Kneecap and Brian Eno call on artists to join syndicate to support Palestine

Glasgow Times18-07-2025
They, along with campaign group Led By Donkeys, have all posted the same message on Instagram, calling on other artists who fear they will be 'threatened into silence or career cancellation' for talking about Palestine to join them in a syndicate.
Massive Attack and Brian Eno have long spoken out in support of Palestine, while Kneecap have made headlines in recent months after one of their members was charged with a terrorism offence relating to allegedly displaying a flag in support of Hezbollah.
The Irish rap group claim this is part of a smear campaign against them because of their vocal support for Palestine and criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, which they say is a genocide.
'The scenes in Gaza have moved beyond description,' the post read.
'We write as artists who've chosen to use our public platforms to speak out against the genocide occurring there and the role of the UK Government in facilitating it.
'Because of our expressions of conscience, we've been subject to various intimidations from within our industry (live and recorded) and legally via organised bodies such as UK Lawyers For Israel.
'Having withstood these campaigns of attempted censorship, we won't stand by and allow other artists – particularly those at earlier stages of their careers or in other positions of professional vulnerability – to be threatened into silence or career cancellation.
'In this spirit, we encourage artists who've been placed in this position, or those who now wish to use their platforms to talk about Palestine, but are concerned about industrial repercussions, to contact us @ ethicalsyndicatepalestine@pm.me'
The Instagram post also made a series of demands, including an immediate ceasefire, an end to UK arms sales and licences to Israel, and a free Palestine.
A spokeswoman for UK Lawyers For Israel (UKLFI) accused Massive Attack of having 'launched an attack on our organisation, which helps to protect victims of anti-Jewish and anti-Israel racism'.

She said that following Massive Attack's set at London's Lido Festival in June, 'we were contacted by several Jewish and Israeli audience members who were deeply distressed and traumatised' after the act invited an 'anti-Israel activist' on stage.
Kneecap performed to a sea of Palestinian flags during their set at Glastonbury Festival in June.
Their performance followed that of punk rap duo Bob Vylan, who spoke out against Israel.
Police have since launched an investigation into the group, formed in Ipswich in 2017, after their frontman led crowds in chants of 'Death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)' during their set at the Somerset music festival.
Kneecap's Liam Og O hAnnaidh, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was charged in May, and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 20.

‘I've had death threats': Why Edinburgh Fringe isn't safe for Jews

Edinburgh's Niddry Street comes alive during the city's annual Fringe festival. Like so many roads in the heart of the Scottish capital, punters pack into bars and clubs on the narrow thoroughfare just off the Royal Mile to see everything from stand-up comedy and musical theatre to university student productions and improvisation. Comedian Philip Simon has performed there for the past few years; so much so that, on his posters for this year's festival, he described his shows as 'staples of Niddry Street'. Events of the past week, however, mean that Simon's promotional material is now out of date – and he has no desire to go anywhere near the venues at which he has previously had such a good time. First, Simon and his fellow Jewish comic, Rachel Creeger, had their shows cancelled by the Whistle Binkies bar less than two weeks before the festival started. It was claimed that venue staff raised 'safety concerns' as a result of the extra security put on amid the escalation of the war in the Middle East and the knock-on effect for British Jews. His run of gigs, Jew-O-Rama, is a showcase of different comics, while hers, Ultimate Jewish Mother, is an interactive stand-up show that has also played at the venue for years. Neither show is political, or about the Israel-Hamas war. But they are the only shows with 'Jew' in the title, and the only ones cancelled by Whistle Binkies this year. Then Simon had a second run of gigs, Shall I Compere Thee in a Funny Way?, axed by the neighbouring Banshee Labyrinth after its bosses trawled his social media profiles. It was decided that his attendance at a vigil for victims of the Hamas attacks of October 2023, and public calls for a return of the hostages taken into Gaza, were beyond the pale. He was told that 'it is inappropriate for us to provide a platform for performers whose views and actions align with the rhetoric and symbology of groups associated with humanitarian violations'.

Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty split after decade of marriage

Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty have separated after more than a decade of marriage. The television presenters, who have two children together, married in Rome in 2012. 'We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated,' they said in a statement. 'There is no other party involved. 'We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children, and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment.' Deeley, 48, is a presenter on ITV's This Morning, with Ben Shephard, with the pair having replaced Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby in 2023. Kielty, 54, presents The Late Late Show on the Irish broadcaster RTE and a Saturday morning programme on BBC Radio 5 Live. The couple first met in 2002 but did not start a relationship and get married until 2012. They have two sons, Milo and James. In March, Deeley was absent from the funeral of Kielty's mother, Mary, in Dundrum, Co Down. Her spokesman said at the time that she 'remained at home to be there for her two young children before and after school on this very sad day'. The couple lived in Los Angeles, California, before moving back to Britain in 2020 after Kielty and Milo were shopping at LA's Westfield Century City mall in 2019 when the FBI ordered customers to take cover from a gunman. In the United States, Deeley hosted 15 series of the entertainment show So You Think You Can Dance on Fox. She shot to fame in the late 1990s as a co-presenter of ITV's Saturday morning children's programme SM:TV Live with Ant and Dec. She also previously co-hosted BBC singing contest Fame Academy and took over ITV's Stars In Their Eyes from Matthew Kelly.

Myleene Klass claims she caught husband cheating at family home with mystery celebrity

The Loose Women star opened up about the ordeal and said the mystery celeb has gone on to build a brand based on 'family' life Myleene Klass has claimed she walked in on her husband cheating with a well known celebrity at her own birthday party. The star, 47, spoke out about the time she discovered Graham Quinn in a compromising position as he and the famous female were ripping each other's clothes. ‌ Quinn, who was formerly a bodyguard for Myleene's band Hear'Say, was caught in the embrace on the balcony of the home he shared with the musician. ‌ Loose Women panellist Myleene has not divulged the name of the mystery celeb, but has hinted that the person has since gone on to build a successful career off the back of having a 'family brand'. ‌ Opening up on Paul Brunson's most recent instalment of podcast We Need To Talk, the mum-of-two said: 'I walked in on him with a famous person on my birthday on a balcony.' Myleene, who split from Irish bodyguard Quinn in 2013, went on to reveal the pair denied anything dodgy was going on but, despite the fact she had caught them ahead of any act taking place, she knew what was about to happen: "I'm in my house, it's my party. They weren't having sex, but they were unzipping each other.' She said that at first the pair told her she was mistaken but, ignoring their denials, she ended the party and asked everyone to leave. ‌ She said: "I kicked everyone out of the party, including his mum and dad. They went back to Ireland and his dad said: 'He doesn't get it from me'. 'I remember thinking that was quite a weird thing to say.' ‌ The former One Show host started dating Quinn in 2001 and they stayed together for 12 years, sharing two children together, Ava, 17, and Hero, 13. She explained to MAFS expert Paul that she saw the ordeal as a 'pretty big red flag' but still went through with the wedding in 2011, after Quinn blamed the incident on being drunk. Myleene also revealed she feels no bad blood towards the mystery celebrity but found it 'difficult' at first to watch them over the years. ‌ Myleene, now dating Simon Motson, added: 'I've made peace with that situation now, but for a long time, it was very difficult to see their life. 'My life literally just broke apart very, very publicly and their life, they've managed to continue building a family brand on it.' Myleene said 'first and foremost' her main concern has always been her kids and she's tried to shield them from her life in the public eye, though it's not always easy. She added: 'My children have asked enough questions and it's never been a case of laying out my stall now. ‌ 'It's got to be as and when. But here's the funny thing - school mums, people who just want to gossip, will go to your children before anybody else." Myleene previously revealed she was 'sobbing in the bath' the night before her nuptials to Graham as she 'knew it wasn't right'. Speaking on Loose Women, she said she knew he'd been unfaithful before but still went through with the wedding. She admitted friends had tried to convince her not to attend the ceremony, but their pleas fell on deaf ears. ‌ 'I was in the bath the night before I got married – which most of us know, didn't end well, in fact it went so badly that the priest even offered to annul the wedding. It was that quick! 'I was in the bath and I was just sobbing because something didn't feel right, I just knew it wasn't right. And my girlfriend, now my girlfriend of 18 years, at the time she just said, 'The car is outside.' Like Thelma and Louise, we could just go. 'At the time I didn't feel I could go, I had two children, and I had this wedding, you know we had the cathedral and we had the priest and it was just everything was there.' ‌ Myleene also previously revealed on Loose Women that the person Quinn had cheated on her with had then asked her for a photo, which she refused. She said: '100%, I've been on the receiving of someone who cheated on me. I was extremely disturbed as was my family as was the ripple effect of people who have to live with those actions. 'Put it this way, one of the people that he cheated on me with asked to have a photo with me and I refused. ‌ 'One of the people that he had an affair with or a relationship with just said 'Can I have a photo with you?' 'I said 'No. I do not agree with what you stand for'. If I then put myself, If I align myself or have allegiance to you as a person, that photo is out there forever. "I don't agree with women or men having their lives turned upside down with lies and deceit because you didn't think it was that big of a crime. ‌ "You're messing with peoples emotions and their lives. They have permanent repercussions." Myleene opened up about the impact of her 2013 divorce, which came just six months after she said 'I do', on an appearance on Kate Thornton and Tamzin Outhwaite's Yahoo podcast White Wine Time. ‌ She admitted she was boozing before 11am and couldn't go five hours without a drink because of the stress and worries about her financial situation. She said: 'I was doing breakfast TV and I went to get out the car and I thought, 'I can't'... I was right in the middle of the divorce... "And I opened the door, and I couldn't get out the car. I couldn't breathe. Finances were spiralling because I thought, 'I'm going to lose everything'." On her drinking, Myleene added: "I remember waking up and thinking it's ok to have a drink at 11am, because I hadn't had a drink in five hours." ‌ After the split from Quinn, she revealed her reported £11million fortune was at risk because she'd refused a pre-nuptial agreement. She told the Mirror at the time: 'I married a convicted drug dealer and didn't sign a prenup. What was I thinking? When I say that sentence aloud, I realise how stupid it was... 'I just wish I had listened to my dad, my friends and everyone in the papers. Everyone could hear the alarm bells except me. I should have just opened my eyes.'
