Zelenskyy visits Berlin seeking support for Ukraine in war against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Wednesday as Ukraine seeks further military support amid a recent escalation in Russia's bombing campaign, despite US-led efforts to end the war.
Germany has been the second-biggest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the United States. Merz said on Monday that Germany and other major allies are no longer imposing any range restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine as it fights to repel Russia's full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.
Merz has plunged into diplomatic efforts to try to secure a ceasefire and keep Western support for Ukraine intact since becoming Germany's leader three weeks ago.
Meanwhile, fighting has continued along the roughly 1,000-km (620-mile) front line, and both sides have conducted deep strikes. Russia launched its biggest drone attack of the war against Ukraine on Sunday.
Russian air defences downed 296 Ukrainian drones over 13 Russian regions late Tuesday and early Wednesday, Russia's Defense Ministry said.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that air defences shot down 33 drones heading toward the capital.
Andrei Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region, said that 42 drones were downed. He said that drone fragments damaged three residential buildings in the village of Troitskoye, but no one was hurt.
Moscow airports delayed or diverted hundreds of flights.
Overnight, Russian forces launched an attack on Ukraine using five Iskander ballistic missiles, one guided air-launched missile and 88 drones, Ukraine's Air Force said Wednesday. Air defence units shot down 34 drones, and 37 drones were jammed.
Ukraine's railway infrastructure and equipment in the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Sumy regions also came under fire overnight, and Wednesday morning, Ukraine's state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia said. No casualties were reported.
In Kharkiv region, railway traffic was temporarily suspended so that police and emergency workers could clear debris from a downed drone that landed on the tracks. In Sloviansk in the Donetsk region, the attack shattered windows at the station building, and drone debris slightly damaged a train car.

PM to meet council of ministers on June 4

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of the council of ministers on June 4, days ahead of the first anniversary of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government's third term in office on June 9, people aware of the matter said. PM Modi is likely to set the agenda for the remainder of the government's term as well as outline the sectors that will see a renewed push, the people added. The council of ministers also includes leaders from the BJP's alliance partners in the NDA — the Janata Dal (United), the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), the Telugu Desam Party, the Shiv Sena, the Apna Dal (Soneylal), the Janata Dal (Secular), the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), and the Republican Party of India. 'The ministries have put together reports of their yearlong achievements that will be shared with the people. The PM usually sets the agenda for the government, which the ministries and departments will then be instructed to follow,' a person aware of the details said. The meeting comes on the heels of Operation Sindoor, India's military strikes against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) last month in retaliation to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. The meeting also comes at a time when the BJP has planned a slew of events to celebrate the completion of 11 years of PM Modi-led government at the Centre. The Modi-led Union government completed 11 years in office on May 26. As part of its '11 Years of Modi Government — Sankalp Se Siddhi (from commitment to accomplishment)' programmes, the BJP has instructed its lawmakers, legislators, corporators, and local body representatives to ensure 100% enrolment in centrally sponsored schemes, such as Ayushman Bharat Yojana for senior citizens.

Game of drones: Season 3

AI-powered drones, as used by Ukraine deep in Russian territory, are here. India must invest in R&D In a first-of-its kind operation, Ukrainian forces launched a massive drone attack on Russia's bomber fleet, reportedly destroying more than 40 heavy aircraft. In what is being dubbed as Russia's 'Pearl Harbour' moment, the strikes took place at airbases thousands of kilometres away from the Russia-Ukraine frontline. The drones were smuggled into Russia and placed close to their targets on trucks. On Sunday, they were activated – exactly 29 years to the day when Ukraine handed over its last nuclear weapons to Russia as part of the Budapest Memorandum. It now appears that the drones were trained on AI algorithms to identify Russian bomber aircraft and hit them in their most vulnerable parts. Ukraine's 'Operation Spider's Web' again highlights how much drones have transformed warfare. In the Ukraine war, drone innovation is changing in weeks. If 2024 was the year of First-Person-View (FPV) drones, 2025 till last week belonged to fibre-optic FPV drones – an innovation by Russian forces – that are immune to electronic countermeasures. Ukraine now has levelled up with AI-powered drones. Given these developments, the war has ensured that AI-driven, autonomous weapons systems are no longer decades away. They are here. And it's not just aerial UAVs, but also sea drones like Ukraine's Magura and UGVs like Estonia's THeMIS – mini tank-like tracked platforms – that are increasingly being enabled by AI to perform autonomous swarm or group tasks. China recently unveiled an array of bird-mimicking drones or ornithopters that evade human and radar detection. To stay ahead of the curve India too needs to heavily invest in drone R&D. Op Sindoor gave us enough reasons to pursue this course. Plus, if drones worth just a few thousand dollars can take out millions of dollars worth of bombers, innovation becomes critical. But it also enhances asymmetric warfare and longevity of conflicts. That's why the second round of talks between Ukraine and Russia in Türkiye, has again failed to produce a ceasefire.
