John Heitinga named Ajax head coach, replacing Farioli after title chase collapse
THE HAGUE, May 31 — Former Netherlands defender John Heitinga has been appointed as the new coach at Ajax, the Dutch club announced today.
The 41-year-old Heitinga returns to the club where he started his career as a player, replacing Francesco Farioli who resigned last week after Ajax's spectacular title collapse.
He has signed a two-year contract and will be assisted by Marcel Kaizer, who had a brief spell in charge of Ajax in 2017.
Heitinga spent the past season working under Arne Slot at Premier League champions Liverpool. He also had a stint on David Moyes's coaching staff at West Ham.
'I am incredibly excited to start. The last years in England have done me a lot of good,' Heitinga said in a club statement.
'I've been able to develop further alongside David Moyes and Arne Slot, while also getting a behind-the-scenes look at two major clubs.
'I'm ready to continue as a head coach and I'm honoured to be given that opportunity at Ajax.'
Ajax suffered a painful end to the season after blowing a nine-point lead with five matches to play, allowing PSV Eindhoven to snatch the league title on the final day.
Farioli revived the fortunes of a team coming off a dismal fifth-place finish in the 2023-24 campaign, but he decided to leave due to 'different visions' with the club board.
Former Atletico Madrid, Everton and Fulham centre-back Heitinga retired in 2016 after a brief second spell with boyhood club Ajax.
He played 87 times for the Netherlands but was sent off in extra time in the 1-0 loss to Spain in the 2010 World Cup final. — AFP

MANCHESTER, June 2 — Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, the two Premier League clubs said yesterday, with the Brazil forward joining on a five-year contract. Wolves had signed Cunha on an initial loan deal from Spanish side Atletico Madrid in December 2022 before signing him on a permanent four-year contract. In February, Cunha agreed a new deal to extend his stay at Molineux until 2029. He started his senior career at Swiss club Sion before joining Germany's RB Leipzig in 2018 and then moving to German second-tier side Hertha BSC in 2020. PARIS, June 2 — Paris Saint-Germain players, staff and fans stretched their Champions League celebrations deep into Sunday evening as they finished a day of festivities in the French capital at a packed and delirious Parc des Princes stadium. Players sung and danced and waved the trophy on their home pitch as music blared and star Parisian rappers performed before a jubilant crowd. The well-wishers included tennis player Novak Djokovic, hours ahead of his fourth-round match at nearby Roland Garros, and disgraced former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. After thrashing Inter Milan by a record 5-0 in Saturday evening's final, the squad flew into Paris from Munich at just before 4pm (1400 GMT). They then set off on a triumphal procession on an open-top, double-decker bus. They were greeted along the route by crowds of jubilant supporters. Waving flags and letting off flares, they savoured their club winning the biggest prize in European club football for the first time. The players brandished the trophy and addressed the crowd as they drove. After parading down the Champs Elysees, coach Luis Enrique and his team went to a reception at the Elysee palace hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron who lavished praise on the team. 'You are the champions and you have put Paris at the top of Europe,' he said. 'There were 11 of you on the field, but there was clearly a twelfth man — the entire French public, regardless of traditional allegiances,' said Macron, in a nod to his own loyalty to PSG's rival, Olympique de Marseille. Post-match violence The president however condemned the violence which had marred the victory celebrations across France on Saturday night. In the south-west town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest. A 23-year-old man riding a scooter in central Paris also died after being hit by a vehicle. A policeman was in an induced coma after being injured by a firework. The violence quickly became a political football in France on Sunday as parties on the right and left took the opportunity to criticise the handling of the celebrations. 'Nothing can justify what has happened in the last few hours, the violent clashes are unacceptable,' said Macron. 'We will pursue, we will punish, we will be relentless.' 'The day of glory' PSG concluded their day's festivities with a party at their Parc des Princes home ground. Each player walked onto the pitch to a different song and each received a standing ovation. Club captain Marquinhos, who joined the club in 2013, was the last to take centre stage, holding one handle of the trophy as club president President Nasser al-Khelaifi held the other. 'After all these years, I can cry now, this is the day of glory!' Marquinhos said, before telling the crowd: 'We love you. Enjoy it! We are European champions!' Even the club president received praise, with the crowd cheering: 'Thank you Nasser.' Qatar Sports Investments, which al-Khelaifi chairs, has pumped hundreds of millions of euros into PSG since buying it as an ailing club in 2011. Liverpool keeper Kelleher set to join Brentford
LONDON: Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is set to sign for Brentford in a deal that could rise to £18 million (US$24 million), according to reports on Sunday. Kelleher was backup to Liverpool's first-choice keeper Alisson Becker during their Premier League title-winning campaign this season. Although the Ireland international featured 10 times in the league when Alisson was injured, he was keen to leave Anfield in search of regular first-team action. Brentford have agreed a reported initial fee of £12.5 million for Kelleher that can rise to £18 million if performance-related requirements are met. Kelleher, who has a year left on his Liverpool contract, also attracted interest from Leeds, West Ham and Bournemouth. He was the hero of Liverpool's 2022 League Cup final triumph against Chelsea, making several fines saves and scoring a penalty in the 11-10 shoot-out victory. Kelleher also started Liverpool's 2024 League Cup final win against Chelsea. The 26-year-old will be replaced at Anfield by Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili.
