The lull in Kannada cinema won't last forever: Meghana

Time of India15-05-2025
The lull in
Kannada cinema
is a much-debated topic within the industry and among audiences, but actor
Meghana Gaonkar
is optimistic about the future of the industry. The actor, who has just signed another film with director Gururaj Kulkarni after The Judgement, says, 'There have been so many movies releasing every week in 2025, but not many have fared well. I believe that's just a phase. It doesn't mean that people won't watch our films anymore,' she says.
'OTT IS A BIG CONTENDER; WE NEED TO WORK HARDER'
While we might have our complaints about no OTT takers for Kannada cinema, we need to realise that the world of cinema is at our fingertips. You can now watch a movie from another part of the world, and learn more about the language and the culture there. Earlier, content was limited to what was available on television and theatres, but now there's a whole world of cinema waiting to be explored. We need to make content that competes with all of that.

OTT allows you to watch a movie from the comfort of your home, but people will always love going to the theatres to watch films. Some movies are just meant to be viewed on the big screen. Take Choo Mantar and Murphy, for example. Choo Mantar did well in theatres, but when it was released on OTT, people who did not watch it on the big screen said they missed out on a great film. The same goes for Murphy. Maybe, somewhere, we are falling short on marketing these movies. We just need to be a little more proactive and decide on what to do, especially because there's so much entertainment right at your fingertips. As an industry, we need to explore strategies to encourage audiences to choose the theatrical experience over OTT.
'TODAY'S AUDIENCES ARE SHOWING THEIR INTOLERANCE FOR MISOGYNY IN FILMS'
Information is available to everyone, and people are now aware of what's right and what's wrong. Terms like 'feminism' and 'gaslighting', which were less known a decade ago, are now common and major talking points. It's not that feminism is a new concept, but rather the understanding about it is now far more readily available. Audiences who may have once accepted crass content in films are now more likely to criticise it as inappropriate.
'EVEN IN 2025, EQUAL PAY IS FAR FROM BEING A REALITY'
When asked what I'd change about the film industry, equal pay for men and women is always my answer. However, people choose to remain silent due to fear of jeopardising future opportunities. I don't make too much noise about this, but I silently walk away from a project if I know I am not being paid enough for my craft. That's my way of standing up to the issue.
'THERE SHOULD BE MUTUAL SUPPORT IN THE FILM INDUSTRY'
When film industry members support each other, it fosters a strong sense of community. For instance, when 10 people speak about a film rather than just two or three people from that film, it has a huge impact. Even when a superstar mentions a newcomer's film, their fan base will likely take notice.

His latest outing, 'Coolie', directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has stormed through the box office, crossing a staggering Rs 118.5 crore net in just three days across India, as reported by the Sacnilk website. The film also features an all-star ensemble, including Akkineni Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, and Aamir Khan in a pivotal role. Reportedly, day 1 saw a thundering start with Rs 65 crore. It was dominated by Tamil collections at Rs 44.5 crore which was followed by Telugu at Rs 15.5 crore, Hindi at Rs 4.5 crore, and Kannada at Rs 50 lakh. While Day 2 saw a slight dip to Rs 53.5 crore, the momentum remained strong. By the end of Day 3, Coolie had already crossed the coveted Rs 100 crore mark. Now the total collections in 3 days stand at Rs 118.5 crore. From theatres to trending — the 'Coolie' mania Across India, theatres have been running houseful shows, with fans celebrating Coolie screenings like festivals. With Sunday and the extended Independence Day weekend still contributing to its earnings, 'Coolie' could comfortably breach the Rs 150 crore mark within its first week. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Hrithik calls Rajinikanth his 'first teacher' ahead of 'War 2' vs 'Coolie' clash ETimes gave the film a rating of 3 stars out of 5 and an excerpt from our official review reads, "While the first half could have been tighter, the second half more than compensates, making Coolie a high-energy, nostalgic, and entertaining ride for fans. 'War 2' box office collection day 2: The Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR starrer crosses Rs 100 crore, sees growth on Independence day, while Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' sees a drop

Hrithik Roshan , Jr NTR , Kiara Advani starrer 'WAR 2' released in theatres on August 14. The film directed by Ayan Mukerji had a good opening on day 1 and that largely also came from the Telugu version of the movie. Clearly, with Jr NTR's presence, the film had a huge market among the Telugu audience, just as much as it had in Hindi. The film has got mixed reviews after day 1, and yet, it saw growth on Independence day . The Hindi version of the movie had made only Rs 29 crore on day 1 while the total collection including the Telugu version was Rs 51.5 crore on the opening day. After starting on a modest note with an opening day haul of roughly ₹29 crore net, War 2 had remarkable recovery in its Hindi version. The film saw a sharp 50% jump in earnings on day two, thanks largely to the Independence Day holiday boost. The film is estimated to have collected ₹43–45 crore net in Hindi on Thursday, taking its two-day Hindi total to around ₹73 crore net. Despite lukewarm critical reviews and a mixed response from audiences online, the film's second-day performance has been impressive. According to Sacnilk, the day 2 collection of the film which saw growth due to Independence day, is Rs 56.50 crore. Thus, it has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark within two days in all languages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The total collection at the domestic box office now stands at Rs 56.50 crore. Trade sources believe there may not be a massive surge over the weekend, but 'if the movie manages to hold collection in the same range with marginal growth, it will give it a chance to perform during the weekdays, which needs to be seen.' The spike was fueled by stronger occupancies in key metros and robust evening-to-night show numbers. The holiday effect in certain territories, coupled with steady single-screen turnout in mass markets, also played a big role in the Hindi version's rebound. On the flip side, collections for the Telugu versions dipped on Thursday. Thus, there's been a 10 percent rise from the opening day — suggesting that the film's non-Hindi performance will require close tracking in the days ahead. However, 'WAR 2' has made more numbers on the second day than Rajinikanth 's 'Coolie'. The film had collected Rs 65 crore on day 1 in all langauges and on day 2, the collection as per early estimates is Rs 53.5 crore. Day wise collection of the film: Day 1 [1st Thursday] ₹ 51.5 Cr [Hi: 29 Cr ; Ta: 0.25; Te: 22.25] - Day 2 [1st Friday] ₹ 56.50 Cr * early estimates - Total ₹ 108.00 Cr "Get the latest news updates on Times of India, including reviews of the movie Coolie and War 2 ."
