix is the Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, some original X-Men cast members, Anthony Mackie's Captain America, Letitia Wright's Shuri, Winston Duke's M'Baku, Tenoch Huerta Mejía's Namor from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Paul Rudd's Ant-Man, and Simu Liu's Shang-Chi. So far, Hemsworth has said he's felt like 'one of the elders now' on the set of Doomsday.
