
Intel launches new Xeon 6 chips featuring company's PCT tech for AI performance boost
Intel, on May 22, unveiled three new additions to its Intel Xeon 6 CPU family. These are intended to manage GPU-powered AI systems. Intel says that these new processors come with Performance-cores (P-cores) and feature Intel's Priority Core Turbo (PCT) technology and Intel Speed Select Technology - Turbo Frequency, which delivers customisable CPU core frequency. Intel says that the Intel Xeon 6776P was chosen as the host CPU for Nvidia DGX B300, which is the company's latest-gen AI-accelerated system. Intel says that this allows for managing, orchestrating, and supporting AI-accelerated systems for Nvidia's DGX B300. This is possible due to the memory capacity and bandwidth that the Xeon 6776P offers.
Intel also claims that Xeon 6 processors offer up to 128 performance cores per CPU and support 30 percent faster memory speed than before. Thanks to high-capacity configurations, memory bandwidth with MRDIMMs, and Compute Express Link. Intel also says that these offer 20% more PCIe lanes than the former generation of Xeon processors. This, of course, facilitates faster data transfer. Intel added that these CPUs support FP16 precision arithmetic, which enables efficient data pre-processing and CPU performance during workloads.

Intel claims that the 'introduction of PCT, paired with Intel SST-TF, marks a significant leap forward in AI system performance.' And that 'PCT allows for dynamic prioritization of high-priority cores, enabling them to run at higher turbo frequencies.' It added, 'In parallel, lower-priority cores operate at base frequency, ensuring optimal distribution of CPU resources. This capability is critical for AI workloads that demand sequential or serial processing, feeding GPUs faster and improving overall system efficiency.'

RISC-V can open up locked CPU market: Ananant Systems
NEW DELHI: The RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) has the potential to open the tightly locked central processing unit (CPU) architecture, enabling startups and companies to develop chips for various customised applications, said a senior executive of Ananant Systems . Currently, SoftBank-backed chipmaker Arm Holdings licenses its RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) technology to chipmakers like MediaTek and Qualcomm, who then develop processors for smartphones and tablets, while Intel and AMD's x86 CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer) architecture powers general-purpose laptops and personal computers. Open-source RISC promises to lower the cost of developing affordable chipsets for specialised applications, such as artificial intelligence (AI) inferencing and wireless signal processors, Chitranjan Singh, founder & CEO, Ananant Systems, told ETTelecom in an interview. 'For the last few decades, the CPU architecture has been closed, and there has been no open-source architecture suitable for some of the huge use cases. So, RISC-V is very fit for standalone microcontrollers and embedded applications,' he said. The Bengaluru-headquartered startup, with in-house intellectual property (IP), chip design , semiconductor products, software, and systems, said its digital signal processor (DSP) chip uses RISC-V. CISC processors come with a large instruction set with complex instructions that can perform multiple operations in a single cycle, compared to RISC, which has a smaller instruction set with simpler, more easily executed instructions, making the technology suitable for applications where high-performance, simplicity and efficiency are the main criteria. '...with RISC-V, we can efficiently add a co-processor with specialised instruction sets for particular use cases of wireless signal processing and AI inference,' Singh said. 'Given the adaptability of the architecture, our product will be suitable for other applications like small cell and private 5G.' The executive attributed this to a lack of software ecosystem, adding that it may take 10-20 years to build a sizeable software segment that can run on this architecture. The startup is developing a 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) chip, which it says offers more efficiency and cost-savings over the incumbents. It is in discussions with state-controlled Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited 's ( BSNL ) vendors to this extent. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) in 2022 had launched the Digital India RISC-V, or the DIR-V programme, to enable India to realise self-reliance in semiconductors and microprocessors. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the then minister of state for electronics and IT, had said that RISC-V has emerged as a strong alternative to Arm and Intel x86 in the last 10 years, having no licensing encumbrances, enabling its adoption by "one and all in the semiconductor industry, at different complexity levels for various design purposes". Notably, IIT Madras and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) have already developed the SHAKTI Processor and the VEGA Processor, respectively, based on RISC-V.

Google, Justice Department face off in climactic showdown in search monopoly case
Google will return to federal court Friday to fend off the US Justice Department 's attempt to topple its internet empire at the same time it's navigating a pivotal shift to artificial intelligence that could undercut its power. The legal and technological threats facing Google are among the key issues that will be dissected during the closing arguments of a legal proceeding that will determine the changes imposed upon the company in the wake of its dominant search engine being declared as an illegal monopoly by US District Judge Amit Mehta last year. Brandishing evidence presented during a recent three-week stretch of hearings, Justice Department lawyers will attempt to persuade Mehta to order a radical shake-up that includes a ban on Google paying to lock its search engine in as the default on smart devices and an order requiring the company to sell its Chrome browser. Google lawyers are expected to assert only minor concessions are needed, especially as the upheaval triggered by advances in artificial intelligence already are reshaping the search landscape, as alternative, conversational search options are rolling out from AI startups that are hoping to use the Department of Justice's four-and-half-year-old case to gain the upper hand in the next technological frontier. "Over weeks of testimony, we heard from a series of well-funded companies eager to gain access to Google's technology so they don't have to innovate themselves," Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google's vice president of regulatory affairs, wrote in a blog post earlier this month. "What we didn't hear was how DOJ's extreme proposals would benefit consumers." After the day-long closing arguments, Mehta will spend much of the summer mulling a decision that he plans to issue before Labour Day. Google has already vowed to appeal the ruling that branded its search engine as a monopoly, a step it can't take until the judge orders a remedy. While both sides of this showdown agree that AI is an inflection point for the industry's future, they have disparate views on how the shift will affect Google. The Justice Department contends that AI technology by itself won't rein in Google's power, arguing additional legal restraints must be slapped on a search engine that's the main reason its parent company, Alphabet Inc ., is valued at USD 2 trillion. Google has already been deploying AI to transform its search engine into an answer engine, an effort that has so far helped maintain its perch as the internet's main gateway despite inroads being made by alternatives from the likes of OpenAI and Perplexity. The Justice Department contends a divestiture of the Chrome browser that Google CEO Sundar Pichai helped build nearly 20 years ago would be among the most effective countermeasures against Google continuing to amass massive volumes of browser traffic and personal data that could be leveraged to retain its dominance in the AI era. Executives from both OpenAi and Perplexity testified last month that they would be eager bidders for the Chrome browser if Mehta orders its sale. The debate over Google's fate also has pulled in opinions from Apple , mobile app developers, legal scholars and startups. Apple, which collects more than USD 20 billion annually to make Google the default search engine on the iPhone and its other devices, filed briefs arguing against the Justice Department's proposed 10-year ban on such lucrative lock-in agreements. Apple told the judge that prohibiting the contracts would deprive the company of money that it funnels into its own research, and that the ban might even make Google even more powerful because the company would be able to hold onto its money while consumers would end up choosing its search engine anyway. The Cupertino, California, company also told the judge a ban wouldn't compel it to build its own search engine to compete against Google. In other filings, a group of legal scholars said the Justice Department's proposed divestiture of Chrome would be an improper penalty that would inject unwarranted government interference in a company's business. Meanwhile, former Federal Trade Commission officials James Cooper and Andrew Stivers warned that another proposal that would require Google to share its data with rival search engines "does not account for the expectations users have developed over time regarding the privacy, security, and stewardship" of their personal information. The App Association, a group that represents mostly small software developers, also advised Mehta not to adopt the Justice Department's proposed changes because of the ripple effects they would have across the tech industry. Hobbling Google in the way the Justice Department envisions would make it more difficult for startups to realize their goal of being acquired, the App Association wrote. "Developers will be overcome by uncertainty" if Google is torn apart, the group argues. Buy Y Combinator, an incubator that has helped create hundreds of startups collectively worth about USD 800 billion filed documents pushing for the dramatic overhaul of Google, whose immense power has discouraged venture capitalists from investing in areas that are considered to be part of the company's "kill zone." Startups "also need to be able to get their products into the hands of users, free from restrictive dealing and self-preferencing that locks up important distribution channels. As things stand, Google has locked up the most critical distribution channels, freezing the general search and search text advertising markets into static competition for more than a decade," Y Combinator told Mehta.

Google Gemini Can Now Summarise Drive Videos with AI-Powered Insights
Google is bringing more convenience to Workspace and Google Drive users with its Gemini AI, now able to summarise video content. The feature, which previously focused on documents and PDFs, is expanding to videos saved in Google Drive, allowing users to gain quick insights without needing to watch complete recordings. Through a chatbot interface, Gemini can provide video summaries or answer specific questions based on the footage. For instance, it can list action items from a recorded meeting or highlight key announcements, making it easier for users to extract relevant information efficiently. This could be especially helpful for professionals managing long video recordings or product briefings. To use this functionality, captions must be enabled on the video files. The summaries are accessible via the overlay preview in Drive or in a new browser tab. Currently, this feature is available in English for Google Workspace and Google One AI Premium users, including those with Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons. Google notes it may take a few weeks for the rollout to reach all users. Additionally, Google is enhancing video analytics within Drive. The Drive video player now includes engagement data, showing how often a video has been opened, visible under the Analytics section in the Details panel. This update gives users better insight into how their content is being viewed and shared.
