Fortnite video game returns to iPhone app store in US

Glasgow Times21-05-2025

Fortnite hailed its app's long-awaited restoration to the iPhone and iPad in a Tuesday post, marking the first time it will be available on those devices since it was ousted in 2020 for trying to avoid the 15% to 30% commissions that Apple collects on in-app transactions.
The video game featuring a virtual fight on a digital island is coming back to the iPhone just a few days after its parent company, Epic Games, filed a motion asking a federal judge to order its return as part of a civil contempt of court finding issued against Apple late last month.
In a brief statement filed in court late on Tuesday, Apple said the dispute that had been keeping Fortnite off its iOS software for the iPhone had been resolved.

The Cupertino, California, company did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.
The legal wrangling is all part of a bitter feud that is still boiling.
Epic filed a lawsuit alleging Apple had turned its app store into an illegal monopoly — a claim that it lost under a 2021 ruling made by a federal judge after a month-long trial.
Although she decided Apple was not breaking antitrust laws, US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ordered the company to loosen control over in-app payments and allow links to other options that might offer lower prices.
After exhausting an appeal that went all the way to the US Supreme Court, Apple last year introduced a new system that opened the door for links to alternative payment options while still imposing a 27% commission on in-app transactions executed outside its own system.
Epic fired back by alleging Apple was thumbing its nose at the legal system, reviving another round of court hearings that lasted nearly a year before Ms Gonzalez Rogers delivered her stinging rebuke that included a ban on collecting any kind of commission on alternative payment options.
That appeared to clear the way for Fortnite's return to the iPhone and iPad, but Epic last week said the video game was still being blocked by Apple.
After Apple contended that keeping Fortnite was still permissible while it pursues an appeal of Ms Gonzalez Rogers' contempt ruling, Epic forced the issue by asking the judge for another order that would make clear the video game should be allowed back on the iPhone and iPad.
Ms Gonzalez Rogers on Monday asked why Apple was still blocking Fortnite without an order from the appeals court authorising that action.
She scheduled a May 27 hearing in Oakland, California, to hear Epic's latest motion while noting 'Apple is fully capable of resolving this issue without further briefing or a hearing'.

Gilligan's Island icon Tina Louise, 91, looks chic during rare public appearance

Gilligan's Island actor Tina Louise, 91, looked chic in a leather jacket as she made a rare appearance in New York City Gilligan's Island star Tina Louise made her first public appearance in three years this month during an outing in Manhattan's Upper East Side. The 91-year-old icon, who last attended the New York Film Festival in 2022, looked chic in a black leather jacket, classic blue jeans, and black sunglasses in pictures shared by E News. The actor, who is best known for her role as Ginger Grant on the CBS sitcom, rocked her signature red hair and accessorised with two bags, black sneakers and a navy blue umbrella in snaps shared online. Tina is the only living main cast of Gilligan's Island - which was a show about seven castaways trying to survive on an island where they were shipwrecked. ‌ Apple iOS 26 could convince users to upgrade - this iPhone 16 deal stands out ‌ The series ran for three series between 1964 and 1967, with the first series being in black and white. Tina previously discussed being known for the show during an interview with The New York Times. 'I'm very grateful for all the things that have happened to me and the opportunities that I've had," she admitted. I'd like to be known for other things.' After co-star Dawn Wells died in 2020, Tina denied the long-time rumours that she resented the role of Ginger Grant by saying: "Never true – I loved doing my part, especially after they really started writing for my character, originally billed as a 'Marilyn Monroe' type of character. "A different director took over and really started to write for my character. I really loved my character." She also added she was grateful to the show's loyal fans, especially during the coronavirus. "We were part of the wonderful show that everyone loves and has been a great source of comfort, especially during these times. We brought a lot of joy to people and still do. This show is an escape from so many things going on. Fathers share it with their children now. I get letters all the time about that." ‌ Since Gilligan's Island, she appeared in the likes of Love, American Style, Police Story, CHiPs, Rituals, and more. The star also took on roles in movies, such as The Good Guys and the Bad Guys, The Stepford Wives, Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby, and more. She last appeared in a movie in 2019 for Tapestry and was last a guest star in 1999 for LA Heat. She has focused most of her attention on her daughter, Caprice Crane, as well as her grandkids. 'It's amazing when you have a child, and I had so much fun—in view of the fact that I had such a strange childhood—so much fun raising her. Now, we have twins—a little boy and a little girl. They're number one," ' she said to Forbes. ‌ Tina also worked as a learning leader in the public school system in New York City for the last 30 years. The Golden Globe winner previously said: "When I walked into the classroom at a public school, I found it to be a very nourishing, important, emotional thing. The idea of helping a first and second grader to read was such a happy experience for me.'

The Amazon iPad vs Fire HD tablet showdown might seem unfair at first – but both devices are consistently among Amazon's top-selling tablets for a reason. And while they're aimed at different types of users, they each offer serious value in their category. In fact, both models are flying off the shelves. The Apple iPad 11-inch (A16 chip) has shipped over 3,000 units in the past month on Amazon alone – and right now, it's down to £309.97, a full £30 cheaper than buying direct from Apple. The Amazon Fire HD 8 has also proved a huge hit, with more than 2,000 units bought in the past 30 days. At just £99.99, it's one of the most accessible tablets out there – and it was recently refreshed for 2024 with upgraded specs. For casual streaming and on-the-go use: Fire HD 8 wins on price and simplicity The Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet offers 13 hours of battery life, more RAM, and supports apps like Netflix, Kindle and Disney+. | Amazon The Fire HD 8 isn't pretending to be a powerhouse. It's designed for casual, everyday use: watching Netflix, playing Candy Crush, reading the Kindle app or making video calls via Alexa or Zoom. This latest version has a brighter 8-inch HD screen, 3GB of RAM (up from 2GB), and up to 13 hours of battery life. There's 32GB of internal storage – with support for microSD cards up to 1TB if you want to expand it cheaply. Amazon's Appstore supports most of the everyday apps you'll want (Facebook, TikTok, Spotify, etc), though you won't get official Google Play access. And if you're buying it mainly for the kids, the Fire HD tablets still support parental controls, profiles and add-ons like Amazon Kids+. You'll have to accept Amazon's 'with ads' option on the lock screen to get that £99.99 price – or pay extra for the ad-free version. For multitasking, creative work and laptop replacement: the iPad has it all The new Apple iPad 11-inch delivers powerful multitasking with stunning visuals, perfect for everything from digital art to reading and productivity. | Apple While the Fire HD is built around media and simplicity, the iPad is a fully-fledged productivity and creativity machine. The 11-inch Liquid Retina screen is pin-sharp and colour-accurate, making it ideal for sketching, editing photos, or simply enjoying ultra-HD Netflix. The A16 Bionic chip means it's lightning fast – whether you're multitasking across split-screen apps or editing video. Support for the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard Folio turns the iPad into an all-in-one notebook replacement, particularly for students, designers, and remote workers. And with 128GB of base storage, there's far more room to work, download, and play than on cheaper alternatives. You also get Wi-Fi 6, better cameras (12MP front and rear), USB-C charging and Apple's typical premium build. It weighs just 0.77kg and fits into any bag, making it great for travel and on-the-go productivity. Verdict: they're aimed at totally different users – but both are worth the money If all you need is a tablet for light browsing, books, videos and calls – and you'd rather save £200 – the Fire HD 8 is a top pick. It's basic but reliable, and perfect as a travel companion or gift. But if you need a device that can handle real work – writing, drawing, meetings, media creation – the new iPad is in a different league. And given it's £30 off Apple's own price right now, it's a rare chance to save on a device that rarely gets discounts. Final thoughts Both tablets are clearly striking a chord with shoppers – with thousands sold in the past month alone. Whether you're looking for an affordable Netflix companion or a sleek workhorse, the right pick depends on how you plan to use it.
