Packers' proposal to ban 'Tush Push' fails to pass during league meetings
The Green Bay Packers' modified proposal attempting to ban the "Tush Push" play popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles did not receive enough votes from league owners and failed to pass on Wednesday in Minneapolis.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, 10 teams voted against the proposal. To pass the rule change, the proposal needed "yes" votes from 24 teams, or 75 percent. The final vote was 22 for "yes" and 10 for "no."
The Packers' proposal sought to prohibit "an offensive player from pushing a teammate who was lined up directly behind the snapper and receivers the snap, immediately at the snap," citing player safety and pace of play concerns. The rule change would have created a 10-yard penalty for attempting the play.
Instead, the "Tush Push" lives on.
The Eagles, who petitioned hard for the play to remain legal, were clearly happy with the result of the vote:
According to ESPN, the Eagles have run the play 108 times since 2022, far and away the most in the NFL. And no team has been more successful running the play, which involves having several players lined up behind quarterback Jalen Hurts and "pushing" the quarterback on a sneak attempt.
Shortly after, the Eagles posted a highlight reel on YouTube of over 26 minutes of "Tush Push" plays.
Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy has long been in favor of banning the play. He is retiring from his position this summer, so this rule proposal was his final chance to get the play out of the game.
The Eagles win again.

Eagles DC Delivers Confident Message After Critical Losses
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. For the Philadelphia Eagles, winning the trenches has been a primary reason behind their success in the past. That was especially true during the team's most recent run, which was capped off with a Super Bowl victory. The Eagles' offensive line won't have a ton of turnover heading into the 2025 NFL season. The same can't be said for the defensive side. Oftentimes, winning comes at a great cost. The Eagles witnessed their pass rush feast on Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl just months ago, but they also witnessed teams line up to pay some of the free agents, causing some Philadelphia stars to walk out the door. A little worry would only make the Eagles human. The team's defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, recently fielded questions about the state of his defensive line. The Eagles prepared for the cost of success, and Fangio remains confident in his team's ability to stay strong after some key losses in free agency. "I feel good about Nolan [Smith]. "I think we'll feel good about Jalyx [Hunt] now that he's gonna get a lot of reps and develop," Fangio told reporters, according to Pro Football Talk. "He played good for us down the stretch last year, and played a lot, as you saw, so I feel good about those two guys, and I think they'll continue to improve." "We've got [Josh] Uche, we've got Azeez [Ojulari], we've got three other guys there. I think we'll be fine." Josh Sweat, a homegrown defensive lineman for the Eagles, took his talents to the Arizona Cardinals. He leaves the Eagles with 104 regular-season games under his belt. He collected 43 sacks over that time, including nearly three in this past postseason. The 2021 third-rounder, Milton Williams, is another player who cashed out this offseason. Since his rookie season, Williams has played in 67 games, with 19 starts. He collected 132 tackles (25 for a loss), 11.5 sacks, and nearly 30 hits on opposing QBs. Williams leaves the Eagles for a run with the New England Patriots. Beyond the younger players who picked up a big payday, the Eagles also lost their seasoned veteran, Brandon Graham, to retirement. Eventually, Graham's age caught up to him throughout the 2024 NFL season, but without injuries he was still quite productive. The Eagles will face a ton of tests in 2025, and how they perform up front on defense will be the biggest question heading into the new year. It's easy to assume that all will be right for Fangio's unit, but the Eagles don't see a reason to be overly concerned at this time.

Vic Fangio: Good news is Jalen Carter played well and can still improve a lot
Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter has made a big impact in his first two NFL seasons, but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio thinks there's plenty of upside left for the 2023 first-round pick. Carter was a second-team All-Pro after recording 42 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles during the regular season and he had two more sacks and a forced fumble in the team's playoff win over the Rams. During a press conference this week, Fangio was asked his thoughts about what the future holds for Carter. 'The good news about Jalen is twofold,' Fangio said, via a transcript from the team. 'One, he played very well for us last year, and two, he can still improve a lot.' Carter isn't arguing with that assessment. Carter mentioned Chris Jones and Dexter Lawrence while discussing the best defensive tackles in the league and said his goal is to reach that level as well. 'This is what I wanted to do,' Carter said, via Dave Zangaro of 'I wanted to be the best at what I do, try to be the best. I'm not there yet. I still got a lot of people in front of me that's obviously been in the league a couple [more] years, got years of experience on me. But I'm just going to keep grinding every day. Not just me by myself working on specific things to get better, just being around the team having the guys support me also makes me also be one of the best in the league.' Repeating as Super Bowl champions is difficult, but it'll be a little easier if Carter can continue ascending as rapidly as he has the last two years.
