'Busier than ever' year for RNLI in Manx waters
Four lives were saved in a "busier than ever" year for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution which saw 40 callouts in Manx waters in 2024.
The organisation its number of launches around the island's coast increase from 31 in 2023, when two lives were saved.
The majority of the callouts involved power boats, sailing boats, or other leisure crafts like paddle boards or kayaks.
An RNLI spokesman said across the whole of the British Isles lifeboats were launched over 9,100 times last year, making it the fourth-busiest year in its 201-year history.
The lifesaving organisation celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2024 with a number of events on the Isle of Man, which is considered the birthplace of the charity.
Douglas and Port St Mary received the most callouts, with each of the island's five stations seeing a rise in launches.
The RNLI also said more than three-quarters of callouts were to incidents less than five nautical miles from land and the number of people helped rose from 27 in 2023 to 53 last year.
As part of local fundraising efforts, the annual guided walkout to the Tower of Refuge takes place on 27 April.
The landmark on Conister Rock was built in 1832 and was the idea of RNLI founder Sir William Hillary, who lived in Douglas, to offer shelter to crews of vessels wrecked on the nearby reef.

RNLI volunteer recognised in King's Honours list
A dedicated volunteer has been recognised in the King's Birthday Honours. Nick Hayward, from Lymington in Hampshire, has been honoured with a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of 44 years of unwavering commitment to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Aged 18 when he joined the Lymington lifeboat crew in 1981, he was appointed helm (in command of the boat) three years later. "When the [honours] letter arrived from the Cabinet Office, I had to read it several times before it sank in. I'm still reading it to make sure it's correct," he said. Mr Hayward added: "I don't think I could have been more elated and humbled at the same time. "It would not have been possible without my family, friends and all at Lymington Lifeboat Station who have supported me over the last 44 years. "Being part of the RNLI family is a privilege." Throughout his time with the RNLI, Mr Hayward has trained many other members of the crew. In 1995, he took on the role of station mechanic, ensuring the lifeboat, launch vehicle and equipment were maintained to the highest possible standard and ready at a moment's notice. In 2011, he also became a deputy launch authority, providing a critical link between the Coastguard and lifeboat. Steve Billett, Lymington's lifeboat chairman, said: "What Nick has - and continues to achieve - is a shining example of what volunteering and commitment to the community really means." RNLI chief executive Peter Sparkes said: "I am so pleased to see this national recognition right across the RNLI, from the frontline delivery of our lifesaving services to our shops and fundraising groups." Air India crash investigations continue as British victims are named
Investigations are continuing into the crash of a London-bound plane that killed 240 people, with the death toll likely to increase. Air India confirmed there was only one survivor – a UK national – out of the 242 people on board the Boeing 787 Dreamliner when it crashed into a medical college shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad Airport. It is one of the deadliest plane crashes in terms of the number of British nationals killed and the first involving a 787. There are fears the number of people killed on the ground could rise. Images taken after the incident showed debris from the plane embedded in the BJ Medical College building. At least five medical students were killed and about 50 injured. Briton Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, is believed to be the only survivor of the crash. He was in seat 11A, next to one of the aircraft's emergency exits. Speaking outside the family home in Leicester, his brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, 27, said: 'We were just shocked as soon as we heard it. 'I last spoke to him yesterday morning. We're devastated, just devastated. 'He said, 'I have no idea how I exited the plane'.' British couple Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, who run a spiritual wellness centre, were said to be among the dead. Mr Greenlaw-Meek appeared on ITV's This Morning earlier this year, and former editor of the show Martin Frizell praised his 'vibrancy' and 'enthusiasm'. 'So so sad to hear that Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek and his partner are reported to be among the passengers and crew killed today on board the Air India flight bound for Gatwick,' he said in an Instagram post. 'I remember his visit to the studio in January, he was passionate about auras and although I'm a sceptical sort his vibrancy and sheer enthusiasm won folk over.' The Gloucester Muslim Community group offered 'sincere and deepest condolences' after Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa and their daughter Sara were reported to be among the victims. 'During this moment of overwhelming sorrow, our hearts go out to all those left behind,' a statement said. 'No words can truly ease the pain of such a profound loss, but we pray that the family may find solace in the tremendous outpouring of compassion and solidarity from communities across the world.' Aviation experts have speculated about a number of possible causes for the crash, from both engines failing – possibly due to a bird strike, as happened in the so-called Miracle on the Hudson in 2009 – to the flaps on the aircraft's wings not being set to the correct position for take-off. Tata Group, the parent company of Air India, said it would provide 10 million rupees (around £86,000) to the families of each of those killed in the crash. The company said it would also cover the medical costs of the injured and provide support in the 'building up' of the medical college. UK officials are being deployed to India to support the investigation, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said. The King said he was 'desperately shocked' and Buckingham Palace said he was being kept updated. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the UK was in constant contact with Indian authorities. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said any British nationals requiring consular assistance, or who have concerns about family or friends, should call 020 7008 5000.

New bishop installed at cathedral in Manx capital
A new Catholic bishop has been officially installed in his post in Douglas. John Sherrington was named as Archbishop of Liverpool by the late Pope Francis in early April. The archdiocese includes the Isle of Man. He assumed his new role at a ceremony at the Church of Saint Mary of the Isle, which was attended by dignitaries including MHKs and local leaders of other churches. Archbishop Sherrington's installation at his "co-cathedral" - Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral, 80 miles (129km) away across the Irish Sea - took place on 27 May. As is tradition, the service in the Manx capital began with the archbishop knocking on the closed cathedral doors before being invited in by the Dean, Monsignor John Devine. Guests included the island's Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer, President of Tynwald Laurence Skelly, Chief Minister Alfred Cannan and leaders of other Christian denominations. During the service, the letter issued by the late Pope in early April, confirming Archbishop Sherrington's appointment, was read aloud to the congregation. The bishop was then installed in a special chair in the cathedral, which features his coat of arms alongside that representing the co-cathedral. The proceedings also included the hymn This Little Light of Mine, performed by the children of St Mary's Catholic Primary School, and the island's national anthem. During his homily, Archbishop Sherrington said the ceremony marked a "day of great joy". Archbishop Sherrington moved from the Diocese of Westminster to succeed the Rt Rev Malcolm McMahon OP, who was been in the post since May 2014. Archbishop McMahon submitted his resignation to the late pontiff last year, having reached the usual retirement age for bishops of 75. Bishop Sherrington was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Nottingham in 1987. He was also ordained as an Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster and Titular Bishop of Hilta in 2011. In addition to the Isle of Man, the archdiocese covers Merseyside as well as parts of Cheshire and Greater Manchester, and an area of Lancashire south-west of the River Ribble. The elevation of the Manx cathedral in November 2023 followed Douglas being awarded city status as part of the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
