Trust in South African police hits record low, survey reveals
Police trust in South Africa has reached its lowest level in 27 years, according to a Social Attitudes Survey released by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC).
The findings come amid a growing political crisis following damning allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
The survey shows that only 22% of South Africans expressed confidence in the police in 2022, with similarly low levels recorded in 2023 and 2024/25.
This marks the worst confidence ratings since data collection began in 1998.
'A majority of the adult public never expressed trust in the police,' said Dr Benjamin Roberts, HSRC research director and principal investigator of the study.
'The findings are expected to inform interventions aimed at restoring public faith in the police. By adopting a more community-focused and accountable approach to policing, we can work towards creating safer and more secure communities for all South Africans.'
Between 1998 and 2010, trust levels hovered between 39% and 42%. Confidence fell sharply after the 2012 Marikana massacre and dipped even lower following the July 2021 unrest, when only 27% of respondents expressed trust in the police, he said.

Apart from Ramaphosa resigning, the MK party is demanding that all the people implicated by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, including Mchunu, and deputy national police commissioner, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya to be prosecuted. The Jacob Zuma-led party has threatened to bring a motion of no confidence in Parliament against Ramaphosa. In the letter seen by IOL, among other things, the MK party tells Ramaphosa that the decision to appoint Professor Cachalia as Acting Minister of Police is in contravention of the Constitution, because the academic is not a member of Cabinet or the National Assembly. Defiant Mchunu declares innocence, says he's ready to face inquiry
Police minister Senzo Mchunu says he is innocent of the allegations KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made against him and is ready to give his side of the story. Mchunu was speaking on Friday for the first time publicly on the allegations after President Cyril Ramaphosa placed him on leave of absence. Ramaphosa said this was in response to Mkhwanazi's allegations that Mchunu interfered with sensitive police investigations and colluded with business people, including a murder accused, to disband the political killings task team based in KZN. According to Mchunu, everything has its own time. 'I am ready to explain my side and bring clarity,' said Mchunu. 'I am innocent of those allegations and I deny them, but let's wait for the commission. I've got lawyers, I've engaged lawyers on this matter.' Mchunu, who was speaking to the SABC during the Nelson Mandela Day celebrations in KZN, said the allegations were not only directed at him but also implicated government departments and elements of the justice system.

Gqeberha cop allegedly kills two women, then himself
A 32-year-old police officer allegedly shot and killed two women before taking his own life this morning, 18 July 2025. The shooting incident allegedly occurred in a flat at Gordon Terrace, Central, in Gqeberha at around 09:30. According to a SAPS media statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, officers were called to Gordon Terrace. Upon arrival, police officers found the bodies of two women with gunshot wounds, along with the body of a man who had also sustained a gunshot wound. Police have confirmed that the deceased male was a 32-year-old off-duty constable stationed at Algoa Park SAPS. It is alleged that the constable shot the two women before turning the gun on himself. The motive is still under investigation. The identities of the deceased will be released once their next of kin have been notified. Another murder sent shockwaves through Gqeberha after the body of a 12-year-old girl was found dead in a bushy area in Bethelsdorp, Gqeberha. According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, officers responded to the scene around 12:45 on Wednesday, 16 July, and found the child with visible injuries. The cause of death is not yet known and will be confirmed following a postmortem. No suspects have been identified, and the motive is currently unknown.
