Meralco rallies late past Barangay Ginebra

(Photo: PBA Media) Meralco mounted a late rally to defeat Barangay Ginebra, 82-73, on Friday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. After the game was tied at 71 with around four minutes left, the Bolts ignited an 8-0 run to claim enough margin heading into crunch time. Barangay Ginebra tried to inch closer as Jamie Malonzo's free throws cut the deficit, 79-73, before head coach Tim Cone was ejected from the court after incurring two technical fouls as he stormed the playing court while arguing with officials. Eventually, the Bolts sealed the victory after Chris Newsome's technical free throw and Chris Banchero's jumper. Newsome led the Bolts with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal, while Banchero had 14 points. Cliff Hodge had 11, while Bong Quinto added 10 as Meralco improved to 6-5 to cap its elimination round campaign before heading to BCL Asia. Scottie Thompson had 16 points, seven boards, three assists, and three steals, while Jamie Malonzo chipped in his own 16 points. Troy Rosario registered a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards as Barangay Ginebra slipped to 5-3. Vosotros, who parted ways with TNT last April, was picked up anew to replace guards like the injured Jayson Castro and Jielo Razon. The 3x3 specialist waxed hot from beyond the arc as he made four out of seven three-point attempts to get 12 points. TNT pulled away in the second period as it outscored NorthPort, 32-14, to take a 52-32 lead by the end of the first half. The Tropang 5G cruised from then and led by as much as 31, 86-55, with 6:05 remaining in the fourth before claiming the victory. Calvin Oftana had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while RR Pogoy had 13 points as TNT got its fifth straight victory and improved to 5-3. Joshua Munzon was the only double-digit scorer for NorthPort with 20 points as the Batang Pier (1-7) absorbed its seventh straight loss on the day Arvin Tolentino's signing was announced by the Seoul SK Knights. After his contract with PBA's NorthPort expired last April 30, Tolentino signed with the Seoul SK Knights in the Korean Basketball League. Seoul announced the development on Friday. Tolentino is two-time PBA champion with Barangay Ginebra before he was sent to NorthPort where he led the Batang Pier to the semis last conference. He was named Best Player of the Conference in the last PBA Commissioner's Cup as he logged averages of 23.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game. Javi Gomez de Liaño, meanwhile, announced on Thursday that he has re-signed with the Anyang JKJ Red Boosters. Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus also confirmed that former De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde standout Migs Oczon has also been re-signed by the team. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Nocum posted 30 points, while Clarito waxed hot from beyond the arc with four triples to post 20 points. It was Rain or Shine from the get go as they led by 19, 57-38 before halftime closed at 57-43. The Elasto Painters then took control of the game en route to the bounce back victory. Aside from Nocum and Clarito, Caelan Tiongson had 14 points, while Santi Santillan added 12 points as Rain or Shine improved to 5-3. (Photo: PBA) Converge bounced back in the PBA Philippine Cup at the expense of Terrafirma, 117-103, on Wednesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig. The FiberXers erased an 18-point deficit en route to the victory as they improved to 6-4, while the Dyip fell to 1-8. Converge trailed 61-43 with around five minutes left in the second period before closing out the said frame with a 65-56 disadvantage. By the third period, Converge managed to inch closer, 92-88, before unleashing a late rally to claim the victory. The FiberXers opened the fourth period with an 8-0 run to claim a 96-92 lead. Converge took control of the game and led 104-100 with around five minutes left before they made another 8-0 run to take a 112-100 lead with 1:43 remaining. Aldrech Ramos tried to salvage the run with a triple but Alec Stockton's jumper and King Caralipio's triple sealed the come-from-behind victory. Caralipio waxed hot as he drilled three treys en route to an 18-point outing to go with 10 boards, while Justine Baltazar and Justin Arana both had 17 points, with the former having 10 rebounds, while the latter grabbed 13 rebounds. Schonny Winston added 16 points. Stanley Pringle, meanwhile, had 23 points, while Louie Sangalang added 18 points as the Dyip continued to struggle in the tourney.
