Tourists and labourers seek respite as Greece and Balkans gripped by heatwave

Reuters22-07-2025
ATHENS, July 22 (Reuters) - Labourers were pausing outdoor work and tourists seeking out shade on Tuesday as Greece sweltered under its third heatwave of the summer and soaring temperatures gripped the wider Balkan region, fuelling wildfires in Albania.
Situated at Europe's southernmost tip, Greece, which attracts dozens of millions of tourists every year, has always had hot and dry summers. But in recent years climate change has led to longer and more severe heatwaves, as well as destructive floods and wildfires.
Couriers, food delivery riders and builders in the wider area of the Greek capital Athens and other regions were among those ordered to pause work from midday until 5 p.m., as the mercury was expected to climb as high as 43 degrees Celsius, the labour ministry said.
Workers with underlying health issues were advised to work remotely to avoid heat stress. Outside the parliament building in central Athens, a soldier used a towel to wipe the sweat from the face of a presidential guard.
Tourists in Athens, one of the most densely populated capitals in Europe sitting on a plain flanked by mountains, sought out air-conditioned restaurants and stores, and some said they were staying inside in the middle of the day.
Authorities announced that the Acropolis, which sits on a rocky hill offering barely any shade and is Greece's most visited ancient site, would be closed for five hours from midday on Tuesday and Wednesday, a common step when temperatures soar.
The heatwave will continue until Sunday, the Greek meteorological service said.
Scorching heat also gripped neighboring Bulgaria on Tuesday, with authorities urging businesses to give away water and cut physical labour during high-risk hours.
In Montenegro, major roads were congested as many rushed to the beaches to find relief from the heat. In Albania, firefighters assisted by four aircraft from Italy and Greece battled two wildfires at a national park in the north and near the southwestern village of Dukat.
Last month, large parts of Western Europe sweltered in another severe heatwave that left many dead and triggered forest fires and health alerts across the region.
Across the globe, 2024 was the warmest year on record, with temperatures exceeding 1.5 Celsius above the pre-industrial era for the first time.
Research published last week showed that the soil surface temperature around Athens rose in some places by as much as 10 degrees Celsius since July 2024 after fires destroyed vegetation.

Temperatures to climb above 30C by Monday amid yellow heat health alert

Temperatures will soar above 30C in parts of the UK by Monday with another exceptionally hot spell bringing a yellow health alert. A fine day on Sunday will be followed by 'strong August sunshine' for England and Wales in the new week, with even the chance of isolated thunderstorms developing, the Met Office said. The forecaster previously said temperatures could reach the mid-30s across central, southern and eastern areas of the country in the coming days, and another heatwave was possible in some areas. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a yellow heat health alert from 12pm on Monday until 6pm on Wednesday, covering London, Yorkshire and the Humber, the East Midlands, east of England, the South East and South West. There could be a significant impact across health and social care services, including the potential for a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions. Tom Morgan, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: '[There is] definitely a north-south split in the weather [on Monday]. 'Quite cloudy across Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England, the rain tending to come and go, but most persistent in western Scotland. 'Otherwise, England and Wales seeing mostly sunny skies, although there will be more in the way of high level cloud out there compared to on Sunday, so the sunshine [will be] hazy at times.' Most areas of the country will have temperatures in the mid to high-20s on Monday, while some spots around London and the South East could have highs of 31C. There will be lots of blue sky and sunshine for 'the vast majority' of the UK on Sunday, with temperatures feeling noticeably warmer nationwide but particularly across northern areas thanks to a lighter breeze, Mr Morgan said. Highs of 28C are possible in London while temperatures will be comfortably into the mid-20s elsewhere. The heatwave threshold is met when a location records at least three consecutive days with maximum temperatures exceeding a designated value, according to the Met Office. This is 25C for most of the UK, but rises to 28C in London and its surrounding area, where temperatures are typically higher. Emergency services are already having to respond to the rising heat and ongoing dry conditions. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said they had declared a major incident on Saturday as about 100 firefighters battled a fire in Holt Heath, near Wimborne, while crews have continued tackling a large blaze at Newton Heath, near Swanage, which has been burning since last Sunday.

Horror moment chairlift COLLAPSES at Russian resort leaving 13 dangling in the air & four plunging into lake below

THIS is the horrifying moment a chairlift collapses at a Russian resort with four passenger sent plunging into a lake below. The ride from hell saw six more people injured after falling to the ground as another 13 others were left dangling in the air. 5 5 5 5 A dozen tourists needed treatment from officials in Nalchik after the mountainous Kabardino-Balkaria region. One is reportedly in a serious condition. Concerning footage shows how the chairs suddenly jolt before dropping several feet as they pass along the line above the resort. Riders can be heard screaming as they crash down to the ground and land in trees, on the road and in the 22ft deep Lake Trek. Other passengers were left stranded in midair still strapped into their chairs. Thirteen people had to be "evacuated" by the emergency services in the end. A major rescue operation was also put in place to rescue those who had collapsed on the ground and take them to hospital. A child was among those hurt in the chairlift collapse. A regional health ministry spokesman confirmed one patient is in serious condition in an intensive care unit. The chairlift - to a local scenic viewing point - was originally built in 1968. A preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident says wear and tear of the cables is considered as the main reason. According to local media, there had been several complaints about the state of the cable car. Tourists had even described it as "rusty" and "old". A criminal case has been opened into the incident. 5

British father, 54, dies in crash while on holiday in Greece - leaving his children orphaned

A father has died while on holiday, leaving his children orphaned. Craig Bloomer, 54, who ran a café in Wolverhampton, died after he was caught in a scooter crash while in Greece. He lost control of the moped he was riding and crashed near the village of Agios Mattheos in Corfu in July. He was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead by doctors. Hi grieving daughter Rebecca, 32, also from Wolverhampton, said: 'Our dad's loss has left a massive hole in our lives.' She added: We lost our mum two years ago to cancer. Since then, he has been a bit down in the dumps. 'On holiday, it was the happiest I'd ever seen him, he had a new girlfriend. 'He was lovely and a proper family man.' He was known to love motorbikes, old cars, going to the pub, snooker, and was 'really good' at art. The sudden death came after he lost his wife Jane, 53, to cancer. The grandfather had been staying on the island with his two daughters, their partners and their children. His body was flown back to England on Wednesday and the family will start planning the funeral. The heartbroken sisters have launched a GoFundMe to help with the costs.
