EXCLUSIVE RICHARD EDEN: Kate and William's new hire will horrify Meghan. I've never told the full story of how I exposed her worrying behaviour

Daily Mail24-04-2025

When Meghan Markle became engaged to Prince Harry, she was warmly welcomed into the Royal Family – and by the British public generally.
Thousands lined the streets of Windsor on that sunny day in May 2018 when the couple exchanged vows at St George's Chapel.
The media, meanwhile, gushed about how the beautiful, mixed-race actress from America would breathe new life into the ancient institution that is the British monarchy.
So, I was surprised later that year when I started to hear whispers that all was not well behind the scenes.
Keen to avoid bursting the bubble of positivity that surrounded Meghan and Harry, who was at that time the most popular of all the royals, I didn't publish anything in my social diary, Eden Confidential, until rumours of discord became hard fact.
In November 2018, I received a tip that Meghan's personal assistant, Melissa Toubati, had suddenly quit just six months after the royal wedding, which she had helped organise.
'It's a real shock,' a source told me at the time. 'Why would she want to leave such a prestigious job so soon?'
Officials usually decline to discuss staffing matters, so I was taken aback when a senior source at the Palace chose to praise the assistant publicly.
'Melissa is a hugely talented person,' said the source.
'She played a pivotal role in the success of the royal wedding and will be missed by everyone in the Royal Household.'
For someone to go out of their way to pay such fulsome tribute suggested that Melissa's colleagues were not happy with her departure.
And the fact she left so suddenly raised questions about the reasons for her exit.
Indeed, it later emerged in a leaked email that Jason Knauf, who was communications secretary to both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Prince William and Catherine, had written to Simon Case, William's then private secretary, in 2018 to say: 'I am very concerned that the duchess was able to bully two PAs out of the household in the past year.
'The treatment of X was totally unacceptable.'
He added: 'The duchess seems intent on having someone in her sights. She is bullying Y and seeking to undermine her confidence. We have had report after report from people who have witnessed unacceptable behaviour towards Y.'
The names of 'X' and 'Y' were never made public.
Melissa's exit proved to be the first of many departures from Harry and Meghan's staff in the years that followed.
It's been hard to keep track, but the total number of employees the Sussexes have lost since they married in 2018 is thought to be about 20, with around ten having left since Harry and Meghan moved to California two years later after quitting royal duties.
Knauf stopped working for the Sussexes in 2019 but continued to be employed by William and Catherine for another three years before he moved abroad.
Last week, Knauf was named the next chief executive of the Earthshot Prize, William's flagship environmental project.
The appointment comes just a few weeks since Knauf spoke publicly for the first time about the leaked 2018 email in which he accused the duchess of 'bullying staff out of the royal household' and said he had 'no regrets' about his claims.
Asked by Australia's 60 Minutes television show if he would have done anything differently, Knauf said: 'No.'
William's decision to hand Knauf such an important role will no doubt horrify Harry and Meghan.
But that will not worry the heir to the throne, to whom the Sussexes are increasingly irrelevant ghosts from the past.
This Earthshot appointment is clear evidence, if it were needed, that William has no plans for a reunion with his brother and sister-in-law any time soon.

Jeremy Clarkson bans fan from The Farmer's Dog pub

It comes after fans took online to slam the Clarkson's Farm star for the price of a pie at his new pub, The Farmer's Dog. The pub has been at the centre of the latest series of Clarkson's Farm. As well as the departure of Kaleb Cooper and the arrival of new star Harriet Cowan, Jeremy's bid to open a new pub in the Cotswolds has been the key storyline of the latest batch of episodes. Since opening, The Farmer's Dog has attracted huge crowds. Renovated by Jeremy, along with help from his girlfriend Lisa Hogan. Series 4 of Clarkson's Farm. Who do we like most? Endgame? Or Richard Ham? During the show, Jeremy reformed his collective of local farmers, who he had agreed to help out by buying their produce for his pub along with his own beef, in a bid to make sure everything sold in the pub and Lisa's farm shop could be sourced locally and with British produce while still being an affordable price. But some Clarkson's Farm fans say they have a slightly different view on what is affordable, as they hit out at the £24 asking price for a pie and veg at the new pub. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, user @kalrlk said: "Thought @JeremyClarkson wanted an affordable pub for customers. £24 for pie and veg is a bit much." @devonboy3410 said: "Dead weight for British beef is far too expensive £6.89/kg for R4L down from the record high £6.98/kg earlier in the month. I can't wait till we get US beef cuts here because British beef industry is now taking the p*** at those prices." Recommended reading: Jeremy then replied to tell them: "You are now banned from the pub." Another said to Jeremy: "@grok what would be the price in the UK to buy and raise local cows and how does that translate to the beef pie price of 24 British pounds." Jeremy replied: "Watch the show. It's explained." @cudaplumcrazy said: "Your cows aren't they Jeremy?", to which Clarkson said: "Some are. Most come from other farmers in the area and we pay a premium. We are here to back British farming. If you don't want to do that, fine. Enjoy your chlorine." The first six episodes of Clarkson's Farm 4 are now available on the service, with another two to follow this Friday.

Queen ‘thrilled' to open horse racing stand named in her honour

Queen Camilla has officially opened a stand named in her honour, the Queen at the Hexham Racecourse in Northumberland. Along with opening the Queen Camilla stand, the Queen toured the privately-owned venue, which she called "the most beautiful racecourse". The course is located 600ft above the town and offers views across the county from its jump track, which sits in a natural amphitheatre. Camilla also expressed her hope to return to the racecourse with a runner one day. She made the comments under a photograph of the late Queen's horse, No Trumps, which won a race at the course in 2019. She wore a pale-blue Bruce Oldfield outfit and a horseshoe broach marked Minoru, which was a horse owned by Edward VII. The Queen used a clear umbrella at times as showers passed over. After officially opening the stand, she said: 'How thrilled I am to be here in Hexham. 'I haven't been here, I am ashamed to say, before but it really is the most beautiful racecourse. 'It has the most wonderful views. 'Unfortunately, I didn't bring the weather with me, I can imagine what it is like on a sunny day because it looks pretty good on a day like this. 'Next time, I hope to come back with a runner. Hopefully it emulates No Trumps.' The Queen spoke to racing industry figures including trainer Charlie Brooks, who said afterwards: 'She is very engaged in racing issues and, without putting words in her mouth, is understanding of the challenges – she knows her stuff.' Robert Whitelock, racecourse manager, showed the Queen around the site and said afterwards: 'It is wonderful that she came up here and I think she is delighted about the stand being named in her honour.' Racing has been held in Hexham since 1670 and National Hunt Racing started at the current site in 1890. The Queen, like her late mother-in-law before her, is a long-standing supporter of horse racing and has loved horses since she was a girl. She once told ITV Racing: 'I could probably ride before I could walk.' A follower of jump racing from her teenage years, Camilla recognised the odds were against being a winning racehorse owner. Speaking to the channel in 2021, she said: 'I think people go into racing who don't know a lot about it and think 'Oh, we will buy a horse and it will win a race', but it's terribly difficult to win any race anywhere. 'The odds are actually stacked against winning, aren't they?'
