Defence granted adjournment in Molly Ticehurst murder case, 16 months after NSW woman's death
Daniel Billings, 30, is charged with murdering Ticehurst at her home in Forbes, central western NSW, in the early hours of April 22, 2024.
Billings is yet to enter a plea.
During a brief mention in Parkes local court on Friday morning, Billings' Legal Aid solicitor Diane Elston asked for the case to be adjourned, saying negotiations between the lawyers were continuing.
There would still be 'some work to do' after the prosecution and defence teams meet later in August, she said.
Magistrate Brett Thomas agreed to a seven-week adjournment, finding it was in the interests of 'members of the community, the family of the victim, the defendant and the Crown'.
But he acknowledged the delay for Ticehurst's family, who have attended each of Billings' court dates.
Prosecutors should 'be in contact with them today and just explain the situation to them,' Thomas said.
Deputy senior crown prosecutor Lee Carr SC, appearing from Sydney, agreed.
'That can be accommodated easily,' he said.
Billings, Ticehurst's former boyfriend, had been freed on bail by a local court registrar a fortnight before the alleged murder on charges including three counts of sexual intercourse without consent against her.
Billings was also charged with four counts of stalking and intimidating her, destroying her property and aggravated animal cruelty against her 12-week-old dachshund puppy in 2023.
Four more serious charges, including one count of aggravated sexual assault, were laid in December 2024.
Legal documents before the court accused Billings of threatening to cause Ticehurst further physical harm during the alleged aggravated sexual assault.
He is facing a total of 17 charges, including breaching an AVO that was in place to protect Ticehurst.
Following Ticehurst's death changes were made to NSW laws including stripping registrars of the power to grant bail and 'show cause' thresholds for domestic violence-related bail applications.
A specific bail division of the local court was also created in July, ensuring bail applications can be dealt with more quickly in virtual courtrooms.
Billings' case returns to court on October 3.

Dale Stogden, also known as Brett, was shot near a petrol station on Doncaster Road, Wakefield, at 9.43pm on Tuesday, August 12. Police believe that the vehicle used was on false plates and had been stolen in a burglary in Castleford on August 3. Following the shooting, Mr Stogden, a 50-year-old from Wakefield, was rushed to hospital where he sadly later died from his injuries. West Yorkshire Police have arrested three men on suspicion of murder, aged 19, 20, 27, from addresses in the Ossett and Lupset areas of the city. They currently remain in police custody. Now, his heartbroken daughters have paid tribute to their beloved father, pleading with the gunman responsible for his 'cruel' death to come forward. Adding that they have been left in 'complete shock' by the unexpected loss of their father 'in such horrific, violent circumstances', their statement continued: 'We will miss him, and our breakfast get togethers. Man, 45, charged with murdering 73-year-old after woman found dead with a serious head injury
A MAN, 45, has been charged with murder after a woman, 73, was found dead. Police were called to a property on Russia Lane, in Bethnal Green, London, at 9pm on Thursday. Sufia Khatun was found with a serious head injury and paramedics sadly pronounced her dead at the scene. The Met Police detained 45-year-old Mizanur Rahman, who was known to the victim. He will appear at Thames Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with murder. Ms Khatun's next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. Det Ch Supt Brittany Clarke, who leads the Central East Command Unit, said: "Our team of officers and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to this woman's tragic death. "This is believed to be an isolated incident, with no wider risk to the general public. "However, residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days." A Met Police spokesperson said: "A man has been charged with murder after the death of a woman in Bethnal Green. "Mizanur Rahman, 45 (14.6.1980), will appear at Thames Magistrates Court on Saturday, 16 August after being charged on Friday, 15 August.
