PSG beat Tottenham on penalties to win UEFA Super Cup

European champions Paris Saint-Germain began the new season by lifting more silverware on Wednesday as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup after producing a late comeback to draw the match 2-2. Spurs looked set to get their hands on the trophy in their first competitive match under new coach Thomas Frank as they led 2-0 just after half-time at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy. Micky van de Ven gave last season's Europa League winners the lead on 39 minutes and Cristian Romero got their second goal three minutes into the second half. However, PSG were rescued by two substitutes as Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute and Goncalo Ramos headed in the equaliser four minutes into injury time. That meant a penalty shoot-out, but it started badly for PSG when Vitinha put their first kick wide. However, new Paris goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saved from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed the target, allowing Nuno Mendes to convert the winning penalty for PSG. Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pedro Porro all scored from the spot for Spurs, in vain. Ramos, Ousmane Dembele and Lee converted for PSG before Mendes stepped up. It is the first time PSG, or indeed any French club, have lifted the Super Cup, as they take their tally of trophies won in 2025 to five. It is also the perfect start to the new campaign for Luis Enrique's team, who had a shortened off-season break having lost the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea exactly a month ago. They now begin the new Ligue 1 campaign on Sunday away to Nantes, while Spurs will turn their attentions to the start of the Premier League season as they take on Burnley at home on Saturday. as/nf

Smith wins, but fails to lick Tongue in Ashes preview

A 100-ball thrash in Cardiff is a long way from a Test match in Perth, and not just geographically, but there was an Ashes sub-plot when Steve Smith faced up to Josh Tongue at Sophia Gardens. Smith was opening the batting for a Welsh Fire side badly in need of a win after losing their first two Hundred Men matches. Tongue was opening the bowling for visitors Manchester Originals. Fast forward 100 days and the pair could well be in opposition in the opening Ashes Test. An uncapped Tongue was the first English bowler to dismiss Smith during the latter's spell with Sussex ahead of the 2023 Ashes. He then dismissed Smith in both innings of that year's Lord's Test, albeit the batter had already made 110 in the first dig. So there was a bit of history as Tongue ran in to bowl at Smith in the Welsh capital on Wednesday. Steve Smith hits HARD 💥#TheHundred — The Hundred (@thehundred) August 13, 2025 Smith had already faced five balls from Sonny Baker, England's next fast bowling hope who rushed David Warner on Monday, surviving a tight lbw appeal first ball then cracking a wide one through cover for four. Tongue's second ball was also widish, and Smith launched it for an extraordinary six over cover. Advantage Smith. When Tongue returned for a second set Smith lifted him over the extra cover in-field for four. Tongue replied with a 145kph head-high bouncer that Smith, hooking, failed to connect with. Steve Smith was starting to hit some big Josh Tongue did THIS 🔥#TheHundred — The Hundred (@thehundred) August 13, 2025 Smith charged the next ball, but Tongue saw him coming and dug it into the pitch. The Australian, swinging shoulder-high, could only thick edge to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, departing for 26 off 22. It might not mean much come Perth, but dismissing Smith once more won't do Tongue any harm. But given the context Smith won't be concerned. As he said beforehand: "You're going to fail more than you succeed in this format, so don't overthink things too much, go out and play with a free spirit, and hopefully make some scores." With Baker having had Fire's other star opener, Jonny Bairstow, caught slip for a duck, Fire scrambled their way to 8-137 aided by a cameo from Chris Green. Chris Green that is SENSATIONAL 🤯#TheHundred — The Hundred (@thehundred) August 13, 2025 Chris Green takes one of two superb catches to give Riley Meredith one of his four wickets The Sydney Thunder allrounder smacked Baker for six over cow corner and four over mid-off, prompting three successive wides from the tyro. He also hit Tongue for six, but was then caught off him for 19 off nine. Riley Meredith, bowling almost as quick as Tongue, soon made that target look huge, the Tasmanian taking 3-6 in ten balls to reduce Originals to 3-14. Green dismissed Heinrich Klaasen, following up with the key wicket of Buttler (57 off 34) caught in the deep, finishing with 3-19 off his 20. He also took a couple of superb catches. Meredith came back to bowl Baker and close with 4-9 off 17 balls, earning Fire victory by 25 runs. Earlier, in Southampton, Hilton Cartwright was dismissed for one as Southern Brave were restricted to 5-139 by Northern Superchargers. Laurie Evans, who has played BBL for Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers, top-scored with 53 and James Coles made 49. New Zealand duo Jacob Duffy (3-26) and Mitchell Santner (2-24) both shone in their 20-ball stints. Superchargers looked to be easing to victory but Jofra Archer (2-15 off 20) took two late wickets and it came down to the last ball. Needing five to win Graham Clark (38no) slapped Tymal Mills for six.

Cardiff City turn transfer focus to incomings as rival boss says it felt like Bluebirds 'punched him'

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, August 13. Cardiff turn focus to incomings After spending so much of this summer focusing on shipping players out and trimming the squad, Cardiff are now zeroing in on landing their targets. City have let 13 players leave so far this summer, with Jesper Daland in talks over a move away from the club, as revealed by head coach Brian Barry-Murphy last night. Given City have four senior goalkeepers currently in their squad, one suspects at least one of those is likely to leave, too. READ MORE: What time is Carabao Cup draw tonight? Nothing is done just yet, however sources have told WalesOnline that deals for two targets on their radar are "promising". Barry-Murphy did not give a timeframe with regards to potential incomings, but the Bluebirds head coach insisted that he was confident of incomings before the end of the window. City's backline is in desperate need of bolstering, with a centre-half, left back and possibly even right back on any potential wish list. A winger is also thought to be a position of interest, too. Holloway blown away by 'sparkling' Cardiff Swindon Town boss Ian Holloway says he was blown away by Cardiff City and he felt like a boxer who had been repeatedly punched in the face after a blockbuster first half. City defeated Swindon 2-1, but really shone in the first half. Rubin Colwill netted a stunning free-kick after Cian Ashford had tapped home from point-blank range. Ashford should have wrapped it up before the break, too, but he hit the post after Callum Robinson played him through. The Robins came back strongly after the break and halved the deficit, however it was City who advanced through to round two of the Carabao Cup. Speaking to BBC Radio Wiltshire Sport after the match, former Premier League boss Holloway was stunned by the Bluebirds' play and was effusive in his praise of Barry-Murphy. "I was glad for the second half. And I was glad half-time came when it did. If I was a boxer, I don't think I'd have been punched so many times," he said. "With their shape, their structure, they changed it when we boxed them off. Massive credit to their manager and team to what they did, their patterns. "They changed it so well, we couldn't live with it, with the team I had out there." He added: "At half-time, if you were a gambler, you'd have bet on us being beaten four, five, maybe even six-nil. But we won the second half 1-0. "I was delighted with the second-half performance. "That was a hell of a learning curve for us, how well they played in the first half. Massive credit to Cardiff. On another day I'd like to play them again, but we've got to earn that right and get up. "I thought they were terrific first half, sparkling. We couldn't get near them." The former Blackpool boss believes Cardiff are packed with talent and thinks they are on the right track under Brian Barry-Murphy. Holloway added: "Well done to them. Absolutely brilliant way of playing. "That was an absolutely wonderful free-kick and it absolutely knocked the stuffing out of us. They were very unlucky not to score, although I thought they were offside. "Well done to Cardiff. I'm not taking anything away from them, it's a wonderful way of playing. "You don't expect that from a team who have just got relegated. So, well done to Brian and his team. They've got some severe talent." Colwill: We had to learn quickly after Port Vale disappointment Rubin Colwill said the players had to work hard and learn the lessons after a disappointing league outing against Port Vale last Thursday. The Bluebirds were held to a goalless stalemate away from home, but the performance arguably warranted a defeat. They bounced back and performed well against Swindon, though, albeit they are in a division below City, with Colwill netting again with a wonderful free-kick. 'I think we had a lot of things to take away from the game against Port Vale," he said "There's lots to learn, but we tried to put those things right tonight, the way we moved the ball, switching it and getting them moving, trying to create space so we can be better when we're trying to attack. So, there's lots to work on, lots to try and adjust and I thought we did that pretty well tonight. 'We come in every day, we learn and work hard. All you want as a footballer is to come in and see there's a plan of what to do and what we're working towards, and then it's up to you to put the work in and see if you can achieve that.' Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes the vice-captaincy will do Colwill a world of good this season and hopes the Wales international can start taking games "by the scruff of the neck" as he is beginning to show already. "There's a phrase, 'One swallow doesn't make a summer', and one good game doesn't make a player. But I loved his free-kick against Peterborough, it was great technique," Goodman told "We need more of that from him. Not necessarily the free kick, but the performance, because he's an unbelievable talent who has been unbelievably inconsistent in his short career so far. But he's 23 now and has over 150 appearances for Cardiff City. "Brian Barry-Murphy gave the players a vote on who they wanted to be captain, and as the vice captain, they voted for Rubin Colwill. That's a massive vote of confidence and respect from your own team-mates. It could act as extra motivation that will make him feel a need to get Cardiff back to the Championship. But he needs to find that consistency, week in, week out. "At League One level, he has to take those games by the scruff of the neck and really influence them, just the way he did vs Peterborough."
