The Brief
Police say a 26-foot boat was cruising down the water unmanned on Monday.
The Sarasota Police Department says the boater was thrown overboard after a larger boat cut it off.
The boater suffered minor injuries.
SARASOTA, Fla. - A man was thrown from a boat on Monday in Sarasota, causing the boat to go unmanned for a period of time.
What we know
The Sarasota Police Department says calls alerted them to the crewless boat traveling nearly 40 miles per hour, north of the Ringling Museum.
Police say the boater told them he was thrown from the boat after going through a larger boat's wake after it cut him off on his way back from this weekend's Boat Show at Marina Jack.
First responders say it took multiple attempts to slow the boat down, first trying to turn off its motor with towlines before using a plasma towline to slow it down.
This reduction in speed allowed an officer to safely maneuver alongside the vessel, providing another officer the ability to board the boat and bring it to a stop.

DC police handling of GOP congressional intern's murder 'unusual': fmr. NYPD detective

A former New York City Police Department detective says he thinks police in Washington, D.C. are treating the death of a congressional intern in an "unusual" way. According to police in Washington, D.C., Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who was in D.C. for an internship, was shot on June 30 at around 10:28 p.m. and later died at a local hospital on July 1. Tarpinian-Jachym was interning for Rep. Ron Estes, R-Kan., at the time. The Metropolitan Police Department said several people were seen exiting a car before opening fire, when Tarpinian-Jachym was shot. Authorities said that Tarpinian-Jachym wasn't the intended target and that an adult female and 16-year-old male were injured. The shooting happened in the 1200 block of 7th Street, Northwest, near the Mt Vernon Sq 7th St-Convention Center Metro stop. Tarpinian-Jachym's mother, Tamara Jachym, told Fox News Digital that the Metropolitan Police Department hasn't been consistently updating her on the status of her son's case. An arrest hasn't been made in the shooting. Former NYPD Detective and security expert Pat Brosnan told Fox News Digital this is "unusual," stating that in his experience, families of homicide victims are frequently contacted by police. "I think it's unusual," Brosnan said. "Certainly my experience and, you know, in other counties and municipalities, detectives are generally quite responsive to the uh inquiries from complaining witnesses because they understand the gravity of the crime they understand the impact on the effect that these criminal matters that occurred to different folks." Brosnan said the lack of consistent communication could be because of different factors, such as vacation or personal leave. "[Detectives] do understand that need for contact to provide a measure of comfort as well as direct knowledge process of the case. How the case is moving along," he said. "You know, are the witnesses been spoken to? Have there been eyewitnesses developed? Has the crime scene yielded any clues? And all the associated layers of an investigation." In a statement to Fox News Digital, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police Department said: "This is an active and open investigation that our detectives are continuing to work on. We remain in contact with the family and provide updates." In an earlier interview with Fox News Digital, Eric's mother, Tamara Jachym, said her son faced challenges in his life but constantly found ways to overcome it. "He had ambition because he had some adversity in his life. A lot of things have happened to him. And he did struggle initially, like he had severe dyslexia as a first-grader. He couldn't read or write, but boy, he could do it. He taught himself mathematics and how to play chess from YouTube," Jachym said. "He had some adversity issues, but I think he felt accepted in D.C. because he was bright and articulate, and he was always kind of flat-faced. When he smiled, you knew he meant it. It was genuine." The FBI and Metropolitan Police Department are offering a $40,000 reward for anyone who provides information leading to an arrest and conviction, and are encouraging them to contact (202) 727-9099.

Roblox CEO called on to resign after sending cease and desist letter to online ‘predator hunter'

Roblox's chief executive is facing a wave of fury after his company sent a cease and desist letter to a YouTuber known for exposing alleged child predators on the online gaming platform. The Roblox Corporation reportedly issued a legal complaint last week to a 22-year-old content creator known as 'Schlep,' who revealed this in a YouTube video. The chief executive of the platform is founder David Baszucki. Sharing the full cease and desist letter on X, the company's lawyers cited violations such as simulated child endangerment and sharing personal information. They argued that such actions bypassed official moderation channels. Schlep, a self-styled 'predator hunter' who has over 767,000 YouTube subscribers, had all associated Roblox accounts terminated in the high-profile conflict with the company. In return, Schlep, who claims his investigations led to six arrests of individuals attempting to groom minors on Roblox, accused the company of repeatedly ignoring evidence presented by him and other vigilante streamers. In his video, Schlep alleges that his motivations stem from personal experience having been groomed as a child on the platform, which he said led to a suicide attempt. The Independent has approached Schlep for comment and to seek verification of his claims. Schlep also claimed that Baszucki blocked him on X. Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna has launched an online petition against Roblox, accusing the platform of insufficient child safety measures. He hopes to garner one million signatures by Friday. 'Roblox is simply not doing enough to protect our kids, to inform parents, and to go after child predators,' Khanna said in a TikTok video. After Roblox's legal threat, Schlep reached out to Republican Senator Ted Cruz on X and then by email on Monday, advocating for political attention to the company's safety policies. Schlep argued that the platform's alleged negligence toward protecting young players had already been the subject of lawsuits in Texas. It was not immediately clear whether Cruz's office responded. The incident has sparked widespread backlash, reigniting debate over platform moderation versus vigilante actions, with critics accusing Roblox of hypocrisy and placing legal threats above child safety. Campaigns such as '#FreeSchlep' and '#BoycottRoblox' have gained traction, supported by major creators like MoistCr1TiKal and JiDeon. A petition calling for Baszucki to 'fix what he's caused or resign' had more than 48,000 signatures by Thursday morning. Another video citing the petitions for the Roblox CEO's resignation surpassed 1.2 million views on YouTube. After the wave of backlash, Roblox Corporation released a statement on Wednesday explaining why it removed vigilante groups from the platform, without explicitly naming Schlep. 'While seemingly well-intentioned, the vigilantes we've banned have taken actions that are both unacceptable and create an unsafe environment for users,' it said. 'Similar to actual predators, they often impersonated minors, actively approached other users, then tried to lead them to other platforms to have sexually explicit conversations.' Roblox said that while most chats between its more than 111 million daily active users are 'safe and civil,' there are 'bad actors' that attempt to evade its moderation system. The company emphasized that reporting through official channels is safer and more effective than vigilante actions. The Independent has contacted the Roblox Corporation for more information. What Happened to Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans? What We Know About the Influencers Who Died

The online community has continued to mourn influencers Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans after their deaths in August. Kaslo Search and Rescue (SAR) confirmed the deaths of the couple, who ran the YouTube channel Toyota World Runners, claiming that rescuers were called to the scene of an off-road motor vehicle accident on August 7 around 7:30 local time. "So it was on a forestry road, somewhere in the mountains, and quite a long ways north in the valley up towards ... the village of Trout Lake,' Mark Jennings-Bates, a manager of the Kaslo SAR, told Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), noting that rescuers had an accurate location for the incident. He continued, "Our teams were able to get to them efficiently. It's a long journey, but they got there efficiently. So that was very, very helpful. And of course that means that the helicopter pilot could also fly straight to the destination with confidence that he was going to find them." Scroll down for everything we know so far about Tourout and Yeomans' deaths: Where Were Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans Found? Tourout and Yeomans were found in British Columbia after falling downhill about 200 meters, which is roughly 656 feet, according to Jennings-Bates. He claimed that the pair rolled 'many, many times' during the incident. One of the victims allegedly had no vital signs in the vehicle while the other was taken to a hospital and later died. Jennings-Bates claimed that the rescue to locate Tourout and Yeomans was 'challenging' because of the uphill terrain, but noted that his team was able to do it "efficiently." The team has also allegedly responded to several calls around the location where the incident occurred. What Is Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans' Cause of Death? No cause of death has been shared at this time. What Caused Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans' Off-Roading Accident? While Jennings-Bates claimed that the exact cause of the accident was unclear, he suspected that Tourout and Yeoman lost control on the terrain. What Have Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans' Family Said About Their Deaths? The couple's family announced their deaths on August 11 alongside an image of Tourout and Yeoman smiling while standing in front of a mountain. 'With unimaginable heartache, the families of Matthew Peter Yeomans and Stacey Tourout would like to advise that we lost them both tragically succumbing to injuries in an offroad accident on Aug 7, 2025 in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia that they loved so much,' the statement shared via Facebook read. The message continued, 'Please keep us and them in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this devastating end to an amazing Love Story. They are together forever as we knew they would always be.' Did Stacey Tourout or Matthew Yeomans Initially Survive the Off-Roading Accident? Jennings-Bates told People that Tourout was still conscious when the team arrived at the scene of the incident, but suffered a 'severe head injury.' Tourout, who allegedly 'didn't realize quite how injured she was,' was lifted from the area by helicopter. She was then transferred to an ambulance that took her to a local hospital, where she died later that night. Jennings-Bates claimed that Yeomans had been ejected from the vehicle in the crash and had 'no vital signs' when the rescue team located his body. He noted that the couple crashed in an area with 'pretty rough terrain,' alleging that the vehicle fell roughly 200 meters (around 656 feet) down a 'steep boulder field.' Tourout reportedly remained in the vehicle until it came to a stop. 'From what I understand, it's one of the few patches of the road that doesn't have a forest on the side,' Jennings-Bates told the outlet. 'So anywhere else, they would've been caught by the trees — they would've maybe gotten a bit hurt. But this is the one area where they were gonna go for a big ride if they did go off the side road.'
