Defence granted adjournment in Molly Ticehurst murder case, 16 months after NSW woman's death
Daniel Billings, 30, is charged with murdering Ticehurst at her home in Forbes, central western NSW, in the early hours of April 22, 2024.
Billings is yet to enter a plea.
During a brief mention in Parkes local court on Friday morning, Billings' Legal Aid solicitor Diane Elston asked for the case to be adjourned, saying negotiations between the lawyers were continuing.
There would still be 'some work to do' after the prosecution and defence teams meet later in August, she said.
Magistrate Brett Thomas agreed to a seven-week adjournment, finding it was in the interests of 'members of the community, the family of the victim, the defendant and the Crown'.
But he acknowledged the delay for Ticehurst's family, who have attended each of Billings' court dates.
Prosecutors should 'be in contact with them today and just explain the situation to them,' Thomas said.
Deputy senior crown prosecutor Lee Carr SC, appearing from Sydney, agreed.
'That can be accommodated easily,' he said.
Billings, Ticehurst's former boyfriend, had been freed on bail by a local court registrar a fortnight before the alleged murder on charges including three counts of sexual intercourse without consent against her.
Billings was also charged with four counts of stalking and intimidating her, destroying her property and aggravated animal cruelty against her 12-week-old dachshund puppy in 2023.
Four more serious charges, including one count of aggravated sexual assault, were laid in December 2024.
Legal documents before the court accused Billings of threatening to cause Ticehurst further physical harm during the alleged aggravated sexual assault.
He is facing a total of 17 charges, including breaching an AVO that was in place to protect Ticehurst.
Following Ticehurst's death changes were made to NSW laws including stripping registrars of the power to grant bail and 'show cause' thresholds for domestic violence-related bail applications.
A specific bail division of the local court was also created in July, ensuring bail applications can be dealt with more quickly in virtual courtrooms.
Billings' case returns to court on October 3.

Mother and three children VANISH shortly after she called her mom to complain about abusive husband
A Peruvian woman and her three children are missing in California after she threatened to approach the police because her husband had allegedly beaten her. Sheyla Gutiérrez Rocillo was last weekend during a video chat with her mother, Helga Rocillo Morán, back home and told her that she was ready to report her husband, Josimar Cabrera Cornejo, to the local authorities. Morán told local media outlet, Latina Noticias, that the couple and their children migrated to the United States in 2023 in search of a fresh start, and that Cabrera Cornejo already had a history of assaulting her. 'She told me that Josimar Cabrera Cornejo hit her, mistreated her, and had even hit my youngest grandchild, the youngest of whom is 3 years old. He had slapped her,' the concerned mother said during an interview Thursday. Morán said she last spoke to her daughter and son-in-law and told him that it was time for him to change his attitude. 'I told the father, 'Josimar, if you say you love my daughter and your children, change your mind for their sake,' she recalled. 'She told me that he abused them, hit them. I found out that he had slapped the baby when he was younger. She told me, 'Mom, I can't take it anymore. I'm going to file a complaint today, Saturday.' Morán said that Cabrera Cornejo visibly angered in background during the entire conversation. 'He didn't say anything, but looked at her with a fierce expression,' she said. 'Later, I heard him say, 'Don't file a complaint, you'll hurt me. Morán said that her daughter then told him, 'You're not changing, Josimar. You keep harassing me, abusing me, psychologically, I can't take it anymore.' Morán said she made a second video call in which the couple appeared together before her daughter told her that she was going to take her children to a local park. 'She told me, 'Okay, Mommy, I'm going to take the babies for a walk in the park, we're going to eat, and I'm going to leave them.' It was the last time Morán would ever hear from her daughter. Each of the calls have gone unanswered. 'He had slapped her. I called my daughter, but she didn't answer,' Morán said. Morán said that she communicated with Cabrera Cornejo on Sunday via text message and that he informed her that she had been detained at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office during a scheduled appointment. However, Morán accused Cabrera Cornejo of lying because the offices are never opened on Sundays and his appointment was scheduled for September. 'There's no report with ICE. If she were deported, she would have called me by now,' Morán said. A neighbor told the family that she heard loud screams from the home, but decided not to get involved. A male friend of Gutiérrez Rocillo told La República newspaper that he reached out to California authorities, who located blood stains in front of the condominium. Security camera footage showed the couple entering the home before Cabrera Cornejo appeared alone dragging a large bag across the building. 'They had a somewhat toxic relationship, as he was jealous and assaulted her on occasion,' he said. 'On Saturday, they argued. Her friends in the United States tried to contact him, but received no response … Cabrera is on the run with the three children, and Sheyla's whereabouts are unknown.' A neighbor told Gutiérrez Rocillo's friend that Cabrera Cornejo was arrested and that the children were placed in custody of the police, but has been unable to confirm.

Pictured: Father who was gunned down behind pizza takeaway in 'drive-by shooting' - as police continue manhunt for killer in 'stolen car'
A father who was gunned down behind a pizza takeaway in a 'drive-by shooting' has been pictured as police continue their manhunt for his killer in a 'stolen car'. Dale Stogden, also known as Brett, was shot near a petrol station on Doncaster Road, Wakefield, at 9.43pm on Tuesday, August 12. Police believe that the vehicle used was on false plates and had been stolen in a burglary in Castleford on August 3. Following the shooting, Mr Stogden, a 50-year-old from Wakefield, was rushed to hospital where he sadly later died from his injuries. West Yorkshire Police have arrested three men on suspicion of murder, aged 19, 20, 27, from addresses in the Ossett and Lupset areas of the city. They currently remain in police custody. Now, his heartbroken daughters have paid tribute to their beloved father, pleading with the gunman responsible for his 'cruel' death to come forward. Adding that they have been left in 'complete shock' by the unexpected loss of their father 'in such horrific, violent circumstances', their statement continued: 'We will miss him, and our breakfast get togethers. 'We will miss his big smile. Dad, we hope you are no longer in pain and that you can rest in peace. We will always love and miss you.' His daughters also implored the person responsible for their father's murder to contact the police, adding: 'We would like to ask the person who took our dad's life so cruelly, please hand yourself in then we can have some closure and lay him to rest.' The force said that they are continuing to follow 'multiple' lines of enquiry, following a 'strong response' to the public appeals for information. On Wednesday evening, a Toyota RAV4 car which police believe was used in the offence was recovered after being found abandoned at an address on Dunbar Street, Wakefield and is now being recovered for police analysis. It was described as being distinctive due to having bull lights on the roof above the windshield. The driver was driving in the direction of Wakefield before turning around near the BP petrol station immediately before the shooting and then driving off in the same direction they came from. Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team who is leading the investigation said: 'We are determined to get answers for Brett's family and ensure that those involved in this senseless crime are brought to justice. 'I would like to extend my thanks again to those who have already provided information to assist this investigation. 'I would like to reassure you that there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes and all available lines of enquiry are being followed up.' Any motorists who were in the Doncaster Road area, described as 'busy on most evenings', between 9.30pm and 9.45pm on August 3 have been urged to check their dashcam footage. Pictured: police seen investigating in a bush and nearby bin following the shooting on August 12 DCI Entwistle previously said that he understood 'the shock and concern' that the incident will have caused for the general publics, 'particularly given that a firearm has been involved'. He added that the force were 'dedicating significant resources to this investigation and our neighbourhood policing colleagues are supporting this with an increased presence in the area to provide reassurance to the community.' Any motorists who were in the Doncaster Road area, described as 'busy on most evenings', between 9.30pm and 9.45pm on August 3 have been urged to check their dashcam footage. Those with relevant information or who witnessed any part of the incident have been asked to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team via Live Chat online or by calling 101 and quoting Operation Ploughland.
