Liverpool keeper Kelleher set to join Brentford
LONDON: Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is set to sign for Brentford in a deal that could rise to £18 million (US$24 million), according to reports on Sunday.
Kelleher was backup to Liverpool's first-choice keeper Alisson Becker during their Premier League title-winning campaign this season.
Although the Ireland international featured 10 times in the league when Alisson was injured, he was keen to leave Anfield in search of regular first-team action.
Brentford have agreed a reported initial fee of £12.5 million for Kelleher that can rise to £18 million if performance-related requirements are met.
Kelleher, who has a year left on his Liverpool contract, also attracted interest from Leeds, West Ham and Bournemouth.
He was the hero of Liverpool's 2022 League Cup final triumph against Chelsea, making several fines saves and scoring a penalty in the 11-10 shoot-out victory.
Kelleher also started Liverpool's 2024 League Cup final win against Chelsea.
The 26-year-old will be replaced at Anfield by Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Mamardashvili will join up with Arne Slot's side in time for next season after the Georgian agreed his move to the Reds last year.

LONDON: Chelsea have rejected the chance to sign Jadon Sancho permanently from Manchester United after the winger failed to agree personal terms at Stamford Bridge, reports said Tuesday. The 25-year-old joined Chelsea on loan in August last year in a deal that featured an obligation to buy him for up to £25 million (US$34 million). The Athletic reported that the club and Sancho had failed to agree a deal and Chelsea must now pay a £5 million penalty charge to United. Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League and won the UEFA Conference League, with Sancho scoring the third goal in last week's 4-1 win against Real Betis. But the England international has had an inconsistent season, scoring just five times and making 10 assists in 41 appearances for Chelsea. He scored just one Premier League goal after early December. When asked about Sancho's future following last week's Conference League victory in Poland, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said: "From now on we are going to sit with the club and decide what happens for next year." Sancho, whose contract at United runs until 2026, will return to Old Trafford. The club have an option to extend the deal by a further year. The forward joined United from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million (US$98 million) in 2021 but failed to live up to his price tag. He was involved in a public spat with former United boss Erik ten Hag early in the 2023/24 season and did not make another appearance before being loaned to his former club Dortmund. He played once for United in the 2024/25 season, in the Community Shield in August, before making the switch to Chelsea. Chelsea on Monday announced the signing of Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth £18 million.

AFP Sports looks at five names to watch as the transfer window kicks into gear. Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) Liverpool have shown no sign of resting on their laurels as English champions. After a quiet first year for Arne Slot in the transfer market, the Reds have moved quickly to back the Dutchman heavily this summer. The darling of German football, Wirtz looks set to smash the Premier League transfer record should he get his wish of a dream move to Anfield. Liverpool have reportedly had a bid worth up to £109 million ($147 million) rebuffed as Leverkusen hold out for a £125 million fee. That would break the record set by Chelsea's £115 million capture of Moises Caicedo from under Liverpool's noses two years ago. Wirtz was instrumental in Leverkusen's stunning German league and cup double in the 2023/24 season, plus a run to the Europa League final under Xabi Alonso. Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting Lisbon) A remarkable 54-goal season for Sporting has made the Swede a target for a series of clubs seeking more firepower.
