Illegal dumping of solid waste: Pollution board slaps Rs 10 crore fine on Thane Municipal Corporation

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has slapped a fine of Rs 10.2 crore on the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) for the illegal dumping of solid waste at Sabe Gaon in Diva, resulting in damage to mangrove cover. The MPCB announced the fine on July 2, on the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The MPCB officials said that the trash was dumped in land under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) category, causing destruction to mangrove cover from 2016 till 2023. The board added that the TMC continued to break environmental standards as it failed to clear the waste even after being brought to its notice about illegal dumping. The fine of Rs 10.2 crore also carries the extension of a two-year period, from 2023 to 2025, for the corporation's inability to clear the piled-up debris from the site. The dumping at the site was taking place since 2015, according to the NGO Vanashakti Foundation. The officials of the TMC did not comment on the fine. The issue was initially flagged in 2023 when Vanashakti Foundation moved a petition before the NGT. According to the petition, the land being occupied by TMC for dumping was within the CRZ and the activity of dumping had led to extreme environmental degradation, including the loss of mangrove cover. After the petition, the TMC systematically transferred its dumping activities to another spot in the periphery of the city. Even after the relocation, the initial dumping ground in Diva was still not cleared. 'We have stated that consistent dumping during several years in a CRZ area not only breached environmental practices but also caused the destruction of essential coastal green cover. The waste consists of Thane's municipal waste which has now started to enter the creek,' said Stalin D of Vanashakti. The MPCB fine follows a site visit and reports that established the TMC continued to dump on the Diva site and had not made efforts to reclaim the location.

State govt to revive six more small rivers in Prayagraj dist

1 2 Prayagraj: The state govt has taken an initiative to identify the small rivers that are on the verge of extinction in the Prayagraj district and revive them. After reviving three small rivers, including Lapri, Karnavati and Loni, district authorities have identified six small rivers, including Belan, Thotha, Bakrahi, Sevarahi, Ghaghar and Varuna. Officials claimed that the revival of these small rivers will not only help to maintain ecology but also create more opportunities for agriculture, groundwater, and rural life. The Yogi-led state govt is making herculean efforts to revive extinct small rivers across the state with the objective of improving the ecosystem as well as the groundwater level. Apart from the three major rivers of Ganga, Yamuna, and Tons, there are more than a dozen small rivers in Prayagraj that are currently struggling for their survival. Once these small rivers are rejuvenated, there will be an abundance of water and other resources to be found in all 23 blocks of the district. Chief development officer (Prayagraj), Harshika Singh says, "On the instructions of the govt, the identification of small rivers on the verge of extinction is being carried out across the district. The list of identified rivers includes Loni, Lapri, Karnavati, Belan, Thotha, Bakrahi, Sevarhi, Ghaghar, and Varuna." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The administration has been successful in reviving the Lapri and Karnavati rivers with a budget of 102.44 lakhs, while the exercise of rejuvenating the Loni river is underway with a budget of Rs 1.50 crores. An inclusive action plan is also being prepared for the remaining rivers. Officials claimed that reviving these small rivers is possible only through a long process and every individual's participation. For this, the govt is connecting gram panchayats, schools, and voluntary organisations with the river conservation campaign to ensure rural participation. By creating river friends in every village, a permanent monitoring system is being developed. Encroachment is being removed on the river banks, and floodplains are being freed. There are plans to revive traditional water sources, which include activating old wells, stepwells and ponds related to the river, as water storage. Experts said, "To revive the vanishing small rivers, the first requirement is to maintain the availability of water reaching the rivers throughout the year. This will be possible only when the condition of the groundwater level in that area remains better so that the pressure of irrigation does not fall much on these small rivers." The state govt has also prepared a backup plan for the rejuvenation of small rivers. Deputy Commissioner (MNREGA) Gulab Chandra said that a total of 583 Amrit Sarovars have been constructed in the district so far at a cost of Rs 28.92 crores to store around 13 lakh cubic rainwater. Apart from this, 106 Amrit Sarovars are under construction in the district in the current financial year. Similarly, the target of digging 50 ponds has been set in the Prayagraj district this year, which is three times more than last year.

Kanwar yatra starts, but Dudheswarnath temple makeover still not over

Ghaziabad: The renovation work at Dudheswarnath temple in Ghaziabad missed its June 30 deadline even as preparations continued for the kanwar yatra that begun on July 11. Located in the heart of the city, the temple sees a surge in devotees, especially during the month of Sawan. The project, which is part of a Rs 5.5-crore temple corridor being developed along the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath temple complex in Varanasi, was expected to be completed before the pilgrimage season started. The work involves laying sandstone flooring in the complex, constructing a multipurpose hall, installing murals, building toilet blocks for pilgrims, placing seating benches and setting up facade lighting to enhance the temple's appearance. JK Sharma, executive engineer of Uttar Pradesh Projects Corporation Ltd , which is carrying out the project, said efforts were being made to ensure that the major components of the renovation are finished before Shivratri on July 23. "While we could not meet the June 30 deadline, the pace of work has picked up. We are confident the temple will be fully ready before Shivratri," Sharma told TOI. During a spot visit at the temple, the renovation work seemed far from complete, with raw material stacked across the temple premises taking up walking space. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Undo In such a scenario, crowd management could be a huge task if the work is not completed on time. District magistrate Deepak Meena told TOI a show-cause notice has been issued to the construction firm. "We have asked the firm the reason for the delay and missing the deadline. We have instructed them to at least complete the renovation of the temple gate before the crowd starts swelling at the temple on account of the upcoming Shivratri. If it is not completed on time, the construction material will be removed and a way for the crowd will be made and the rest of the work can be completed after the Sawan month ends,"he said. Despite repeated instructions from the district magistrate to complete the renovation work by the end of June, several components of the project remain unfinished, officials said. The temple holds significance not just for kanwar pilgrims but also for locals, as a majority of devotees offer 'jal' to Lord Shiva at this temple on Shivratri, due to which a crowd counting into thousands gathers here. The corridor is part of a broader plan to transform Dudheswarnath temple into a major spiritual and cultural hub, capable of handling the large footfall during kanwar yatra and other religious the kanwar yatra approaching, officials said interim arrangement were being made to ensure devotees are not inconvenienced. However, concerns remain about whether the pending work will affect the flow of pilgrims during the yatra.
