Meralco downs Blackwater, snaps back-to-back losses

Meralco returned to its winning ways after taking down Blackwater, 103-85, on Wednesday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
The Bolts snapped back-to-back losses against TNT and Magnolia as they improved to 4-5, while the Bossing absorbed their third straight loss and slipped to 1-5.
Meralco started to pull away in the second period as they outscored Blackwater, 30-21, to claim a 52-39 by halftime. Blackwater opened the second half with a 7-0 run but Meralco managed to recover and eventually cruised to the victory.
Chris Newsome and CJ Cansino led the Bolts' offense with the former having 19 points, seven boards, an assist, and three steals, while the latter added 14 markers. Chris Banchero and Raymar Jose added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Christian David and Sedrick Barefield, meanwhile, carried more than half of the Bossing's scoring load with the former making 24 points and the latter with 23.

Barangay Ginebra spoiled Jordan Headings' TNT debut who had 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one steal, while Calvin Oftana had 18 points for the Tropang 5G. With the win, Barangay Ginebra improved to 7-3 before it wraps its elimination round matches against Rain or Shine, while TNT slipped to 6-4 ahead of its match against Magnolia. Blackwater snapped its six-game losing skid at the expense of Terrafirma, 97-82, on Sunday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila. After leading 35-27 early in the second quarter, Blackwater further widened the gap with a 10-0 run, seven points of which came from Christian David, to get its biggest lead. Blackwater claimed a 52-45 lead by the end of first half and continued to take control of the game to claim the win eventually. David registered a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds, along with four assists and one steal, while Richard Escoto had 21 points and four boards. Sedrick Barefield and RK Ilagan had 12 points apiece, with the former having eight assists, while BJ Andrade had 10 points. Louie Sangalang had 24 points, while Brent Paraiso and Stanley Pringle had 12 points. Terrence Romeo added 10 points. Despite being out of contention, Blackwater improved to 2-8, while Terrafirma closed the conference with a 1-10 record. (Photo: PBA Media) San Miguel survived Rain or Shine's late rally, 120-111, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday at the Cagayan de Oro City Convention Center to inch closer to a twice-to-beat bonus in the playoffs. The Beermen were leading 93-78 by the end of the third period before Adrian Nocum led the Elasto Painters' comeback attempt. After Marcio Lassiter opened the final frame with a triple, Rain or Shine had a 9-0 run, seven points of which came from Nocum to cut the deficit, 96-87. A free throw from CJ Perez and a basket from Marcio Lassiter handed the Beermen a 12-point advantage, then Nocum ignited another run for the Elasto Painters as they made a 15-4 run to inch closer, 103-102. In that run alone, Nocum had nine points for his 16-point output in the fourth period. The Beermen, however, managed to recover with a 7-0 run to take a 110-102 lead. Andrei Caracut drilled a triple to give the Elasto Painters a chance with 2:27 left before a free throw from June Mar Fajardo, followed by a four-pointer from CJ Perez gave San Miguel a 115-105 advantage with less than two minutes remaining. San Miguel then held off Rain or Shine in a tension-filled ending despite late triples from Caracut and Jhonard Clarito. CJ Perez stuffed the stat sheet with 33 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and three steals, while Don Trollano and June Mar Fajardo had 24 and 20 points, respectively, as the Beermen improved to 8-1. Caracut waxed hot with 24 points built on five triples, while Nocum had 22 points to lead the Rain or Shine storm. Clarito added 17 points, while Keith Datu and Santi Santillan had 12 and 10 points, respectively as Rain or Shine fell to 6-4.
