Louisiana sues Roblox alleging the popular gaming site fails to protect children
The lawsuit, filed in state court by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, alleges that Roblox has failed to implement effective safety measures to protect child users from adult predators.
'Due to Roblox's lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana,' Murrill said in a news release. 'Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety.'
The company has faced lawsuits and backlash for not doing enough to protect kids on its gaming services. Last month, a lawsuit was filed in Iowa after a 13-year-old girl was allegedly introduced to an adult predator on the platform, then kidnapped and trafficked across multiple states and raped.
In Louisiana, Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard said his office has had multiple cases involving Roblox. In one, police allege a man used voice-altering technology to pose as a girl on the platform. Ard said there have yet to be any arrests made related to the gaming site.
Ultimately, Murrill said she believes Roblox should be shut down.
An email seeking comment was sent to the company Thursday.
The free online gaming platform has more than 111 million monthly users. Its website describes Roblox as 'the ultimate virtual universe that lets you create, share experiences with friends, and be anything you can imagine.'
Roblox doesn't allow users to share videos or images in chats and tries to block any personal information, such as phone numbers. However, as with other gaming platforms and social media sites with similar policies, people find ways around such safeguards.
Roblox, which according to its website has 'a zero-tolerance policy for the exploitation of minors,' doesn't allow children under 13 to chat with other users outside of games unless they have explicit parental permission. Because the platform does not encrypt private chat conversations, the company can monitor and moderate them.
However, Murrill said there is no age minimum or substantial age verification process once a user signs up. As a result, young children, teens and adults posing as children can sign up, she said.
The company says on its website that age verification 'is a new feature that is currently in testing on Roblox.' Last month, it launched a feature that requires teenagers aged 13 to 17 to send a video selfie to verify their ages if they want to chat freely with people they know, called 'trusted connections.'
Amid mounting criticism in recent months, the company has implemented additional measures that it says will keep their young users safe.
In August, Roblox told AP that it was rolling out an artificial intelligence system to help detect early signs of possible child endangerment, such as sexually exploitive language. Roblox said the system led it to submit 1,200 reports of potential attempts at child exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the first half of 2025.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell was indicted on Friday resulting from a corruption investigation. Cantrell's lawyer confirmed to The Associated Press that an indictment was returned, and her name was read aloud by a federal magistrate judge as a defendant. She has been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements and false declaration before a grand jury, according to the indictment. The city of New Orleans told NBC News it will have no comment on the indictment until the mayor's legal team has time to review the indictments. "The Mayor's attorney, Eddie Castaing, recently received the information, and is thoroughly reviewing the document," the statement said. "Until his review is complete, the City will not comment further on this matter." The indictment is the culmination of a long-running federal investigation into Cantrell, the first female mayor in the City's 300-year history. Prosecutors allege that Cantrell was having a romantic relationship with New Orleans Police Officer Jeffrey Paul Vappie II, who is on the department's executive protection unit. That relationship allegedly occurred between 2021 and 2024. Cantrell was married during the period of the alleged affair to attorney Jason Cantrell. He died in August 2023. 'To hide their relations from detection and to maximize their time together, Cantrell and Vappie exploited their public positions to develop and implement a scheme to defraud the city of New Orleans and the New Orleans Police Department by engaging in personal activities while Vappie claimed to be on duty and was paid for,' the indictment says. They further claimed that the pair had exchanged some 15,000 messages, photos, and audio clips on WhatsApp over an eight month period. The investigators also allege that Cantrell and Vappie were using the app to intimidate their subordinates and hide evidence. Vappie and Cantrell traveled together on 14 trips in eight months, several of which were romantic vacations under the pretense of work trips, according to prosecutors. In total, the city spent $70,000 to sent Vappie along with the mayor on her trips — which in some cases included visits to wine tastings — the prosecutors claimed. Vappie was initially charged with wire fraud and making false statements. He has pleaded not guilty. Cantrell was added to the case after an investigation into Vappie's actions. If the pair are convicted, both could go to prison, though for how long varies based on the indictment. Some indictments carry a five year penalty, and others could put them away for up to 20. The term-limited Democratic mayor will leave office in January.

On Wednesday, Aug. 13, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department (SBCSD) arrested Craig Arthur Simmons, 61, in connection with the dog mauling, after having "conducted surveillance" on his home, the SBCSD's Barstow Station announced in an alert. The arrest took place nearly a month after a 17-year-old girl was mauled by more than 10 dogs in the community of Newberry Springs on July 17. At the time, the girl's parents said she was out jogging when the "large-breed dogs" attacked her, according to authorities. The teen has since been identified locally, and through a GoFundMe campaign, as Tracy. Ahead of Simmons' arrest, police said they saw the suspect riding his bike down a roadway near the home. They interviewed him and then took him into custody, and he was later booked into the High Desert Detention Center. Simmons is accused of violating Code 399(B), Owner of Animal Causing Serious Bodily Injury or Death, according to the SBCSD. The SBCSD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further information on Saturday, Aug. 16. It is not clear if Simmons has legal representation to comment on his behalf. The SBCSD announced last month that authorities learned of the mauling at around 9:52 a.m. local time on July 17. Police said the attack took place about two hours prior. The teen was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, and, after speaking with her parents, police learned the dogs bit her "several times" on her arms and legs. The attack left the girl with "large lacerations, abrasions and removed flesh," per authorities. A witness rescued the teen from the animals. The San Bernardino Animal Control later seized 16 canines from the area, before the launch of a criminal investigation. At the time of the attack, the teen was traveling to a workout facility near a local community center, ABC 7 Los Angeles reported. While the girl's mother told the outlet she "never thought anything would happen to her," she added that she "couldn't recognize" her daughter after the attack, since she was covered in dirt. "What was going through my mind was the worst,' her stepfather, Carlos Ramirex, told ABC 7. 'It was not one dog or two dogs, it was a lot. They bit every part of her body you could think of except for her ankles."
