Wimbledon champion Krejcikova saves 2 match points in first-round win at Eastbourne
EASTBOURNE, England (AP) — Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova saved two match points on British opponent Harriet Dart's serve before rallying to win her opening match Tuesday at the grass-court Eastbourne Open.
Dart was 40-15 up on serve leading 5-4 in the decisive third set of a rain-affected round-of-32 match that second-seeded Krejcikova went on win 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-5.
It was just the second victory this year for the 17th-ranked Krejcikova, whose season didn't start until May because of a back injury.
The 29-year-old Czech player came to Eastbourne for her final warmup before beginning the defense of her Wimbledon title next week. She lost in the first round at her previous grass-court event at Queen's Club in London.
Emma Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, dropped the first set on her way to a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1 win over Ann Li of the United States. The seventh-seeded British player next faces Australian teenager Maya Joint, who on Monday eliminated Ons Jabeur, the two-time Wimbledon beaten finalist from Tunisia.
Sofia Kenin, the fourth-seeded American, lost her opening match 6-4, 6-4 against Kimberly Birrell, the 77th-ranked Australian.

Bigge was placed on a backboard and gave a thumbs up before being driven by ambulance to a nearby hospital for tests. Australian teenager Gout Gout lowers his national record in the 200 in his first pro race in Europe
Associated Press OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (AP) — Gout Gout is 17, he's being compared with Usain Bolt and he has lowered his national record in his first professional race in Europe. The Australian high school senior improved his own national record when he won the 200 meters at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava in 20.02 seconds. It's not the fastest he's ever run over the half-lap sprint, but it's gaining him more attention. Gout posted two wind-assisted times under 20 seconds, clocking 19.84 and 19.98 at the national championship at Perth in April, but neither was considered legal because the wind was above allowable threshholds. Even without those two sub-20 times, he's still in the top seven all-time for Under-20s, a list that includes Bolt, the great Jamaica sprinter who dominated the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. At age 16 last December, Gout ran 20.04 seconds to win the 200 at the national high school championships and break a 56-year-old national record over that distance set by 1968 Olympic silver medalist Peter Norman. Running in Lane 6 at Ostrava on Tuesday — the timing made it perfect for Wednesday morning TV news shows back in Australia — Gout finished powerfully to surge past Cuba's Reynier Mena on his inside over the last 30 meters. 'Another national record! Pretty happy with that. It's not a bad first-up in Europe," he said. 'I've felt stronger in training these last couple of months and I've felt good since I got to Europe last Thursday.' Gout was born in Ipswich, near Brisbane, in Queensland state. Ohtani may return to mound Saturday in Kansas City, manager Dave Roberts keeps option open-ended
DENVER (AP) — The National League manager for the All-Star Game already has ruled out one potential pitcher — Shohei Ohtani. Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts kiddingly shut down the thought of using Ohtani in the Midsummer Classic with a quick, 'no,' before Los Angeles opened a three-game series with the last-place Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Roberts was less clear about when Ohtani might take the mound again. It could be Saturday in Kansas City against the Royals. 'We'll see. We'll see,' said Roberts, who's coaching the All-Star Game after winning last year's NL pennant — and then World Series. "I've got to make sure I keep it open-ended." In his last outing Sunday, Ohtani threw 12 of 18 pitches for strikes against Washington as he struck out two. His fastball topped out at 98.8 mph. On June 16 versus San Diego, Ohtani made his first big league pitching appearance since 2023. He threw 28 pitches over an inning, surrendering two hits and one earned run.
