How Enova is keeping the lights on in Waterloo Region

Car crashes, severe storms and even technical failure can all contribute to power outages.
In much of Waterloo Region, Enova Power Corp. is responsible for restoring that power when outages occur.
An outage on July 8 made headlines after Thaler Avenue in Kitchener was shut down for several hours due to an electrical malfunction, which sparked a fire and forced a live wire to dance along the road.
More than 1,600 homes were without power for several hours but Enova crews helped get the situation under control.
'It does take our crews time to assess and to safely be able to repair that,' said Matt Grime, control room supervisor at Enova.
The control room is where that initial assessment begins.
CTV News was given a behind-the-scenes look at Enova's control room on Tuesday, which helps keep the lights on in Kitchener, Waterloo, Woolwich, Wellesley and Wilmot.
'We have about 165,000 customers in a service area of about 1,100 square kilometres,' said Grime. 'We're mandated to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have 14 operators in here that make that happen.'
Each work station has several monitors which track something different.
'It's the nerve centre of our day-to-day operations,' said Krystopher Demers, Enova's manager of stations and grid intelligence. '[Staff] are responsible for working with our field crews to make sure we reliably and safely provide power to our customers.'
The control room staff have to keep their head on a swivel as they triage incidents and outages. To even be a system control operator, it requires four years of schooling and at least 8,000 hours of exposure to the system.
All of that experience also goes toward keeping customers informed.
'That's another priority – alerting customers through the outage map on our website of ongoing outages, keeping them up to date on the estimated time of restoration,' said Demers.
Of course, it's not as easy as flipping a switch to restore power, especially with multiple outages at once. It could take minutes, hours or in extreme cases – days.
'So we basically work off the largest number of customers. We will try and find the cause of that first, and then we go down the list,' said Grime.
The severity of the situation and different safety concerns also factor in.
In terms of what to do if you experience an outage, Enova says customers can call in it's not already noted on their online outage map.
If the outage is being worked on, they ask for the public's patience and assure everyone they are aware of their role.
'We are the supplier in the area responsible for keeping the lights on,' said Demers.

Dumaresq de Pencier is the exhibit and project coordinator for the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa, Ont. Late Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson's 1963 Buick isn't quite the vehicle you'd expect to be used by a former head of state: It's about the size of an upper-end sedan for its time – with a bit of extra chrome here and there – but no bells and whistles such as bulletproof glass or an intercom. It's only when you see the little Canadian coat of arms emblazoned on the inside doors that you realize the Oshawa-made, custom limousine formerly owned by Canada's 14th Prime Minister might be anything beyond a run-of-the-mill model for its day. It's surprisingly understated when you consider Pearson's legacy, including a Nobel Prize for peacekeeping, the iconic Maple Leaf flag, encouraging official bilingualism, improving women's rights, universal health care and the 1965 Auto Pact that shaped the North American auto sector (now under threat by U.S.-driven tariffs). Yet, Pearson was a famously modest person, a diplomat uncomfortable with the public spotlight, which his vehicle – recently restored and now on display at the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa – reflects. Pearson's stamp on the auto industry Pearson was by no means a car buff but, by being born in 1897, he was the first Canadian prime minister to have grown up in and around the creation of the automobile. When he came to office in the mid-1960s, Canada was in the midst of an industrial crisis. Canada's auto industry had long been protected by import tariffs on American industrial goods instituted in the late 19th century. The local market was a walled garden, producing a small range of locally sold vehicles. Canada-only vehicle marques such as Ford's maple-spangled Frontenac, General Motors's successful Acadian and Chrysler's Windsor (which remained in Canadian production for six years after its American counterpart), were usually low to mid-range cars fitted with high-end trim, perfect for Canadian buyers who wanted a fancy-looking car at an affordable price. Pearson's limousine is a classic example of Canadian car-building of the time: It combines the roomy chassis of a Buick LeSabre, the engine of a Wildcat, the trim of a high-end Electra and internal components from that year's Cadillacs to create a luxurious-looking limousine on a not-so-luxurious platform. But as the American car industry grew throughout the 1960s, the quaint local manufacturing style on this side of the border began to fall by the wayside. As prices dropped, more American cars were being imported to Canada as tariffs didn't have much financial impact. With fewer cars being shipped from Canada to Europe, owing to the growth of companies such as Volkswagen, Canada's trade deficit skyrocketed. Canadian governments under Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and then Pearson tried – and failed – to boost industry growth with protective tariffs, triggering genuine fears of a trade war that the U.S. auto manufacturing juggernaut would likely win. In 1964, 90 per cent of the Canadian auto industry was American-owned. Its hundreds of thousands of employees were represented by the United Auto Workers, headquartered in the U.S. Any fixing of the Canadian auto industry would have to be an international collaboration. Pearson's administration eventually came up with the Auto Pact, officially known as the Automotive Products Trade Agreement, signed by Pearson and President Lyndon Johnson in Texas in January, 1965. After a year of wrangling with the Big Three auto manufacturers (Ford, GM and Chrysler) and the unions, the two administrations produced something that was almost, but not quite, free trade. The Pact introduced a system wherein American-designed cars had to include Canadian-made parts and a ratio whereby every American car sold in Canada was matched by a car built here. Canada's market was no longer threatened by the American one – it was part of it – with cars and car parts traded tariff-free. Existing manufacturers had to expand their Canadian branches or risk losing the benefits of the Pact, with a 'buy-in' investment of $260-million (more than $2.5-billion in today's dollars). The Pact was deeply controversial among the American public, but auto builders weren't complaining. The Big Three could dramatically simplify their production, making an interchangeable range of vehicles on either side of the border. The Auto Pact's success and unpopularity The effects were dramatic and rapid. New factories sprouted across southern Ontario and Quebec. Existing plants were vastly expanded. Before the Pact, American-owned plants in Canada were building around 650,000 cars and exporting less than 1,000 of them to the U.S. Ten years later, Canadian plants built 1.5 million cars, exporting one million of them. By the 1970s, about 10 per cent of all cars sold in America were Canadian-made and many more included Canadian parts. On the American side, exports to Canada jumped dramatically as production grew. The Pact remained unpopular yet successful throughout the 1970s and 80s, despite U.S. President Richard Nixon's administration threatening to cancel it on several occasions. In 1986, it became part of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, which kept most of its provisions in force while simultaneously rendering them obsolete. Its effect continued. By 1999, Canadian car production peaked at a whopping three million vehicles. Canada's auto sector has faced challenges and turbulent times since: Recessions, bailouts, downsizing and outsourcing have led to an industry that is somewhat leaner and shabbier than the monolith it once was. Still, it has remained an essential part of the Canadian economy, thanks in large part to a modest man in a modest limousine.

Thousands of people enjoyed the festivities in downtown Saskatoon over the weekend, thanks to Rock 102 FM's Show & Shine weekend. Hundreds of vehicles were showcased across 14 city blocks as part of the downtown car show. 'We've got vendors, we've got lots of local businesses. And the coolest thing about this is it's a family day out. Growing up, my dad would bring me to Show & Shine, and we'd look at every single car, and I can see so many little families doing the exact same thing,' Rock 102 Morning show host, Sheri Ebert said. The Rock 102 Show & Shine has been held annually in Saskatoon since 1982, drawing in thousands of car enthusiasts from across the province. The car show is one of the largest in Western Canada. 'It's a great weekend that really shows how Saskatoon just shines. And there's a beautiful city with Rock the River,' Rock 102 Morning show host, Woody said. Rock 102 festivities showcase downtown Saskatoon (Hallee Mandryk/CTV News) The event runs alongside Rock the River, a rock music festival hosted in Saskatoon's Bessborough Gardens. Rock the River is going on its 11th year, and one organizer shared that it has been a welcomed addition to the Show & Shine weekend. 'It's just one of those magical places to be able to have the backdrop of the hotel and really have people experience music in the setting. The bands rave about it. They always want to come back. Just such a beautiful place to have a show,' CEO of SaskTel Centre, John Howden said. On both Saturday and Sunday, folks had the opportunity to check out the car show during the earlier half of the day, which wrapped up just in time for the beginning of Rock the River. 'We have such a loyal following of people that come back year after year. They come into the city from all over Western Canada. They book up all the hotels downtown and they just have such a fun time,' Howden said.

(File photo/Unifor/Presswire) Hundreds of skilled manufacturing jobs in Thunder Bay, Ont., have been secured after the federal, provincial and Toronto governments announced a sole-source agreement with Alstom Transport Canada Inc. to build 70 new subway cars for Toronto's transit system. The deal, confirmed in a joint announcement on Friday, ensures that Alstom's Thunder Bay facility will produce the trains for the Toronto Transit Commission's (TTC) Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth), along with additional cars for future extensions. The move safeguards critical employment in northwestern Ontario amid ongoing trade tensions with the United States. A win for Thunder Bay's workforce The agreement has been hailed as a major victory for Thunder Bay's manufacturing sector, which has long been a hub for transit vehicle production. The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association praised the decision, emphasizing its regional economic impact. 'This is a win not just for Thunder Bay, but for all of northwestern Ontario,' said the association's president Rick Dumas in a new release Aug. 15. 'The skilled workers at Alstom's Thunder Bay plant have a proven track record of excellence, and this agreement provides stability for families, strengthens our local economy, and keeps our region at the forefront of Canada's transit manufacturing sector.' Thunder Bay City Councillor and NOMA Vice-President Kristen Oliver echoed the sentiment. '(Friday's) announcement demonstrates what can be achieved when all levels of government work together. This sole-source agreement means good jobs, economic security, and a strong future for Thunder Bay's manufacturing sector,' she said. Unifor, the union representing Alstom workers, also celebrated the decision, calling it a 'great victory' for Canadian workers. 'Unifor fought long and hard to get the federal, provincial, and municipal governments to support a Made-in-Canada solution,' said Unifor National President Lana Payne in a separate news release. 'We must use our Canadian procurement dollars to support Canadian workers and Canadian-made products, especially given the current trade war.' Sole-sourcing amid trade pressures The decision to sole-source the contract comes as Canada faces economic uncertainty, including U.S. tariffs on softwood lumber and other trade disputes. Governments emphasized the need for a 'Team Canada and Team Ontario' approach to protect domestic industries. 'In the face of U.S. tariffs and economic uncertainty, this decision will support Canadian and Ontario workers with good manufacturing jobs and ensure reliable trains for Toronto transit riders,' the governments stated in their joint release. The contract includes 70 six-car trains – 55 to replace aging Line 2 subway cars and 15 for the Yonge North and Scarborough extensions. Alstom must meet strict conditions, including maximizing Canadian content, adhering to TTC specifications and undergoing an independent price assessment. 'Our government is proud to protect Ontario from U.S. tariffs by ensuring the TTC's Line 2 subway trains will be made in Ontario, by Ontario workers,' he said. Securing Thunder Bay's economic future The Alstom plant has been a cornerstone of Thunder Bay's industrial economy for decades, producing transit vehicles for cities across Canada. Earlier this year, Ontario also committed $500 million to refurbish 181 GO Transit rail coaches at the facility, further stabilizing employment. 'Reliable, sturdy, and resilient – the way (Friday's) announcement has contributed to the working lives of our members.' The TTC expects negotiations with Alstom to conclude by year's end, with production set to begin soon after. The aging Line 2 fleet will remain in service until the new trains arrive. A model for Canadian procurement The agreement sets a precedent for leveraging public transit investments to bolster domestic manufacturing. With billions in transit spending planned nationwide, unions and industry leaders hope to see similar commitments to Canadian jobs. 'Governments in Canada will spend tens of billions of dollars on transit vehicles in the coming years,' Unifor noted in its news release. 'In a sector valued at $2.9 billion GDP in recent years, leveraging this procurement to maximize Canadian content means procuring trusted, reliable vehicles that support Canadian jobs.' For Thunder Bay, officials say the deal is more than just an economic boost – it's a reaffirmation of the region's vital role in Canada's industrial landscape. 'At a time when global trade pressures are impacting Canadian industries, we must stand together as Team Canada and Team Ontario,' said Oliver.
