New kid on the block: Jose Baxter (centre) will officially join Peter Cklamovski's coaching staff when the national centralised training camp starts on Sunday.
KELANA JAYA: Jose Baxter, once a prodigy at Premier League side Everton, is now set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Malaysian football.
The 32-year-old, who etched his name in English football history as Everton's youngest-ever senior debutant at 16 years and 191 days in 2008, has been appointed as assistant coach.
In addition to replacing Australian Mark Milligan, Baxter will also assist Nafuzi Zain with the national Under-23 squad, forming a crucial link between both teams.
Baxter, who last played professionally in 2020, will officially join Peter Cklamovski's coaching staff when the national centralised training camp starts on Sunday.
'He has been part of our long-term recruitment plans,' said Cklamovski during the national team announcement at the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) headquarters yesterday.
'Initially, the plan was for him to support the Under-23 team but when Mark Milligan left, we saw the perfect opportunity to elevate him to the senior set-up while keeping him connected with the youth team.
'His experience and skill set will benefit both sides and that continuity is vital for the future of Malaysian football.'
In line with that vision, several young players have been included in the 38-man senior squad in preparation for the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier clash against Vietnam, on June 10 at the National Stadium.
Those selected are Johor Darul Ta'zim II's Alif Ahmad and Shafizan Arshad, as well as Selangor II's Haykal Danish Mohd Haizon and Aiman Hakimi Othman.
Also included are Thailand-based duo Fergus Tierney and Mohamad Abu Khalil, who play for Nakhon Pathom United in the Thai League.
'This is a fantastic opportunity for these young talents to experience the senior team environment,' said Cklamovski.
'We are not just preparing them for the AFC Under-23 Asian Cup qualifiers and the AFF U-23 Championship but we're laying the groundwork for long-term national success.
Cklamovski also hinted at the possibility of more overseas-based Malaysians joining the national fold, pending paperwork.
The Harimau Malaya are set to play two international friendlies against world No. 72 Cape Verde at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras on May 29 followed by a closed-door match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 3 before the match against Vietnam.

Man City sign Ait-Nouri from Wolves on five-year deal

MANCHESTER, England: Algeria defender Rayan Ait-Nouri has joined Manchester City from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a five-year deal ahead of this month's Club World Cup, City announced on Monday. Financial details were not disclosed but British media reported City paid a fee of around 33.7 million pounds (US$45.69 million) to sign the 24-year-old, who had one year left on his Wolves contract. Ait-Nouri initially joined Wolves on loan from Ligue 1 side Angers in 2020, before making the move permanent the following year. He leaves Wolves after five seasons, having made 157 appearances with 12 goals and 19 assists. Wolves are now without two of their key players from last season, after Brazil forward Matheus Cunha's transfer to Manchester United on June 1. City finished third in the 2024-25 Premier League season and only secured a Champions League berth on the final day of the campaign. Pep Guardiola's side are next in action at the Club World Cup in the United States. They face Wydad AC in their opening game on June 18, before taking on Al-Ain and Juventus in their other Group G fixtures.

Spurs close in on Brentford's Frank in search for new manager

Thomas Frank has been in charge of Brentford since 2018. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : Brentford manager Thomas Frank is the man Tottenham have targeted to replace Ange Postecoglou, according to multiple reports today. Postecoglou was dismissed after two seasons in charge on Friday despite ending Spurs' 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League last month. Frank, who has been in charge of the Bees since 2018, led Brentford back to the top flight in 2021 after an absence of 74 years and has established the west London club in the Premier League. Hiring the Dane, whose contract runs until 2027, would cost Spurs around £10 million in compensation. The BBC reported that a formal approach from Tottenham is expected in the coming days. Spurs will play in the Champions League next season thanks to their Europa League success in Bilbao, where they Manchester United 1-0. However, Postecoglou paid the price for a miserable Premier League season as Tottenham finished 17th after losing 22 of their 38 games. Frank began his coaching career in the youth set-up of the Danish national team before a three-year stint at Brondby. He initially joined Brentford as an assistant coach before stepping to replace Dean Smith, when he left to join Aston Villa. After losing out in the 2020 Championship play-off final, Brentford bounced back to win promotion through the play-offs a year later. Since then, Frank has established the Bees as a competitive Premier League force recording 13th, ninth, 16th and 10th-place finishes despite consistently selling some of his best players. Bryan Mbeumo is set to become the latest big-money departure from Brentford, with Manchester United interested in the Cameroon international, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season. However, Frank would reportedly be keen to take Mbeumo with him to north London should his move to Tottenham be finalised.
